Goodenough Creek and Campground is at the foot of the Bannock Range. It was an unsuspecting saturday afternoon when I had to admitt that my soul would suffer that scission forever, with a part gone far away indefinitely. Like my body would have lost an arm, an eye, a kidney; perhaps a heart. It was exactly like that, having a foot amputated and still feel the insidious itch coming once and again. So it was all a lie, I was just another pretender.
Inside my mind heard Ibn Sina* wise words: "Universe itself is full of love ghosts." He said: "Easy off, it's the only death you can come back from." Muttering, heard my own voice speaking to the vast empty space on my way: "Let ghosts die, let them rest in peace. For there is where we belong."

Fue un inesperado sábado por la tarde cuando tuve que admitir que mi alma sufrirÃa los efectos de una escisión por siempre, con la otra parte de viaje permanente. Como si mi cuerpo hubiese perdido un brazo, un ojo, un riñón; quizá el corazón. Era exactamente asÃ, como tener un pie amputado y aún sentir una insidiosa comezón. Asà que todo era una mentira, y yo no era más que efecto de una ilusión.
Dentro de mi mente escuché las sabias palabras de Ibn Sina* : "El universo está lleno de fantasmas de amor." Él añadió: "Pero, tranquilÃzate, es una muerte de la que se regresa." Murmurando, pude escuchar entonces mi propia voz hablándole al vasto vacÃo de mi tiempo: "Mejor dejar morir a los fantasmas, déjenles descansar en paz. Pues es a la muerte a donde pertenecemos."

This little card is a reminder that we are all good enough, today, right now, just the way we are. It's like this: how many times do I think, "she's better than me at art" or "she's a better mom" or "she's prettier". Am I alone here? I just wanted to quiet that inner critic for a few minutes. So this card came together quite easily, as I thought that anyone with such beautiful glittery reddish hair and green wings was just as good as anyone else. Again, a little sappy, but the feelings are real.

Greener future's power
Australia plays a critical role in the global transition to a renewable future. It comes with an obligation to show the world how to do that best.
Look around your home, school, office or nearest shopping mall and I’d guarantee there’ll be at least one, but more likely dozens of, lithium-ion batteries. Their all-encompassing ubiquity and utility has been a triumph of modern chemistry, with pioneers John B Goodenough, M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino richly deserving their shares of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. There’s a world-wide race to find sources of lithium, and to control its processing into the batteries that are key to the renewable energy transformation. I would guarantee that this race, and its associated range of environmental and economic factors, is likely not widely known. In other words, a perfect topic for a Cosmos Briefing to inform us all on a revolution that will become ever-more central to our lives.
Demand for renewable energy technologies is growing across the world, a critical step in decarbonising our economies. But their constituent materials – such as the lithium used in batteries – have limited availability. Currently 55% the world’s lithium supply comes from Australia alone, so our nation has a particular responsibility to ask: how do we mine these materials in a responsible and sustainable way? And what comes next? Those were at least just some of the questions I posed to Monash University’s Dr Mahdokht Shaibani, a postdoctoral fellow in materials synthesis and future energy storage, and Professor Rick Valenta, Director of the W H Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre at the Sustainable Minerals Institute at the University of Queensland. Rick specialises in geology and geophysics as applied to mineral exploration and mining.
Our experts surprised me with a number of insights, from the staggeringly low amount of lithium in a lithium-ion battery (just 2%!) to Earth’s equally staggeringly large lithium reserves (potentially centuries-worth, even as production increases five-fold by 2050 according to the World Bank). What the discussion made clear about Rick and his colleagues’ research is that we need to do more than just identify these vast reserves. Rather, we need to compare their relative environmental cost in extraction, not just the economic cost – as is effectively done now in the global financing of such mines.
However, it was an insight from Mahdokht that most shocked me: she explained that Australia captures around 0.5% of the ultimate value of the lithium we export overseas. By the time it’s in your laptop or mobile phone at a notional $100 value, other nations will have made $99.50 in taking the more valuable steps to process lithium into batteries. Both experts, and all of their colleagues in mining and academia, want to see this brought onshore. It’s a desire that the Australian and State governments share, with a range of new funding incentives commencing to help do just that.
Our uniquely influential role in a global supply chain that creates an essential low carbon future comes at a time when the USA – our closest, and certainly most significant, ally – reaffirms its commitment to leading the world in climate policy with a Green New Deal. Undoubtedly, this will further grow the need for lithium-ion batteries. What a wonderful convergence of opportunities for Australia: if we sustain our focus and invest in this sovereign capability, there’s an enormous commercial benefit for the nation that will contribute to the betterment of the world. To misquote the great Jim Henson: it’s lucrative bein’ green.
I would encourage you all to watch the lithium Briefing – it includes many more insights into this fascinating future – and certainly entreat you to join us on 11 February for the next Cosmos Briefing, this time on food security and the role of genetics in agriculture. Fittingly aligned with the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science, this will be an all-female Briefing.
This international day comes at a challenging time. In the years up to 2020 we saw steady, albeit still too slow, improvements in the gender demographics of science. Those improvements are at risk of going into reverse due to the enormous, and disproportionate, impact of COVID-19 on women. The new year presents an opportunity to ensure that reversal is temporary by keeping pressure on all levels of government, the education sector and industry.
On a more positive note for the future of women and girls in science, the long-anticipated National Evaluation Guide for the efficacy of diversity programmes by the Office of the Women in STEM Ambassador is now out. Surprisingly for a field dominated by data-driven insights, science has been limited in its self-appraisal of the success of schemes within it to drive greater diversity. I applaud my friend and fellow astronomer Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith for leading her team’s stellar work to change that.
As the world rightly races towards a decarbonised future, let’s ensure it’s a future that all of us get to enjoy.
