Persepolis (Old Persian: Pārśa,[2] New Persian: Takht-e Jamshid or Pārseh), literally meaning "city of Persians",[3] was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BC). The earliest remains of Persepolis date from around 515 BC.

It exemplifies the Achaemenid style of architecture. UNESCO declared the citadel of Persepolis a World Heritage Site in 1979.[4]

The complex consists of a remarkable merging of different architectural styles from across the ancient Near East, as well as native Persian and Elamite traditions. Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite influences are to be found throughout the complex.[16]

The Gate of all Nations, referring to subjects of the empire, consisted of a grand hall that was a square of approximately 25 metres (82 ft) in length, with four columns and its entrance on the Western Wall.

I have a few minutes of internet access this morning, so I wanted to show what I did yesterday...I will be back to catch up with you all in a few more days!

Yesterday was my 40th birthday and my wife surprised me with an overnight trip to Boston to have dinner with my brother and sister-in-law and some dear friends. What a great surprise and a wonderful time!

Having lived in this area from 1986 until 2004, we thought we knew it all...I admit, however, that I had never noticed this very old cemetery that is on the Boston Common. I guess the world looks a bit different when you view it through a camera.

I wish we could stay longer, but we have to get back to NJ....I got tickets to the Patriots/Giants football game!!!!

Love my board shorts, don't own PJ pants, so board shorts are my sexy pants ;)

Anyway lots of fun memories had while wearing my board shorts, tagging along local fishermen in Indian Ocean looking for scuba diving & surfing spot... camped by the beach, woke up starving and ate ramen noodle and grilled fish for breakfast :) I've always lived in a coastal city... from Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean, and now that I'm living in the Midwest (where Billy Ocean's get outta my dreams get into my car is still the hit playing at local club ;), I'm constantly reminded to all those fun memories by my board shorts.

A mask is an artifact normally worn on the face, typically for protection, concealment, performance, or amusement. Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes. They are usually, but not always, worn on the face, although they may also be positioned for effect elsewhere in relation to the wearer's own head.

Of all weird things that I own... a mask is not one of them, who would've thunk it?

Persepolis:

Archaeological evidence shows that the earliest remains of Persepolis date from around 515 BC. André Godard, the French archaeologist who excavated Persepolis in the early 1930s, believed that Cyrus the Great chose the site of Persepolis, but that Darius the Great built the terrace and the great palaces.

Darius ordered the construction of the Apadana Palace and the Council Hall (the Tripylon or three-gated hall), the main imperial Treasury and its surroundings. These were completed during the reign of his son, King Xerxes the Great. Further construction of the buildings on the terrace continued until the downfall of the Achaemenid dynasty

1 of 3 - Gronk-cake - the original

Its that time of year again in New England, and once again we find our Patriots playing in the Super Bowl. So, today is a big day.

The "Gronk-cake" came about last week, and so it was fitting to add a couple more key players to the "iron" this week. For those of you who don't know... #12 is Tom Brady, #15 is Chris Hogan, and #87 is the lovable (but injured) "Rob Gronkowski!"

I can't believe some imperial (French, German or English) or semi-imperial (US of A) power didn't cart these amazing statues off to a museum thousands of miles away. Of course, other bits and bobs from Persepolis are definitely not in Iran but in foreign museums. How lousy is that?
