This Carthusian Priory is now in the care of English Heritage.

Mount Grace Priory was founded in 1398 by Richard IIās nephew Thomas de Holland.
It is the best-preserved Carthusian monastery in England. The priory is even used by historians as a ātype siteā, or model, for the study of other medieval Carthusian buildings.
Mount Grace was one of only nine Carthusian monasteries, also known as charterhouses, in medieval England.
Carthusian monks lived solitary lives. They spent most of their time in isolated cells and lived according to a strict timetable.
Mount Grace was one of the last monasteries in Yorkshire to be suppressed during the Reformation.
In the 17th century, part of the priory was remodelled as a mansion.
In the early 20th century, the site was bought by wealthy industrialist Lowthian Bell. Bell enlarged and remodelled the mansion at Mount Grace in the Arts and Crafts style championed by William Morris.
We drove through the idyllic surrounds of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall this morning and stumbled on the local model boat club giving their ships and boats a run on one of its lakes. It's been quite a few years since we have seen them in action but they are quite fascinating to watch.
This shot features three different generations, a stealthy black monster at the rear, not sure what sort of boat the one on the left is, it had no rigging at the rear to give it away (perhaps just a fishing runabout) and the star of the show, "Grace" a beautiful model in the front on the right. Grace was even emitting smoke from her funnel.

It is such a beautiful building. The lines, the reflection of the windows and his round shape.
The building is located at 1114 Avenue of the Americas (also known as Sixth Avenue), but the main entrance is on 42nd Street, between 5th and 6th.

Mount Grace Priory, in the parish of East Harlsey, North Yorkshire, England, Set in woodlands within the North York Moors National Park, is represented today by the best preserved and most accessible ruins among the nine houses of the Carthusian Order which existed in England in the Middle Ages and which were known as charterhouses.
The Mount Grace Charterhousewas founded in 1398 by Thomas Holland, 1st Duke of Surrey, the son of King Richard II's half-brother Thomas, Earl of Kent. It was the last monastery established in Yorkshire, and one of the few founded anywhere in Britain in the period between the Black Death (1349ā50) and the Reformation. It was a fairly small establishment, with space for a prior and a total of twenty-three monks.

New York, New York
I spent a week in New York with my friend Grace Weber last month, and I did three shoots while there - including one for her new album which will be out later this spring. We had been shooting on the rooftop of the building that one of her friends lives in, when I looked down and saw this one. Her friend discovered that we'd be able to get onto this rooftop by climbing through his neighbor's small (and square) kitchen window and climbing down a little ways. So of course, we did it.
I was really hoping I'd run into Chuck Bass or Blair Waldorf while shooting on the Upper East Side...but no luck. ;) I guess I'll have to just continue watching Gossip Girl on TV.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a photo of a huge wood stave flowline that drops water from Bear River into a hydroelectric dam. This photo shows Grace Dam, which diverts water into that flowline. It was built in 1951, replacing a 1908 dam that is still submerged in the river. This dam has a concrete base but the main dam is made of wood cribbing and rock fill with a concrete spillway. It is 185 feet long and 44 feet tall, owned by PacifiCorp Energy

Grace is a songer/songwriter from Milwaukee, WI that currently lives in NYC. She was home for Thanksgiving break last week, so I drove to Milwaukee to do a shoot with her. I'm also designing her MySpace, which will be up early next week. Her voice is phenomenal...she was recently on Oprah as a part of Oprah's Karaoke Challenge. I had an awesome time working with her and shooting in some awesome Milwaukee locations (it was pretty cold, but the rain/snow held out until the very end of the day, so we were able to do a few outdoor shots), and I hope our paths cross again :)
