Goedereede is a city and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality had a population of about 11,000 in 2010, and covered an area of about 154 km² of which about 83 km² was water. It consisted of the west part of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. Goedereede merged with Dirksland, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee on January 1, 2013.
Goedereede received city rights in 1312 from Sir Gereart van Voorne. The future Pope Adrian VI (1459–1523) was at one time pastor of the parish church of Goedereede. During a great fire in Goedereede in 1482 the old "Katharina Church" and its tower were destroyed. A new church was erected in 1512 beside the Toren van Goedereede (Goederede Tower), which still stands today. Goederede went into a long decline, losing trade to better-sited ports. There were insufficient funds to maintain the church. In 1706 the dilapidated building was pulled down, but the tower was preserved.
The former municipality of Goeree also includes the communities of, from west to east, Ouddorp, Goedereede (with Havenhoofd), Oostdijk, and Stellendam.
The Brouwersdam is a dam, part of the Delta Works, from the island Goeree-Overflakkee to Schouwen-Duiveland, in Zeeland. The Haringvlietsluizen are floodgates, also part of the Delta Works, from Goedereede to the border of Westvoorne and Hellevoetsluis on the island of Voorne-Putten.
Income consists mainly of tourism and fishery. Because of the extended beach close by, Ouddorp has a large number of camping grounds. Ouddorp, Goedereede and Stellendam have all an extended fishing fleet.
Every year around this time I take some pictures of this picturesque town on a sunny autumn day.

The Toren van Goedereede (Goederede Tower) is a gray square brick tower in Goedereede, Netherlands, 39.5 metres (130 ft) high, belonging to the Catharina church. It was built in 1512. From 1552 to 1912 the tower served as a lighthouse, and went through various changes during this period. Today it has been restored and is a museum, housing a carillon.
Church tower
The original tower was part of a large parish church in the then-prosperous fishing and trading port. Adriaan Florenszoon Boeyens (1459–1523), the future Pope Adrian VI, was pastor of the church. During a great fire in Goedereede in 1482 the old "Katharina Church" and its tower were destroyed. A new church was erected in 1512 beside a giant new tower, which still stands today.[3] A large bell that sounded the hours was cast in 1519, with the Latin inscription, Est mea vox grata, quia sum Maria vocata et Georgius Waghevens Me fecit Anno Domini MCCCCCXVIII (My voice is welcome, because I am called Maria and George Waghevens made Me in the year of our Lord 1518.) A second bell was added in 1647.
Lighthouse

Although at first unlit, the tower served as a landmark to help ships navigate. From 1552 the tower served as a lighthouse. The light originally came from an open coal fire.
Goederede went into a long decline, losing trade to better-sited ports. There were insufficient funds to maintain the church. In 1706 the dilapidated building was pulled down, but the tower was preserved. In 1823, the spire of the church was removed to improve use of the tower as a lighthouse. On 26 February 1834 a 45 metres (148 ft) high light with optics was installed. The optics were replaced in 1879. In 1908 the tower was equipped with rotating optics with a light intensity of 180,000 candlepower. In 1912 the lighthouse was extinguished when the West Head Lighthouse in Ouddorp came into use.

The "Slikken van Flakkee" are between Goedereede and Herkingen (behind Melissant). The west side area is bordered by the Grevelingenmeer. The total area covers approximately 1,500 hectares reclaimed land, and 1250 ha. water which is shallower than 2.5 meters. The shore length is approximately 20 km. The width of the area ranges between 500 and 2500 meters.

Middelharnis was the most important fishing village on the island for centuries. The early twentieth century saw an end to fishing. One can still see fishing warehouses, small fishermen's houses and a small shipyard around the port. In the course of the twentieth century Stellendam, Goedereede-Havenhoofd and Ouddorp became important fishing villages. The ports shipped mainly agricultural products. Especially in the autumn, during the sugar beet campaign, there was a hive of activity in and around the ports

Dirksland is a town and former municipality on Goeree-Overflakkee Island in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality had a population of about 8,000 in 2007, and covered an area of about 74 km² of which about 19 km² was water. The former municipality of Dirksland also included the communities of Herkingen, and Melissant. On January 1, 2013, Dirksland merged with Goedereede, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee.
The North Sea flood of 1953 did not have as much of a destructive effect on Dirksland as the rest of the island, because Dirksland is somewhat higher. Dirksland is the largest of the three communities within the former municipality and also has the only hospital on Goeree-Overflakkee island. The Van Weel-Bethesda Hospital is one of the smallest in the country, but has an excellent reputation. Dirksland can be recognized from a distance by the tallest water tower in the country. The towns are agriculturally focused and have several campgrounds for people who prefer a bit of rest over the busy Ouddorp area but still want to be close to shore. Dirksland has an inland harbor with a newly restored gate complex.

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence specifically impermanence, suffering and emptiness or absence of self-nature. Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.

Evil Corner (Dutch: Kwade Hoek) is a nature area northwest of Goedereede. It is part of the Goeree Dunes, a nature area on Goeree-Overflakkee in South Holland. It is managed by nature monuments.
