Friends in a field, their shadows running long into the untilled ground, and I’m busy trying to catch up, calling for them to hold on a moment, the voice unfamiliar and the words not my own, and when

I wake I realize the last thing I called to them might have been the name of the town we were all looking for, but now it’s a summer morning, the light coming in urgent with day, sheets strewn at the end of the bed, and by the time my mind reaches out for it, that name or word or thought, it’s gone, perhaps lying there up ahead, with them in the town beyond the old shed at the edge of the field, with its collection of discarded tools, hoes and picks and shovels still caked in loam and soil, the old two-furrow plough and an empty feedbag. There’s a persimmon tree, with its thin covering of leaves and its branches weighed by tightly packed, hard orange orbs, dense and

ripening, and a thicket of rosemary sprawling about in the autumn sun, gone wild, looking like it might take over the world with its thick rough tines, the heavy scent that rubs off onto skin and lasts all day even after you wake. But thinking of that town my friends have gone on to, looking out the window at the summer light, the raging open blue of the sky outside, I cross past the old shed to where the harrowed ground forms the first hint of a path between the cherry trees lining the field, to where a pair of jackdaws come in from the north, creamy white throats quiet as the flat slate sky above, flit

between some memory of spring, the one gone or the one up ahead.

My daughter jumps from her seat to congratulate her boyfriend of almost 4 years on his way back to his seat after receiving his degree. She will begin an accelerated Masters Degree in Education program at the University of Pittsburgh in June. In August he will start a 4 year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at Virginia Tech.

Black moth super rainbow @ Falling through a field

I have been debating about this one for months. I took this shot at my daughter's graduation. I wondered what could possibly elicit such an expression when her grand daughter would have been graduating as well. What ever it was, it made me wonder, why so glum?

They had to wait 2 hours until a fountain get fixed back up ,

The other afternoon I suddenly heard the distinct strains of Pomp and Circumstance coming through my shore house apt. window.

I wandered out on the front porch and glanced across the street to the church, and there was a drive up graduation happening on the front steps.

I grabbed my camera, threw Pearl's harness and leash on and we wandered around the corner for a better view.

The cars pulled up, the graduates jumped out and "walked" to get their diplomas, then returned to their car and pulled away, so the next graduate could take their turn.

After getting their diplomas, most of the graduates pulled back into the adjacent parking lot from the church to cheer on their fellow classmates.

I realized as I was taking pictures that I was crying.

Even though I don't know any of these kids, I felt SO happy for them. EVERY kid deserves to have this moment of celebration and recognition, and to have a special memory of their graduation day, and so many of them are being denied those memories because of the virus.

That being said.....my enthusiasm was slightly dampened by the graduates behavior when they pulled back into the lot across the street.

The carefully choreographed social distancing that was going on while getting their sheepskins was quickly forgotten on the opposite side of the street and there was lots of squealing, hugging, crying and kissing as everybody reunited with their classmates.

As heartfelt as it all was, I wondered at the wisdom of slobbering all over one another like that..........just sayin'!

Graduation (Filipino: Pagtatapos) is the award or acceptance of an academic degree or diploma. For Filipinos, the term “graduation” usually refers to the graduation ceremonies undergone by graduates who have finished a level of education. Some view a person as having truly graduated only if they have “marched” (Filipino: nagmartsa) onstage to accept their diploma during the graduation ceremonies. Thus, graduation may be also considered a coming-of-age ritual for young Filipinos.

Graduation ceremonies are held at the end of March or, in some cases, the beginning of April of every year.
