Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Necmiye Ozay troubleshoots with EECS Graduate Student Research Assistant Petter Nilsson at Mcity Test Facility in Ann Arbor, MI. on September 13, 2017.

Ozay’s group designs algorithms that can take information about the rules of the road, the specs of the car, and the laws of physics and then produce a program that enables the car to drive itself safely. Unlike programming designed for specific models of cars in particular locations, this more general way to program a self-driving car can work for different vehicles in different countries.

Man I (Maggie) Wu, a PhD student in robotics, begins to set up equipment for her research related to how lower-body exoskeletons can be used to support people during walking by applying power at the hip, knee, and ankle, in her lab in the Engineering Research Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

Wu said the purpose of the investigations is to learn how people respond to lower-body exoskeletons. Specifically, she’s interested in times when the exoskeleton makes an error. The users' responses will then inform the development of future exoskeleton controllers to support human-exoskeleton coordination and fluency.

Jacqueline Hannan, a PhD student in industrial and operations engineering, demonstrates walking with a lower-body exoskeleton at the Engineering Research Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

This is part of Man I (Maggie) Wu’s research. Wu, a PhD student in robotics, said the purpose of the investigations is to learn how people respond to lower-body exoskeletons. Specifically, she’s interested in times when the exoskeleton makes an error. The users' responses will then inform the development of future exoskeleton controllers to support human-exoskeleton coordination and fluency.

Xiangyu Peng, a PhD student in robotics, uses an upper extremity exoskeleton to demonstrate his research project which looks at the effects of electromyographic biofeedback on exoskeleton usage at his lab in the Engineering Research Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

Peng said the goal of this research is to develop an adaptive controller for upper extremity exoskeletons that can adapt over time to the person's changing capabilities, and thus increasing the user's performance on exoskeleton usage.

I am coming from Chennai, southern part of India.

I am in Year 2 of PhD under supervision of Prof. Ghoshal in the Dept. of civil engineering and applied mechanics.

My research area is “Environmental Engineering” and I study the treatment of contaminated groundwater with the help of bacteria and nanoparticles.
