Taken with my 'handler' supertremendus. We were detained by the NYPD for about an hour after shooting in this area, this shot is proof we got out of that situation without further incident and equipment intact. Go team!

I started using this notebook when I began grad school. Two years later, the original purple cover has faded into beautiful bleached tones.

Two nights ago I was pulling an all-nighter at the student halls of residence. Well, I am a night owl but this has been getting extreme of late. It was in the wee hours of the morning when I noticed myself staring at a Word document in the glass reflection and had a moment of thesis-writing-induced existential crisis...

... and stared blankly at the warm lighting from the pavement outside that was beckoning vs. the cold fluorescent lighting in the study room that seemed to hint that I was overstaying my welcome...

... and took a selfie with my phone.

What about "Cat in Ear" technology? CIE observations in the future?

Since I originally posted this image back in January we were able to connect with the photographer who did this portrait for us back in 1976 while we were at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Thanks very much, Wil. We remain very pleased we have this wonderful picture even though we both look slightly older than the two young people you photographed years ago.

me in my office in Giannini Hall at UC Berkeley, in 1999, the year i did most of my initial research at Point Reyes National Seashore -- and i'm still working on it (wrote several paragraphs for the last chapter of the book manuscript this morning) sixteen years later. but not for much longer, i hope!

At Dance/Movement Therapy Theory Class.

The spring banquet is this Friday. I played dress up and tried on some different outfits. I took pictures to help decide what to wear. This is just an outtake I enjoyed.

Convocation was unimaginably boring. WORST. SPEECHES. EVER. oh.. except for the guy who had enough balls to stand up there and criticize the singacensorship laws. props to him.

From now on, I insist on being called Master Strategist Carli. or Strategiste of War Carli, which I think has a slightly more femine ring to it.

Purple flags are legislative, pink flags are executive and agency materials (EPA, federal register, etc), yellow are the few precious CRS reports I found, and green is judicial.

I have all the research. I've read or skimmed most of it, including a 200-page hearing from the House in 1999 that I won't print but have read almost in its entirety. I've highlighted the sorts of things I'll be referencing in my paper so that I can quickly jump to them and quote/source them.

I've taken notes all throughout on my methodology: places I've faltered, when I've used print resources versus electronic ones, what I think of PACER (hint: CRAP).

The outline is in front of me, in pen - why can't I just get it written? These are epic questions. There's nothing left to do but start, I suppose. Damn you, blinking cursor, I WILL BE VICTORIOUS.

I use several Arabic dictionaries on a regular basis, but Hans Wehr is the most basic stand-by for almost everyone doing Arabic. This is my second Hans Wehr, bought after I finished the CASA I program in 2000. CASA killed my first Hans Wehr (which I bought in 1995), and CASA II has finally killed this one. I'm just starting my third Hans Wehr in January 2007, and I'm told that when that one dies, I will know Arabic.

I couldn't make through grad school, or likely life in general, if not for my dogs. Even a quick session of fetch before leaving for class puts things in perspective and reminds me that there are more important things than writing the perfect paper.

Since newly laid eggs are almost completely transparent I place them in a dish on a dark table top and direct a light at them from the side to get a better view. This also helps to illuminate the opaque/white eggs which are unfertilized.
