The robot is able to walk without a gantry and has an ankle motor that its predecessor, MARLO, lacked. The ankle motor allows for the bipedal robot to adjust more accurately to the shape and form of human movement.

A team of EECS researchers led by Kevin Fu, Associate Professor, and Daniel Genkin, Assistant Professor, have discovered a microphone vulnerability that allows attackers to remotely inject inaudible and invisible commands into voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa using light.

Students at Royal Roads University are getting support to pursue advanced degrees in priority areas like science and technology, thanks to a new $180,000 graduate student scholarship fund to boost research and innovation throughout the province.

 

The new merit-based scholarships, administered by Royal Roads University, are part of a $12-million investment that will support awards of $15,000 each for students pursuing graduate degrees in research-intensive or professional graduate-degree programs.

The new material could potentially help expand use of magnetic fields to modulate light and be used in cutting-edge technologies such as communication in space, optical wireless networks, and sensing for autonomous vehicles.

Elizabeth Callison, Graduate Student Research Assistant at Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering tests the drag characteristics of biofilm (the green slime that grows on the bottom of ship hulls) inside the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory at 1085 S. Using a laser line scanner, Callison can get the profile of the biofilm which later will be used to print a 3D rigid replica to test the differences between biofilm that can flutter and move as opposed to a rigid one.

With this information, Callison hopes to show what proportion of the drag of biofilm comes from its compliance (ability to move). This would be useful to be able to tell at what point it is necessary to clean a ship hull from biofilm so that it would still preform well, i.e., continue to reach its top speed, and less fuel consumption.

Andrew Gayle, a Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Research Assistant, and Alexander Hill, a Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Instructor, monitor a new reactor designed to produce ammonia for fertilizer without relying on fossil fuels.

U-M’s team is pioneering a system that harnesses energy from sunlight, reducing the reliance on temperature and pressure to bring the hydrogen and nitrogen together. It will pull nitrogen from the air using an air separation unit while splitting water molecules to produce hydrogen. Those gases will then be compressed inside the reactor to create ammonia at significantly lower temperatures and pressures than traditional methods. Each step in U-M’s process is driven by solar power, through both electricity-generating panels as well as new catalysts that help fuel chemical reactions with light, known as photocatalysts.

The sensor is able to detect a variety of qualities from a distance of more than 100 feet away and could be used to identify traces of drugs and explosives, as well as speeding the analysis of certain medical samples. Previously such a sensor was only able to be used in closed proximity.

 

Islam's research group built a laser-producing device that is able to send an infrared laser of various intensities through a series of different fibers that are connected.

Lee is administering a project as part of CEE Professor SangHyun Lee research group in which they track the varying stress levels induced by their physical environments. Participants wear sensors that track heart and perspiration rates, and blood pressure as they move outside of the facility in a variety of environments.

Maria Redoutey, Graduate Student Research Assistant at Civil and Environmental Engineering, works on developing small scale functional actuators to be used in micro-robotics inside Evgueni Filipov’s laboratory located at 2144 GG Brown on North Campus Ann Arbor, MI. on Wednesday, February 27, 2018.

Many components of micro-robots must be fabricated in a flat sheet due to their size (on the order of micrometers). This results in a limited range of motion, especially in out-of-plane bending, which is needed for many robot movements such as walking or gripping. If the micro-robots could be fabricated in a flat sheet and then reconfigure on their own into a 3D shape, their ranges of motion could be greatly increased.

Redoutey is working with a shape memory polymer that is 3D printed on top of a flexible polymer. When the materials are heated, the stress releases and folds at the clear hinges into a 3D box.

Ozay’s group designs algorithms that can take information about the rules of the road, the specs of the car, and the laws of physics and then produce a program that enables the car to drive itself safely. Unlike programming designed for specific models of cars in particular locations, this more general way to program a self-driving car can work for different vehicles in different countries.
