With their spiky shells and primitive-looking faces, alligator snapping turtles are often described as dinosaur-like.

They are the largest species of freshwater turtle, found exclusively in the United States. Males can weigh up to 80 kg. Astonishing.

It was fascinating to be shown this intriguing creature and in particular to learn of their tongue-lure, used to attract unsuspecting prey. These turtles remain quite still with their mouths wide open as seen here, revealing what looks like a delicious, bright pink wriggling worm, twitching back and forth. Prey that mistakes the turtle’s tongue for a tasty snack will swim right into the range of the hungry predator’s jaws.

This is a captive specimen. When I visited this aquarium, I neglected to ask what stopped the turtle from eating the other inhabitants. It was the largest aquarium I had ever seen in a private home and beautifully kept.

Kabukicho, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan

The conductor is leaning towards the cab window, keeping his eye on an SUV rapidly approaching the Centerville Road grade crossing as his freight train speeds west. Crew members have said that you never know when an incident is going to happen, but when it does it tends to happen quickly. I imagine that was going through the conductor's mind as he watched the SUV hit the brakes and heed the gates and flashers just out of frame as the train passed over the crossing at around 40MPH.

Norfolk Southern D8-40CW No. 8391 is leading train 38Q, tagged in dirt on the tank by a member of the fuel pad crew with the name GODZILLA. I don't know why, but the name seemed appropriate for these old "widecabs" that NS inherited from Conrail after the split in the late 1990's.

My annual encounter with the Godzilla-bird. This time it was just the two of us because of Corona nobody else was around. Both of us did behave kind but with some mistrust due to past differences.

Look at him, I am sure he recognized me!

The picture was taken outdoors, the iguana was partly lit by direct sunlight (the face). The rest was in shadow. I used multi-RAW processing to create the dark background and to play with the light and bring out the details.

After a long and successful career as a city stomping monster fighter, Godzilla retired to pursue his passion for raising Dionaea muscipula giaganticus or Giant Venus flytraps.

The head of Godzilla looms large over the Shinjuku Toho Building in the vibrant Shinjuku City District of Tokyo, Japan.

This shot was taken really early in the morning on my first full day in Japan. I got to the area where the tour bus would arrive an hour earlier so I could walk around Shinjuku taking pictures.

I also photographed the area at night, when the neon was bright and throngs of people crowded the streets.

This is another recent eBay purchase, the 1980 Ben Cooper Godzilla jiggler. This rubber critter was originally released in 1974 as a generic dinosaur, and was apparently rereleased in 1980 as Godzilla. He still has his cord and his Godzilla tag. His belly is marked "Ben Cooper c1974 Made In Hong Kong". I had the generic dinosaur version as a kid.

I've always wanted to try making Godzilla! This MOC is based on the design from the Monsterverse movies and was super challenging to pull off. There are so many small details and subtleties to his proportions that took a lot of trial and error, but I think I've found a level of accuracy that I'm comfortable with.

The amazing photo editing for these shots was done as always by the wonderful @loaf_builds make sure you check out the other monsters from the collab as well!
