Much of my excitement at being in a bookstore comes from the place itself, the understanding that I can stay here for as long as need be. The unspoken rules we've developed for the bookstore are quite different from the rules that govern other retail enterprises. While the bookstore is most often privately held, it honors a public claim on its time and space. It is not a big-box store where one buys closets of toilet paper or enough Tabasco sauce for the apocalypse; nor is it a tony boutique that sells prestige in the shape of sequined dresses or rare gems; and it's no convenience store either, raided for a six-pack, cigarettes, and a Nutty Buddy on the way home from a hard day at work. The cash register's chime does not define how long we can linger. A bookstore is for hanging out. Often for hours."
I had already started to read this beautiful book online at archive.org but you know me, don't know? - unless I can hold it in my hand and turn its pages, it's not really a book. So I ordered it on ebay from someone in Rozelle in Sydney and it arrived today. It's in almost brandnew condition complete with a €15.00 price sticker on the back and a bookmark inside from the "Curious Fox English Bookshop, Flughafen-straße 22, Berlin".
Of course, I immediately emailed curiousfox.de to let them know that their book has completed its long journey from Berlin in Germany to its new home with a (ex-)German in Australia. It's what booklovers do!

The author, Lewis Buzbee, named the book after a letter that Vincent van Gogh (who had worked as a bookseller) wrote to his brother not long before he died, "I think that I still have it in my heart someday to paint a bookshop with the front yellow and pink in the evening ... like a light in the midst of the darkness."
i have been following this woman's story since she was kidnapped in somalia in 2008.
to read her story, her history and her experience is amazing.
for many, many, many hundreds of days, there were no real answers as to whether or not she was even alive.
and then to emerge from her experience and make change the way she did has affected me deeply.
originally her story caught my attention because here was a woman who was following her dream, trying to make a life for herself filled with change and adventure, suddenly thrust into an unimaginable situation.
then, to see what amanda has done with her life, now that she has it back, is unreal.
i got to meet her once, at a talk she was giving in ottawa ( remember, my other amanda l:)??).
she gave me chills with her grace and her absolute openness.
anyways, i am half way through. i will share more when i am finished.

My Review:
NO, NO, NO, NO!!!
WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?
Come on now, can we please stop torturing Jace and Clary? Seriously? A couple can only deal with so much crap especially when one thinks he is evil incarnate to begin with.
Alec..What the hell has gotten into that boy? Did he truly think Magnus had no other relationships before him even though he's older than Methuselah's grandmother? Alright, since Alec is simply just a relationship beginner I will cut him a little slack.
Jocelyn has somehow made herself the most annoying character in the books. Sorry honey, you can't run away from your past that easily and think it will go away if you try and ignore it. What you once thought was the right thing to do is going to get you or your kid killed if you don't wake up and accept some things. As it was, she was almost killed.
I'm glad to see more of the spotlight on Simon. He is such a profound and important character in these stories.
The first half of the book dragged a little bit, but I once again the last half saved the book.
Yes, I'm addicted now. I will not hand my head in shame!
(Almost) all the books I brought to the lake with me. We had so many fantastic days to relax and read.
I finished Cutting For Stone the first day of vacation, One Hundred Demons the day after, and skipped over the other easier targets right into Anna Karenina, this year's epic reading challenge of the summer. I left the rest out on the desk for the ladies to dabble in, though.
The Dream of a Common Language will make another great one-day read. Same for The Painted Word. I brought that copy of Wild for Evan's mom, and Evan slipped Feet of Clay in my suitcase after I packed. Lucifer 3 I picked up in Chicago for my coworker who couldn't find it in New York.
And I forgot the copy of Watership Down in my suitcase all week long.

My Review - This is the second book in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series.
Ok..This is fluff, my fluff. That's the story and I'm sticking to it. Every now and then we need some fluff in our lives and this is mine. Now that's out of the way here comes my review.
In a nutshell Clary and the gang are back and they have to try and defeat Valentine. In the process some people die, Simon becomes a vampire, Clary and Jace are fighting their feelings for each other because they are siblings (supposedly, I'm not buying that for one minute.), Alec and Magnus sorta hook up, a girly werewolf becomes enchanted by Simon (WTF?? That came the eff outta no where), Luke helps, Jocelyn is still in her coma, and we have lots of demons and fighting. Oh..I forgot the Fairies make an appearance as well. Some official Clave people come around and hate on Jace and imprison him a couple of times (which he escapes).
Clary is still the biggest pain in the ass known to mankind, angels, and downworlders. She never knows when to shut up and listen. She runs head first and asks questions later after she is captured and becomes the damsel in distress. It's getting kinda old.
Jace is still my favorite. However if he keeps being a smart ass every single time he talks I may change my mind. No one is like that all the time. He's fun, but getting to the point where the character is becoming unbelievable.
Alec and Isabella are the two most underdeveloped characters ever. I want to like or dislike them, but right now all I feel is nothing. They have the personality of rocks right now and not the fun pet kind.
Magnus..oh Magnus. I hope he shows up more in the next books. I'm getting a good peak at him and what he can do and I want to see more.
The writing still seems immature at best. I still think a 15 year old could have written this, but since I'm considering this my fluff I am rating it as such.
Reading 150 books is one of my goals.

as expected, the mystery and suspense is insane. I highly suggest this one, dear junior readers!
"The automatic writing project started out as an activity among friends and locals. I would write a line someone else would write a line and so on... Then people would overhear us and ask if they could participate and write something too (which surprised me) of course I said "yes!" At that point I realized that lots of people have something to say. I started asking strangers to add entries, then I graduated to offering people $1.00 to participate, some people do not accept the dollar and some pay me a $1.00 (paying it forward). It's becoming quite a lovely, surprising and compelling project. People from many walks of life are participating: homeless, a news reporter, academics, doctors, drug addicts, lawyers, tourists etc... People have written things in my journal that they'd never say out loud, not to anyone. Some of it's so sad, some intriguing, hilarious and so on... At the end of the day, every one of these people understand that their entries are being uploaded to the internet and are comforted in knowing that they will be heard. I have no idea where this is going, but it's going just fine! FYI: English is not everyone's first language here. I will be illustrating the book/journal after the text is done. I hope that everyone who reads these entries learns something about people, mostly that we never know what someone else is going through.

My Review - I found this book really easy to get into. I love historical fiction especially set in the turn of the century when women were fighting for their rights to vote and the ability to make choices regarding their own bodies.
The Birth House covers a variety of women's issues from the turn of the century. When you read this book you have to forget everything you know and put yourself into the mindset of a woman from the turn of the century living in a rural tight knit community.

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor Nnedi Okorafor’s work gives you everything you crave stylistically about Fantasy and Sci Fi, but incorporates ideas so unprecedented they could easily outshine the characters and the plot. But my favorite thing about each tale I’ve read from this author is that she doesn’t ever allow that to happen-the characters and the action shine just as brightly, if not more so, than the innovative concepts that turn the wheels of the plot. Binti is relatively short, but it’s a very intense story that reads like the best parts of a novel that another author might have stretched out with filler and awkward descriptions. You won’t find any of that here; there is no respite from the tension that will carry you all the way through to its conclusion without a pause to catch your breath. By which I mean, this is a breathtaking story. Binti is a uniquely talented young person from the Himba people, who are sticklers for tradition and not overly fond of outsiders. Despite this, Binti’s love for mathematics and the magic she can work with numbers and formulas has driven her to apply to Oomza University, the most prestigious academic institution in the known universe. Although she is the first of the Himba people to be accepted, her family and community are less than thrilled and forbid her to go. Binti is of course undeterred by their disapproval, and begins her journey armed only with her talent, a jar of the cleansing clay her people rub into their hair and skin, and a strange artifact from her homeland, whose secrets have yet to reveal themselves. She faces a great deal of judgement from those who consider her people provincial, isolationist, and backwards, but she remains fast in her goal to attend the prestigious university where she will be able to achieve her dreams and maybe even unlock the mystery of her artifact-and then, of course, something unforeseeably terrible happens. Do yourself a favor and read this novella. Coming of age has never been quite this weird.
