Just going through the wayback machine and thinking about Diane's pending move to Iowa City. This season of Girls has made me remember with fondness this 2005 trip to Iowa City. Here's Amy in the house on Brown Street, I think, on the morning after her 30th birthday.

Our group of WFU friends was gloriously reunited at Jen and Rachel’s (and it felt so good!) after being apart since before Christmas. The gathering was extra awesome because Scott and his wife Kelly had a baby daughter over break and they brought her by to say hello—she is beautiful (button noise, chubby cheeks) and beautifully named (Maeve).

The indignity of being a grad student:

Jialu is a teaching assistant for an introductory programming course. In this assignment, the students make a website with a moving image that you have to click. Imagine having to grade 100 of these...

But, then, there's the more important question: why is Princeton teaching undergrads to make those annoying web advertisements?

online doctorate programs are very helpful for those who want to increase their chance in job or even promotion, you can take it in just 2 years.

winkingaphid: Just thought I'd pop in to say your work really inspires me! What subjects do you use to get these cool abstracts?

artmuted: @winkingaphid Very nice of you, thanks! When I first started I did open shutter self portraits. They would take 5-10 minutes. When I got back into it this year I started with the sky, road and trees I saw on the way to work. I then started looking around more during the day... Really looking and not ignoring anything as possible subject matter. I still shoot a lot of landscape shots but some objects I've shot are trash cans, a granola bar wrapper on my desk, my pants as I wore them, parts of my hands and face, a backlit door, a piece of hanging toilet paper in the men's room, the steering wheel, dash, hood, a plastic bag, a ceiling light, stairs, a box, my teeth, a roll of paper, air vents, sinks, cups, legs of tables, tinfoil, zippers, the horizon, clouds, the highway, windows, glass, buildings, lights, lamps, water, ponds, puddles, traffic, leaves, wood, etc. sometimes I look for color, sometimes texture, sometimes light/dark values. I try not to think too much and just shoot. Sometimes I'm moving when I shoot, sometimes I move the camera. Sometimes I move the object. I experiment a lot and try to learn a little from each shot. I have hundreds that I don't post and I only edit for contrast, brightness and color adjustments. I don't layer or copy/duplicate shapes or anything... But that's me. Hope that helps!

winkingaphid: Thank you, those sound like great tips! One last question: do you use a professional camera for these shots or are they all done with your iPhone? @artmuted

artmuted: I used to use an all manual Pentax k-1000 with b&w film but 99% of what you see on IG is my iPhone 4 using the apps Top Camera & Slow Camera. There a bunch if you search iTunes for 'slow shutter'. I've tried some high end Canon and Nikons from work but like my old Pentax they don't show a live preview like my iPhone... I like making adjustments as I capture a scene about half the time. I've also done time lapse and video frame imports to create the same type of image but it's much faster using my iPhone. I tend to like the instant feedback...

Congratulations to the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics Class of 2018!

I started a graduate library science program in Fall 2007, and I was hyped up about the first day of school--so much so that I thought a photodocumentary of the day was in order. My plan did not survive contact with the enemy--both the photodocumentary and the grad school plans. In any case, I started out at the beginning: my bookbag on the kitchen chair.
