Rusland, a short street in the centre of Amsterdam, gets its name not from the homonymous country - in Dutch - but rather from one Willem Ruusschen (a variety of spellings) who in the fifteenth century owned a garden, a 'tuin' or 'land', here. After 1986 the entire area was thoroughly renovated and largely became a 5-star hotel. But the facades have by and large remained intact, though heavily restored.

One of these is now a hotel restaurant, and above its door it preserves this ornamental fanlight of a steadfast palmtree. In the late 18th century there was a greengrocer here who apparently made good enough to have this Louis XVI-Empire style shop with its decoration. Whether that grocer's last name was Palmboom - a name occuring now and then in the registers of the Dutch East Indies Trading Company VOC - or rather that this palmtree signifies steadfastness and perseverance. I don't know. Perhaps both.

In 1745 Cornelis de Coster - who he?, I dare ask - handsomely published a longish poem of about 8 pages on the occasion of his brother-in-law's fiftieth birthday. This Cornelis Braam had been in service with the VOC and weathered many a storm, no doubt more awful than today's dreadful Amsterdam weather. The poem adduces an enduring palmtree as an example to Godfearing folk, whom God's hand preserves through trials and tribulations and especially when life's end is in sight... at 50, the author suggests:

 

De Palmboom zien wij opgeheven,

Ten doel van onweer koude en wind,

Maar wyl hy zig vol moed bevind,

Verheft hy zyne kruin en schynt voor niets te beven;

Zoo dringt een Waereldling, vol kragt en moed,

Door ’t aardsch gewoel, ten trots van ramp en ongelukken,

Terwyl Gods hand hem steeds allom behoed,

En voor geen tegenspoed nog lyfsgevaar doet bukken.

De Zon, die daalende in de kimmen ondergaat,

Vertoont ons d’ondergang van ’s levens dageraad.

Bhai Vasti Ram (1708-1802), was son of Bhai Bulaka Singh, who is said to have accompanied Guru Gobind Singh to the South in 1707 from where he returned with his blessings to settle in Lahore. Vasti Ram lived through the long period of persecution the Sikhs endured and their eventual rise to political power in the Punjab. He devoted himself to the study of medicine, and became famous for his skill in the use of indigenous herbs. He was deeply religious and Godfearing, and treated his patients free of charge. Stories of his healing power and of his piety spread far and wide, and he came to be credited ‘with supernatural powers. To say nothing of the common people, he was visited by important Sikh chiefs who came to seek his blessings. Among his frequent visitors were Jassa Singh Ahluvalia and the Bharigi sard’di’s, Lahina Singh, Gu[jar Singh, Ganda Singh and Jhanda Singh. Maharaja Ranjit Singh himself became an ardent devotee early in Ins career.

He often used to say tliat it was due to Bhai Vasti Ram’s blessings that he came out successful in the battle ofBhasin (1800), which confirmed him in the possession of Lahore. Bhai Vasti Ram died in 1802 at the ripe age of 94. A marble samadh was raised near the Lahore Fort at the spot where he was cremated. Maharaja Ranjit Singh used to visit it on the occasion of his death anniversary. The structure, like Jain Mandir and many others, faced the wrath of angry mob after the disturbing Babri Mosque incident in 1992.

Ganesh Chaturthi Preparations at the Yuvamitra Mandal workshop at Bandra, Mumbai.

  

I travel to Bandra for work and pass by this workshop daily. It's a lovely sight of white and sometimes even an idol covered in a translucent red and green cloth. Divine sightings.

 

Photographing the Ganpati idols is always a delight. And an overwhelming one. Four years and I'm still a little kid when I enter a workshop. There's something so endearing and out-of-worldly about these idols. But maybe that holds for every motif of belief :)

 

I'm a happy child after this session. But maybe not at the edit.

 

Looking forward to covering the actual event with multiplied excitement and precision.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin is the main Lutheran church in Estonia and one of three functioning medieval churches.

 

The present appearance of the Cathedral is the result of much rebuilding. The original temporary wooden church is thought to have been built on Toompea Hill in 1219, and was first mentioned in 1233. The stone church was begun ten years later. The spire dates to the baroque period, and several chapels, from even later periods.

 

Notable items in the church’s interior include numerous gravestones from the 13th to the 18th centuries and numerous nobles' shield epitaphs from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Among the famous people buried in the church are the well-known captain Pontus de la Gardie and his wife, Sophia Gyllenhelm, daughter of Swedish king Johann III; admiral Samuel Greigh, Catherine the Great’s lover; and the Russian admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern, who led the expedition around the world.

 

If you take three steps from the main entrance of the Cathedral toward the southern nave, you will find a large stone slab which reads, "Otto Johann Thuve, landlord of Edise, Vääna and Koonu Ehis grave, 1696 A.D." The Estonian Thuve was an especially merry and licentious sort, who adored raucous parties with wine, women and song. As he lay dying, however, he was overcome with a sudden sense of contrition. He asked to be buried at the threshold of the Cathedral so that the godfearing people, who kneel to pray upon entering the church, might eventually save his soul from his sinful ways.

Pargat Singh of Sur Singh village in Tarn Taran, Punjab is a typical Majhail (resident of Majha area of Punjab).

 

Majha, from manjhla, i.e. middle, is the traditional name given to the upper part of the Bari Doab lying between the rivers Beas and Ravi and comprising the present Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts of India and Lahore district of Pakistan, although it is not uncommon to include the Pakistan districts of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Sheikhupura forming part of the upper Rachna Doab also in the Majha area.

 

Being an alluvial plain with sub-soil water and water table favorable for irrigation, Majha in the past has been the most productive and densely populated region of the Punjab; but, for the same reasons, it has also been the most alluring for foreign invaders who ravaged it time and again for many centuries. It was perhaps this frequent alternation of affluence and adversity that made the people of the region hardy and fearless, yet tolerant and god-fearing, qualities that made Majha the bedrock of Punjabi culture and history.

 

Majha is also the birthplace and early home of Sikhism. The first six Gurus, with the exception of the second, were born and brought up here. Even the second Guru, Guru Angad, who was born in a village in the Malva, made Khadur Sahib in Majha his permanent seat. In Sikh times political and religious authority was centred in Lahore and Amritsar, both in Majha. Of the seven towns founded by the Gurus, four (Goindval, Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Sri Hargobindpur) lie in Majha which is dotted with scores of historical shrines, including those now in Pakistan, connected with the lives of the Gurus. Four of the five Taruna Dal misls established themselves in this region while the fifth, Ahluvalia, occupied a major part of the neighboring Doaba.
