#Superstition

I've always wanted to use this collector coin for an MM theme, and the "Superstition" theme gave me another opportunity. My dad used to give me special edition coins for collecting, usually 5 or 10 Deutsche Mark (DM) pieces that were (and still are, but now as Euro, of course) issued for special anniversaries or in honour of important personalities. This is one of the coins. I'm keeping it in my wallet as a good luck charm, and whenever I change the wallet, the coin comes along.

There is nothing superstitious about the theme of the coin itself: a 10 DM silver (werewolves, anyone?) coin, issued for the 150th anniversary of the now worldwide operating Kolpingwerk, a Catholic Charity founded by Adolph Kolping (Kolping was a German shoemaker and later a clergyman who had originally initiated it in the mid-1800s as a journeyman union to improve the working conditions of apprentices), but the mere fact that it's a good luck charm makes it an ideal candidate for "Superstition", and there is also a quite funny story connected to it.

Ages ago, when I visited a street party with friends, we went to a shop to buy some water bottles (ever since, I've long come to always bring a home-filled bottle along to spare me the hassle of buying on the go), and I didn't have any coins in my purse other than this 10 DM coin. I hesitated to use it, but then thought, "Come on, don't be superstitious, it's time to let go", so I paid for my bottle of water with it. And instantly regretted it, but again thought, "don't be silly, it's just a coin". Of course, I kept vigorously discussing it in my mind ("No, it's not just a coin, it's extra special"), and after we had been walking for a while, I decided to ask my friends to lend me some money, ran to the shop, felt even sillier than before, but what matters is: I got the coin back ;)

To emphasise the illusion of superstitions, I placed the coin on the "warped" mirror tile (fixated with modelling clay) and focused mainly on the distorted reflection. In the coin's design, there is also a triangle: a symbol that is not only perceived as holy but is also connected to the secret society of the Illuminati, about which myths and conspiracy theories persist to this day; so I tried to highlight it.

Size info: The coin's diameter is 3 cm/1,18 inches.

HMM, Everyone!

#MacroMondays -- #imperfection

I used this little glass gecko in "Orange and Blue" for Macro Mondays almost a year ago. That shot was set up to disguise his imperfections but this shot they are on display -- the poor thing is missing a leg and had his body snapped in two then was badly glued back together. I still keep him around because he's a good luck charm! :-)

Reposting again,

because been having the hardest time dealing with a tough subject I failed twice already,

pharmacology could reign and ruin med industry by eating our brain cells and fleshes :)

how are you doing, hope you're making lemonade out of lemons - and send me some charms :)

ps. I really need all available, because otherwise I'd stuck up in med and never end up going for neurosurgery/oxford/phds/all the common dreams people have.

I was sick for a while, now helped and being taken care of a lot, too. Kindness speaks softest and loudest even in silence.

Oh, happy winter 2025! are we there yet?!

Also, anyone thought of publishing their book or start writing?

february 14, 2010 is the chinese new year. the chinese have a different new year based on the lunar calendar. this year is the year of the tiger. i don't know if its a good or bad year based on their predictions but i hope all will be better for us all.

needless to say, this is not a real tiger. its just a tiger i found in a mall with that red thing (don't know what its called) around its neck for good luck.

so happy chinese new year!

"kung hei fat choi!"

So I came across this little lucky charm in the garden by accident just looked right down & saw it. It is a four leaf clover! I took it as a sign..

I am going to a casino today (not joking.. I really am (not vegas though I wish).. just a local one run by the Mohegan Native Americans.

---------------------

"The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the common, three-leaved clover. According to tradition, such leaves bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally. According to legend, each leaflet represents something: the first is for hope, the second is for faith, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck."

~Wikipedia

------------

When i get back from the trip I will try & write out more what I did to this one. But to keep it short, I brought it in from RAW. tweaked the exposure, contrast & vibrance, then did a curve adjustment layer, added texture, and painted with light. I also did a hue adjustment layer to get out some of that ucky brown in the background

Passei so pra deixar um oi pra vcs. Vou pra rua. NYC ta la fora esperando por mim.. Vamos??

Here just to say hello.

NYC is out there waiting n me. Let's go?

The Plateresque façade of the University of Salamanca, dating from the 16th century, stands out as one of the most emblematic examples of the style in Spain. Built in Villamayor stone and divided into three ornate bodies, the façade displays medallions of the Catholic Monarchs, heraldic elements, including the coat of arms of Charles V, and mythological representations. The work symbolizes the connection between the university, founded in 1218, and the royal power of the Hispanic Crown. One of the most sought-after elements by visitors is the small frog carved on a skull, whose discovery, according to tradition, brings good luck in exams. The profusion of details and symbolism, characteristic of the Plateresque style, transform the façade into an authentic stone altarpiece, narrating the history and relevance of the University of Salamanca, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as a center of European education and culture.

Always wear my “good-luck” basketball rosary hat to get comfortable when IU plays basketball. Humorously gifted to me by my daughters when I was whining about how well the Catholic schools were doing in the NCAA tournament last year.

The Japanese cat figurine maneki-neko (beckoning cat) is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. The figurine depicts a cat, traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail, with a paw raised in a beckoning gesture.

Rich in symbolism and regarded as a talisman of good luck and perseverance to the Japanese people. Making them a popular gift of encouragement.

They are typically made of papier-mâché.

Modelled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism. Each daruma design, (particularly the shape, colour, eyes and facial hair) have their own history and symbolic meaning dependent on area of make and artist.

Gold kanji on the front often reads fuku-iri, meaning bringing luck.

When purchased, the figure's eyes are both blank white. The owner selects a goal or wish and paints in the left eye of the figure's two eyes with Chinese or Japanese ink. Once the goal is achieved, the right eye is filled in.

The tradition is to keep the daruma for a year and burn it afterward to express gratitude and to release the Kami (divine spirit) that resides within it.

When in Japan, I had hoped to get to the Shorinzan Darumaji Temple in the city of Takasaki - purported to be the place of origin of these dolls in the 17th century.

Sadly it was not to be, but enjoyed seeing this large one in the foyer of our hotel in Tokyo.

Around 30 cm in height.

Red Maneki Neko Cat Necklace

This Maneki Neko cat is actually a chinese style lucky cat, symbolising wealth. The colour red on the lucky cat is a protective colour, which is supposed to keep away evil spirits, and illness. The charm hangs on a 24 inch chain (so hangs down 12 inches). I have also added a creamy white circular bead and black lucite flower beads to make the necklace that little bit more unique!

Most of the houses in southern Peru have a couple of little bulls in ceramic on the roofs of their houses, it's to bring good luck.

This is an ancient inca tradition, but inca relied on images of alpacas called illas, then replaced by little bulls, jars and a cross, after the Spanish Christianisation.

新年快樂!

(Bombycilla garrulus) Belmont Park, Kelowna, BC.

I've been waiting all winter for these guys to return to attack the Mountain Ash in the backyard of this neighbour. They had taken all the fruit from a tree only four houses away when I first saw them, and the owner had told me that they usually return in February to finish the area. The day before we had chatted and commented that they had not been back yet (although I had seen them along the Mission Creek Greenway several times, but always far above me, unphotographable. So, when, late in the afternoon, a combination of factors, which at the time had felt like bad luck, conspired with the good fortune of taking a walk with my wife, I stumbled across the flock almost in my back yard, and unexpected late afternoon sunlight, I sprang into action and satisfied one of my main goals of the season.... Lots of unpublishables of course, but these made the series cut—some of greater quality than others, but each with some element that means something to me....

THEME: CHARM

SUBJECT: A PENNY

(not quite 1.5" horizontally)

Years back, I was walking with a friend at a parking lot when he saw a penny and picked it up. He looked at me and said, this is a good luck charm. I asked why? He said because the penny is faced up! I've been picking up faced up pennies since and I'm still waiting for my luck to strike. :-)

My wife had hardly uttered the words, "Wonder if we'll see Steller's Jays on this side of the Park (we'd enjoyed one at Alleyne Lake two years ago)," when there they were: an inquisitive pair, both looking rather scruffy as many birds do this time of year, but full of energy and quick to demand tribute for their presence. They put on a great show for the two days we observed them. Fortunately, they work for peanuts!

As soon as I saw this display, I thought of my mom. I think of her a lot when April arrives. I usually post a photo on April 12th, her birthday, but missed it this year. This is the photo I had planned on posting on the 12th.

She was a believer in good luck charms. I still have her lucky horseshoe hanging on my shed. When she passed away, I found a 4-leaf clover, in her wallet, that she had carefully laminated onto a square of cardboard. I still have it ... and am sad that time has crumbled it away.

I so wish that she had been here to see the birth of her grandchildren, to watch them grow up ... and to see them become mothers too.

This is for you mom {{hugs}} xoxo ♥

This good luck charm my husband did for me. I wear it to every exam that I have and it does help...

I think every handmade gift is something very special!

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, here is a new version of my Shamrock Box (previous versions: 1.0 and two simplified variants). Current version was designed so that it can be used together with my Flagstone Paneling technique which results in a nice and clean area between the molecules. A consequence was that I had to redesign the stem but I think I ended up with a better one than in the original. Just as the original, this molecule can be used for a tessellation or for a box as in the picture shown here.

20170315_Scout_SaintPatricksDay

Michaelbrook Marsh, Kelowna, BC.

Not 20 minutes earlier, I had mentioned to my wife, who was about to veer off in another direction, that I hadn't seen Re'ddy in this location recently —since he no longer has competition and can perch wherever he likes. As I walked along Mission Creek trail, I spotted him. I knew he'd not take off as long he didn't know he was being watched. I got to Gordon Bridge and made the necessary adjustments to my camera settings before I pulled it out of the bag because, I also knew, as soon as pointed the glass at him, he'd be off.

I still didn't get it perfectly right, but it's a start, and we'll keep working on it through the winter. The last image in the set shows a new idiosyncrasy by which to ID this guy that has wintered here since 2014-15.

Favre is Going to Get Chewed Up and Spit Out! At least... that was Yoda's and Adam's prediction.

The Seattle Seahawks matched up against the Green Bay Packers (at Green Bay) in Saturday's playoff game. Unfortunately, after an early lead...the Seahawks lost.

Since the Seahawks won last week, Adam asked me to continue the tradition of a uniformed pug shot.
