BNSF Railway's Denver - Stockton trackage rights manifest glides through Midvale, Utah on the former D&RGW on a stormy April 7, 2008 afternoon in the Salt Lake Valley.

Like you already know, I don't go to the Staples Sub much, but hearing an H1 Dash 9 leading a stack train made me try my luck. About an hour and a half from Hoffman to Sartell, I made it to the one spot where the Staples Sub gets nose light for eastbounds in the evening. I wasn't sure if I made it on time or not, which was pretty nerve-wracking. However, I guess luck was on my side today, as no more than 10 minutes after I arrived, I saw a headlight appear, and there the train came. Here, Q SSECHC blasts through Sartell at golden hour. Was pretty nice seeing one of these lead again, especially in this light.

BNSF C44-9W No. 993 and ES44AC No. 6298 power this Great Western loaded frac sand train over the Cache La Poudre River bridge in Fort Collins, Colorado, on March 2, 2021. The train will divert off onto GW trackage here and head to Halliburton in Windsor.

Just another Keddie shot.

Nonetheless, for a first day over Feather River Canyon, it was a massive score (at least in my opinion!). After hours of waiting, a westbound BN train finally arrived from the High line. At the time, I had wished that the H1's would lead but hey, it could've been worse.

Got close to getting CF'ed here as these DP's move away from us. We turned back west to follow and the pursuit was worth the effort as seen here: flic.kr/p/Zpe1KD . Location is approximate...

Utah Transit Authority and BNSF Railway trains meet at 2nd South crossing in Salt Lake City, Utah the afternoon of Sept. 3, 2009.

Having completed a photo runby, the 1995 Union Pacific Oregon Trunk special departs Gateway, Oregon for Bend.

We had previously shot this train while it was closing on South Junction. Although this photo location is a little over six miles south as the crow flies, it took 31 miles of driving to get here.

There's a good story that goes with our next shot in the chase. It is here:

An Arctic air mass is still settled in along the Front Range, with a temperature around -10F. BNSF 1095 and GATX 1243 lead the afternoon Chicago to St. Paul intermodal into Midway Yard the bone chilling day back of Jan. 25, 1997. I remember walking up to the Snelling Ave. bridge to shoot a couple of months old Goatboat Dash 9 and freezing in the wind and cold.

I wonder how the GATX SD38-2 did in fast intermodal service mixed with a new Dash 9 like this. They probably didn't get to 60MPH much on the Reserve Mining, but I saw these GATX SD38-2s on these Chicago to St. Paul intermodals more than once, usually by themselves. Seems like a bit of a miscast with that model known for lugging high tonnage trains at slow speeds. Couldn't have been much for tonnage on this #47 as trailers still ruled the intermodal trains from Chicago to the Twin Cities back in 1997. Wasn't soon after this that #47 was changed into an alpha Q-symbol.

I'm grateful to John Turner for his comments that made me research this area properly, after posting yesterday another shot taken here.

Taken from a higher viewpoint, SP's 8572 is an SD40T-2, a "Tunnel Motor" with additional ventilation grilles at the bottom of the long hood. I'm afraid I don't have an identity for the second loco, it looks like an SD45 with the flared vents at the front of the long hood.

My research lead me to the fairly stunning site of Greg Brown at www.flickr.com/photos/goatboat/ , and he has some pictures of this service apparently introduced earlier in 1996.

The train is about to enter the most southerly of the two tunnels here, close to the town of Dorris itself.

BNSF 968 and company roll through Colton alongside the Mount Vernon connector, which luckily enough didn't have a Union Pacific train on it standing by to make a run for West Riverside on it. The tracks here despite the view make a faint turn before straightening out again, but the glory of zoom photography can really change up the perspective.

BSNF Railway C44-9W No. 1034 works Utah Railway's RUT211 local in Provo, Utah the morning of April 4, 2010.

If memory serves correctly, this was my first pilgrimage to the (in)famous Mt Muller between Lake Park and Hawley, MN back in May 2009. Even 11 years later, I'm not sure I would go out of my way to see this now, but I guess if you're going to see a couple of Dash 9's on a stack train, the leader might as well be in H1 paint.

Still looking new, a pair of Goatboat Dash 9s lead an eastbound intermodal through the St. Anthony plant in St. Paul, MN in March 1997. Was a good first catch of the morning and don't recall why I didn't chase the 1117 east after a set out at Midway Yard.

Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway C44-9Ws pull intermodal traffic east through Kayser, New Mexico the morning of April 4, 1998.

I didn't know it at the time, but I was able to pull off a trifecta today of colorful leaders. The first one had an acceptable level of orange leading the Q-ATGLAC6-28 with BNSF 968 doing the honors. The H1 painted "Goat Boat" dates back to August 1996 and is one of the earliest units in the series of 960-1123 to wear this paint scheme. And almost 30 years later, it still stands out in the sea of pumpkins. With the addition of PTC, it's hauling 82 loads and 4 empties at 6423 tons and 8283' on this warm day.

Before UP's Stadler "hospital train" began its cinematic debut, a Savage, Minnesota - Pixley, California grain train departed Salt Lake City, Utah in a brief moment of "screaming sunshine" with BNSF 1043 taking an Oscar for best supporting actor. March 11, 2024

Goatboats at Roosevelt, Wash on September 18, 1997.

My first chase of the Union Pacific E units ended at Quinton siding, roughly 125 miles east or Portland. The train pulled by the Es met a westbound freight there. Since the rest of the run to Hinkle was over 70-79 MPH track, with minimal access, I decided to cut and run for home.

After a short wait, a westbound manifest growled by with an SD50 on the point. Once the freight went by, I crossed the tracks to shoot the train against the green spring color. Searing temperatures would soon remove any trace of green from the hillsides.

BNSF 735, 990, and 985 pull a Denver - Provo manifest freight into Utah Railway's Provo Yard on April 9, 2009. For a hot minute, Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway (as it was called soon after the merger) had two official paint schemes: one that payed homage to its northern routes (Great Northern) and one for the southern Transcon (Santa Fe). Sadly, it didn't last.
