"In Le Lava, located in Saint-Malo, Brittany, you'll find a captivating collection of dolls and sculptures that reflect the region's rich artistic heritage, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and whimsical designs that enchant visitors of all ages."
Grand Café is located in South Western House, a Grade II listed building designed by John Norton that originally opened it's doors in 1872 as South Western Hotel.
The Restaurant itself was originally the Wedgewood Ballroom, with its traditional blue and white colour scheme seen in the plasterwork. There are only a few of these rooms still to be seen in the UK, and most of them are in London. Grand Cafe is very fortunate to be connected to this part of history.

After the Second World War, some U-Boat pens were filled up with different materials, like sand. The current exhibition, installed in the "Life" (pen number 14), creates an interesting link with the recent history of the U-Bunker.

The Grand Cafe is situated at the rear of South Western House, a building with a long and fascinating history. The Restaurant itself was originally the Wedgwood Ballroom, with its traditional blue and white colour scheme seen in the plasterwork. There are only a few of these rooms still to be seen in the UK, and most of them are in London.
There is also photographic evidence that the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited the Hotel and indeed danced in the Wedgwood Ballroom.

Men liet de verkochte partijen kaas wegen.

This area is actually one of the oldest parts of medieval Groningen.
From 1040 to 1215 here stood a much smaller building where the Vilicus (representative) of the Bishropic of Utrecht resided. The most rudimentary layout of the present-day building (1436) was constructed by the Brethren of the Common Life. In 1569 the manor became the residence of Johannes Knijff, the first bishop of the new diocese of Groningen and Drenthe.
Additional wings were constructed with bricks from the important former monastery Bloemhof at Wittewierum, demolished a few years earlier. In 1576 the building became the official residence of the Catholic Stadholder George van Lalaing, a.k.a. the Count of Rennenberg. He played a pivotal role in the War of Independence against the Spanish Crown (1568-1648), by siding in 1580 with King Philip II of Spain against the rebelling Dutch Provinces, led by William of Orange (1533-1584)
After lots of turmoil and intermittent fighting, in 1594 Groningen was reclaimed by William's successor, Maurice of Nassau, also Prince of Orange in the so-called 'Reduction of Groningen'. For the next two centures, The Prinsenhof became one of the abodes of the Stadtholders of the the Orange-lineage, even though they would usually reside in either Leeuwarden or The Hague.
During the French Occupation (1795-1813) the building acted first as a National Court and later as a French Military Hospital. After that it was in use as a military barracks, until in 1924 it was abandoned altogether. After extensive renovations it became the home of the Regional Television-network RTV-Noord from 1945 until 2005. In August 2012 it got it's present-day function, reopening as a luxurious Grand Hotel.

The Oude Haven area, near the Blaak train, metro and tram station, preserves the oldest part of the harbour, some of which dates from the 14th century. It's a decent place for a stroll, especially if you take time to look at the large collection of historic boats.

We didn't take so many photos, but chatted each others ears off instead. And it was great fun doing so. :o)

About
I was having a real rush of insomnia this night, rolling around in my bed for hours, so I decided to get out of bed and do something useful, I guess the building stress has got to me again.
The image was sitting in my folder for months and I never quite liked it until I decided to make it into a symmetrical flip, doesn't this look nice?
