National monuments and museums in Washington DC were closed during the U.S. governemnt shutdown in 2013.
Tonight I had the absolute honor to greet and show honor and respect to the World War II Veterans as part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor Flight Homecoming. I've had the honor of meeting some of them once before as part of a freelance job for the local newspaper and tonight was just a way to personally show thanks.
I think this particular group of veterans were especially unique: the government shutdown resulted in the memorial in their own honor being barricaded when they went to visit it. These heroes removed the barricades and were able to rightfully visit the homage to their own hard-fought battles.

Tonight was so moving it's hard to think about without getting choked up all over again. See if there are any similar events near you. It is a must for any patriotic American citizen. Washington DC, Sunday October 7, 2013. Closed entrance to the Smithsonian S. Dillon Ripley Center on the National Mall. This is the seventh day of the government shutdown. On a normal Sunday this time of year DC is packed with tourists but today there are very few. Many of the most popular tourist attractions are closed thanks to the Tea Party gangsters in the US House Of Representatives.
Postscript. On the 16th day of the shutdown the Senate voted 81 to 18 to raise the debt limit and reopen the Federal government. The legislation was then taken up by the House where it passed by a vote of 285 to 144 shortly after 10PM. In the early hours of Thursday, October 17 President Obama signed the bill. Furloughed workers will start returning to work today and Federal facilities will reopen. The shutdown cost our economy tens of billions of dollars, disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of workers and deprived many citizens of vital services.
Roads were closed and backcountry camping was prohibited this past weekend (Oct. 5-6, 2013) at the Red River Gorge Geological Area in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach. I feel it in the air, summer's out of reach.
During the shutdown, I was lucky enough to be able to fly over Acadia National Park, and take a few photographs of the scenery. Even though I knew the park was closed, it was still shocking to see just how empty the top of Cadillac was. After careful inspection I could identify two rangers and their vehicle, as well as two pedestrians in the small overlook to the left of center near the bottom of the image. Can you find them? I wonder whether the hikers ended up talking to the rangers, and what that conversation would have been like.

This magnificant bull elk has so much attitude, but the cow is not impressed! This was taken off the road between the Roosevelt Arch and the actual entrance into Yellowstone Park from Gardiner, MT. The entrance was closed due to the government shut down but the little bit of area to the Roosevelt Arch was open the first day of the closure. It was a nice little consolation for visitors from around the world Who were evacuated from the Park or denied entrance. The next day the Roosevelt Arch was barricaded too.

ocean beach was closed because of the government shutdown. A man was given medical assistance by a Park Service Lifeguard, police officer, and ranger who were still on duty though most park service workers were furloughed. SFFD paramedics also helped and transported the man
