The "Korenstapelhuis" (Graslei) is the oldest building in Ghent (12th century) and also has the oldest step-roofed façade in the world.

It is a textbook example of the Romanesque architectural style. For centuries it was the grain store of the city.

A revisit to a fascinating little town with so much to see! I’ve photographed this old grain store in the past, but I love the mural and the look of the building, so here it is from a different angle. Phillip and Charles Lampkin owned and operated the business for 20 years in Appleton City, Missouri.

Ham mill and Girnal, I had to look up Girnal. Apparently it’s an old Scottish name for a grain store. Plenty of history regarding this old water powered grain mill on the internet, Here could be a good place to start if you are interested. portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB1891

Historic Grain Shed, Murtoa Victoria. Constructed in 1941 270mx60m with ridge height 19m. 56 rows of 10 'sticks' constructed over 4 months.

This monumental structure is the largest surviving in Victoria based on vernacular principles and materials, as well as being the largest timber frame structure and the only one of its type still standing in Victoria. The Murtoa Stick Shed is fundamental to Victoria and Australia's cultural identity. the method used to construct his very large storage shed demonstrates considerable initiative on the part of its unknown designer.

The shed is now 101 on the Australian Heritage List.

"It is the interior that evokes the strongest response from all who visit it. It resembles a giant, serene cathedral of tall unmilled timber poles. From certain angles within, the wooden support poles resemble a forest of trees. This sense of awe and wonder makes this interior space one of the most impressive in Australia."

Five stories in all of in a huge warehouse of stored grain for the making of Jamesons whiskey. The shutters on the windows had to be carefully opened to keep the grain from spontaneously catching on fire, but closed against the rain. Tricky business, distilling.

Silo Art Trail. Artist: Rone. The images of a local couple Geoff and Merrilyn Horman. Their family has lived in the area for four generations. Geoff and Merrilyn were both born in the district and then married later in Lascelles in 1967. Together with their two sons and now their families also, they have continued the family tradition of wheat farming and strong community involvement.

60020 is approaching Wetmore to the north of Burton-on-Trent, it is at the head of the 07.05 Wolverhampton Steel Terminal to Scunthorpe.

In the background is the MGR wagon repair shop and further to the right one of the fine solid grain warehouses, the white wooden structure on the front being the sack hoist, a reminder of Burton's brewing history.

60020 entered service 31/01/1991, it went new to Thornaby and beacame part of Railfreight Metals sector. I carried the name Great Whernside until it became part of EW&S (as here). It is now in Deutsche Bahn cherry red with DBS branding.

Cromwell and Clunes.

The central region of Otago New Zealand is an area of high mountains, river valleys and remoteness. The distance from the coast and the capital of Otago Dunedin was a long slow and difficult journey. Despite this gold was discovered in 1862 which set off a gold rush to Central Otago and emerging settlements like Cromwell, Clyde, Bannockburn, Bendigo etc. Cromwell rush began in 1862 and gold mining continued until the 1930s but the main period of gold mining stopped in the 1890s when mining by large companies ceased. The township was surveyed in 1863 at the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau rivers where are large plain offered fertile flat land for the town. The capital of Otago Dunedin was still a long way away until the railway was gradually pushed up river valleys through the mountains to reach Cromwell in 1921. The railway closed in 1976. About that time the district turned to fruit tree growing as the cold dry winters and hot dry summers of Cromwell were ideal for stone fruits especially apples, pears and peaches. The historic heart and business district of Cromwell remained a memorial to its busy past until the 1990s. Some years before a decision was made to dam the Clutha River and create Lake Dunstan which would submerge most of the old town centre. Sixty homes and 50 commercial businesses were affected. Most were moved higher up from the river but many were replaced with a new town centre. The 27 kilometre long lake started to fill from 1992. Local actions resulted in a number of the historic buildings being moved to a new street with a couple being partially covered by the new riverbank such as the old Athenaeum and the former stone school. Today Cromwell has a population of around 6,000 people.

Built in 1941 to store wheat during World War 2 at a time when grain exports were restricted, the pitch of the roof mirrors the natural angle of repose of a pile of grain. It is the only remaining emergency grain store in Australia.

Known locally as the 'Wimmera Cathedral', this huge building is constructed from 560 tall timber poles, hence its other nickname of the 'Stick Shed'. It was recently added to the National Heritage List which "comprises exceptional natural and cultural places that contribute to Australia's national identity. National heritage defines the critical moments in our development as a nation and reflects achievements, joys and sorrows in the lives of Australians."

"The quiet and unassuming exterior of this rare and remarkable building . . . belies its majestic interior and the story it tells of the impact of World War Two on the Australian home front . . "
