Someone has spent a lot of very clever time putting this display together for all to enjoy. It is filled with wonderful puns and word play. HFF!
There are several gnome houses in the Fairytale Forest. Beautiful large mushrooms, designed by the designers Anton Pieck, Ton van de Ven and Henny Knoet and built between 1952 and 1980. They blend naturally into the surrounding park. The many paths and corridors around and in the mushrooms are a favorite with children who are looking for even more (moving) gnomes.
The music that a gnome plays on his spinet somewhere can be heard in many places. He plays Menuet in G major (Per Jocum. Opus II, Latin: "Just for fun, second work"), which is a well-known tune for many visitors.

The oldest part of the Gnome Village from 1952 was not included in the major refurbishment of 2018. The three separate mushrooms have been inaccessible to visitors since the end of 2017. In 2023, work has been resumed to restore these three mushrooms to their former glory. Completely rebuilt, they are again accessible around 21/09/2023. The walk-thru fairytale is for the youngest ones only.

The oldest part of the Gnome Village from 1952 was not included in the major refurbishment of 2018. The three separate mushrooms have been inaccessible to visitors since the end of 2017. It is currently unknown what will happen with it and when it will become accessible again.
After Doornroosje on the right-hand side, the actual Gnome Village begins. A short side path of the main route has been created here for children, with three mushrooms with low passages for them to walk through. There is also a small picnic table here, there are some gnome clothes hanging on a clothesline and there is a bridge over a pond. Gnomes cannot be seen here yet.
At the moment (2020) the whole looks very neglected and is crying out for action.

The The Gnome Tree (Kabouterboom) with Music Gnome (Muziekkabouter). With Christmas decorations here. This time with the gnome peeping through the door.
Kabouterboom
In a hollow tree, between the three abandoned mushrooms and the Great Gnome House, we find the first gnome of the village: the music gnome. The tree, in which a twisted face can be recognized in a Pieckerian way, is a popular climbing object for children.
Two viewing windows can be found between the roots; at eye level for small children, but can only be used by crouching for adults. A small space has been cut out in and under the tree in which we find a scene with a gnome playing the Minuet in G major on his spinet. In the back, a beardless gnome pops in from behind a door every now and then. The score drawn up is not that of the Minuet he plays: above it is written in graceful letters: Per Jocum. Opus II (Latin: "In jest, second work"), and the music is practically unplayable.
The music resounds from all the Musical Mushrooms in the Fairytale Forest. The first of the twenty on the route can be found next to the Kabouterboom. The suggestion is made that it is this gnome that produces the music that comes out of the mushrooms

Efteling designer Karel Willemen adapted Anton Pieck's original design on several points. The passages became wider and the thresholds disappeared. The position of one of the mushrooms has also changed slightly.
Willemen also added details: a collar between the stem and the cap of two mushrooms, a hatch, a bookshelf, a bell, lanterns, a heater and a sound effect of a snoring gnome. [ Loopings September 2023 ]

Winter Efteling
Winter Efteling is the opening of the Efteling in the winter season, nowadays from November to February. The event has been brought since the first edition as a distinctly different experience than the Efteling offers during the rest of the year, with all kinds of extras in the form of decorations, special live entertainment and winter catering and attractions. The park also has different opening hours than during the high season.
The Winter Efteling has been organized since 1999. After three trial editions, it was decided in 2002 to put the event permanently on the calendar. Until 2010, the park was still closed between the summer season and the Winter Efteling, nowadays the Efteling is open every day of the year and there is therefore no interruption between summer and winter season.

Doornroosje (Sleeping Beauty) about one week after the renovation was completed. More light by removing trees that were far too large. New landscaping as well and the formerly not visible side of the castle is now visible due to the construction of second path around the castle. This was the way down from the castle towards Kabouterdorp (Gnome Village) which used to be located fully in the shade.
Doornroosje
Doornroosje is the first fairytale in the route of the fairytale forest is also one of the oldest fairy tales in the history of De Efteling.
It is also one of the first ten fairytales at the opening in 1952, designed by Anton Pieck, although the current scene dates from 1981 and has some adjustments from Ton van de Ven. It is depicted with a castle on a hill, where visitors can climb up a staircase to look through windows through the bedroom where Doornroosje rests and the angry fairy sits on the spinning wheel. The chefs sleep in the kitchen.
