The grain has always fascinated me, may be its history, so bound to the one of the human being, or may be its shape, so much symmetrical and regular. Everytime I pass close to a field of grain I surprise myself quite hypnotized; today was a day with heavy clouds close to my home, and when I noticed this field so green under a sky so leaden, with that strange path in the middle, I could not resist.

Aux échelles moyennes de l' observation et de la prévision , nombreux sont les cas d'évolution subite du temps au cours desquels le vitesse du vent s'accroît de façon brusque et marquée tandis que sa direction éprouve un net changement (jusqu'à 45 à 90°) : lorsqu'une telle évolution s'étale sur une durée de quelques minutes seulement avant de s'amortir assez rapidement, elle est qualifiée de grain ; ce phénomène, particulièrement redouté en mer, est fréquemment accompagné d' averses ou d' orages . On peut parler plus précisément de grain lorsque se manifestent de fortes rafales , excédant d'au moins 15 noeuds (soit 28 km/h ou 8 m.s ) la vitesse moyenne du vent pendant une période d'au moins 1 min.

Une ligne de grains ne s'accompagne pas obligatoirement de grains. De même, un grain orageux n'appartient pas forcément à une ligne de grains ; si tel est le cas, c'est un grain en ligne . Un grain noir est accompagné de nuages sombres et, souvent, de fortes pluies ; un grain blanc , au contraire, n'apporte pas de précipitations ni même parfois de nuages (sa dénomination vient de ce qu'il peut être signalé à l'horizon par un nuage blanc en ascension rapide).

On désigne quelquefois par ce terme de "grain" des phénomènes plus généraux, mais caractérisés également par leur soudaineté, leur intensité et leur brièveté : en mer, une tempête locale ; à terre, une averse venteuse.

Between 34 to 48 inches in length with a wingspan of nearly 7 feet. They are very tall with a long neck and long legs. Largely gray with a red forehead. Juveniles browner with no red on head. Plumage often appears a rusty color because of iron stains from water of ponds or marshes.

They inhabit large freshwater marshes, prairie ponds and marshy tundra. They are also on prairies and grain fields during migration and in winter.

They range from Siberia and Alaska east across arctic Canada to the Hudson Bay and south to western Ontario. There are isolated populations in the Rocky Mountians, northern prairies, and the Great Lakes region along with in Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. They winter in California's Central Valley and across the southern states from Arizona to Florida. They can also be found in Cuba.
