Texas A&M University's Labrotory for Biological Mess Spectrometry (LBMS) is implementing ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) to better analyze protein structure and folding. LBMS was given a $1.4 million National Science Foundation grant to develop a state-of-the-art instrument incorporating the latest IM-MS hardware and software for acquiring and processing data. In joint development with Houston's Ion Works, the device will rapidly characterize protein structure, a crucial first step in cellular processes and drug discovery - and central to diseases such as Alzheimer's Parkinson's and type 2 diabetes. The instrument will provide Texas A&M researchers access to technology not generally available at other institutions.

Visiting Artists as Social and Education Change Agents: Step Two of the TAMU Interdisciplinary Ceramic Water Filter Project & Receptacle Exhibition *

On the Texas border, along the Rio Grande River, there is a group of small communities known as The Colonias. It is in this area that more than half a million people live without running water in their homes. When B. Stephen Carpenter, an associate professor in the Teaching, Learning and Culture program, heard about The Colonias, he teamed up with Oscar Muñoz, the deputy director of The Colonias Program in the center for housing and urban development at A&M. The two stumbled upon the pre-existing concept of a water filter made from 50 percent clay and 50 percent sawdust and struck proverbial gold. They contacted "Potters for Peace," a group that travels around the world working with local communities and distributing the water filter. Carpenter and Muñoz recruited Richard Wukich, an art professor in Slippery Rock, Pa., Manny Hernandez, an art professor at Northern Illinois University, to help as consultants and technical advisors, and Bryan Boulanger, an assistant professor in the Zachary Department of Civil Engineering and part of the Environmental Water Resources Division at A&M. In addition to the professional consults on board, four graduate students have joined the program, including Muñoz.

A steel I-beam was loaded in compression in a 500,000 pound load frame until it failed due to local buckling of its individual plate elements. The MTS 500,000 Pound Test Frame is commonly used to evaluate constructional materials such as steel and concrete, to determine their maximum strength. Peter B. Keating, associate professor of structural engineering in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering, Dwight Look College of Engineering, focuses his research on fatigue and fracture of welded structures, structural analysis and design and experimental stress analysis. This photo was taken in the High-Bay Structural and Materials Testing Laboratory complex. The high-bay area contains a two-foot thick heavily reinforced concrete strong floor suitable for large scale testing.

The eighth annual Texas A&M Workshop in the History of Books and Printing will take place May 17-22, 2009, in the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. This five-day workshop provides an intensive, hands-on introduction to the history of books and printing. The workshop is intended for librarians, archivists, students, teachers, collectors, and private individuals who have an interest in the first three and a half centuries of the printed book. The course consists of a unique combination of labs and seminars designed to provide students with practical experience, as well as a broad historical survey of the field. The lab sessions will concentrate on printing in the hand press era and its allied technologies--typecasting, papermaking, bookbinding, illustration, and ink-making. During these sessions, students will have the opportunity to cast type in a hand mould. They will also set type, prepare it for the press, and print on a period-accurate common press. The seminar sessions will provide a chronological survey of book and printing history, with the collections of Cushing Memorial Library providing examples of some of the most significant artifacts and books in the history of recorded culture. These classes will begin chronologically with Mesopotamian clay tablets and medieval manuscripts, before focusing on developments in the hand press era.

In the Exercise physiology lab students have the opportunity to measure blood lactate production during various stages of exertion during exercise. The main purpose of the lab is to examine the changes in the byproducts produced during exercise. The students are specifically comparing the variations between these byproducts in hot and cold environments. At Cal Poly College of Science & Mathematics, students apply skills they’ve learned in class and experience theories proven first hand.
