Photos of the crack are quickly analyzed by computer vision algorithms to calculate the length. The developed method can be applied to ships for monitoring structural health.

The robot is able to walk without a gantry and has an ankle motor that its predecessor, MARLO, lacked. The ankle motor allows for the bipedal robot to adjust more accurately to the shape and form of human movement.

Lee is administering a project as part of CEE Professor SangHyun Lee research group in which they track the varying stress levels induced by their physical environments. Participants wear sensors that track heart and perspiration rates, and blood pressure as they move outside of the facility in a variety of environments.

The objective is to design and construct a larger, pilot-scale unit whose size, capacity, and design flexibility will allow it to be used for in vivo testing with live animals in either an actual farm environment (e.g. pork or poultry production facilities) or the

Christina Reynolds, Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Research Assistant (center) prepares a large-scale apparatus connected to the tailpipe of a heavy-duty tractor-trailer during vehicle certification testing at the EPA's National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, MI. on May 16, 2019.

Tailpipe exhaust is filtered through a desiccant to remove water and then an adsorbent to remove carbon dioxide. The result is a cleaner exhaust of primarily nitrogen gas.

Reynolds, with direction from CEE Professor Christian Lastoskie, has partnered with the EPA and has scaled her project from bench testing at ~1 gram to proof-of-concept testing at 1/8th of full-scale, or about 25 kilograms of adsorbent material.

Ernesto joined four other speakers at a session dedicated to talking about challenges and opportunities for collaboration across research and professional sectors toward sustainable clean water supplies. His talk focused on water quality monitoring and trust in the water supply system in Mexico City, Mexico.

Manoj Thota, a graduate student research assistant in mechanical engineering, makes adjustments to a prototype of an origami traffic sound barrier in an anechoic chamber in the G.G. Brown building on the University of Michigan's North Campus on November 7, 2017.

 

The barrier combines a set of cylindrical rods with an origami base. The origami base allows the rods to be easily reconfigured in different patterns, which are designed to block different noise frequencies. This technology could be applied alongside busy highways to block different noise frequencies depending on how traffic is moving. The barriers are also wind-permeable, lighter, and better at dissipating specific frequencies than current barriers.

 

The research was conducted in the Structural Dynamics and Controls Laboratory under the direction of Kon-Well Wang, the Stephen P. Timoshenko Collegiate Professor and Tim Manganello / BorgWarner Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering. Thota helped lead the research.

Team Michigan RobotX works on deploying their autonomous vessel off the shores of Strawberry Lake in Pinckney, MI. on September 17, 2018.

The team is preparing for the 2018 Maritime RobotX Challenge, a competition set in Hawaii every two years that hopes to advance autonomous surface vessel technology through a series of tasks including obstacle avoidance, object detection and recovery, and signal recognition.

Students at Royal Roads University are getting support to pursue advanced degrees in priority areas like science and technology, thanks to a new $180,000 graduate student scholarship fund to boost research and innovation throughout the province.

 

The new merit-based scholarships, administered by Royal Roads University, are part of a $12-million investment that will support awards of $15,000 each for students pursuing graduate degrees in research-intensive or professional graduate-degree programs.
