A mallard hybrid, gleaming in the winter sun

Poem.

Solid, gleaming ice.

Side to side, end to end.

Globules of frozen snow

cling to the old stone wall.

Iced branches straighten

like petrified fingers,

in the winter chill.

Blue and white hills

mark light and shade.

Still.

Silent.

In suspended animation,

but stunningly beautiful.

Each season has its

colour-profile trademark.

Winter’s is unique and breath-taking!

Falls Creek splits into three dominant plumes as it cascades over the highest promontory of rock that initially bars its way, forming a gleaming trident of sorts, before it flirts with gravity and tumbles over the moss-robed basalt lip in the foreground, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington.

Republican President Teddy Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress created the modern Forest Service in 1905, and part of Roosevelt’s motivation was to manage forests conservatively so that they could be harvested to benefit humanity in a more sustainable, generational manner. Roosevelt was also a keen outdoorsman, and he was able to appreciate the spiritual benefits of wild places.

The President appointed Gifford Pinchot as the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service, and Pinchot’s name is now attached to this wild, cedar-drunk landscape. Here, the rains of springtime burnish emeralds that emerge from the vibrant, besotted moss. I am grateful for the political currents of a century ago, when being a conservative meant conserving something for the future. I fear greatly that today’s political opportunists have gaping holes in their spirits and cannot see the beauty of the world, and they cannot recognize what is good.

Originally I took for Burgundy, but try as I might I could not convince Dennis or myself that it was the right colour. Luckily a teasel came to our rescue for Burgundy - although you will need a magnifying glass.

Wind driven clouds fill with the ineffable gleam of sunrise over the southern-most extent of the Hielo Sur, Lago Dickson, Torres del Paine National Park, Chile.

On the previous night, the tightly stretched tent fly hummed a resonant song as the cold wind raced down the ice and buffeted all in its path. As the sun rose, it was too much to hope for water calm enough to produce reflections, but the wind had largely abated and the dense cap of vapor that obscured the ice was gone, revealing bright, glaciated contours. Of the 80-odd souls camped at Lago Dickson, evidently the thought of sunrise was compelling to nobody but me. While extricating myself from the sleeping bag in the dark never feels particularly delightful, whatever perceived pain that results typically resolves quickly and I am almost always grateful for the opportunities that follow.

Self portrait of me gleaming the cube out front of my house. I had come up with the idea of attaching my camera to my skateboard via a bogen magic arm (pic below) for a rolling shot. It was kinda difficult as the arm extending out made the skateboard always want to tip over. No crashing allowed today..

I held an SB-26 shooting through a white umbrella triggered by a PW (which I just ducted taped all together to make my life easier) from the front right side of the deck. The flash kept freezing the ground more than I wanted, so I had to take a separate exposure without the flash to get the movement on the pavement that I wanted. Maybe I could have snooted the light a little more so the spread wasn't so wide so that I could have gotten this in 1 shot....I dunno I'll have to experiment with it more.

If you're wondering why my legs are tore up, it's from a photoshoot I did earlier in the day in the woods. The blackberry forces attacked me...

I found this photo from our neighbourhood last year, for a video of winter photos and a Christmas song, for our photography club last week.

It was a Swedish song, called Jul Jul strålande jul- about all the lights and gleams of Christmas.

My album of ice and snow here.

In spring, the breeding male American goldfinch (spinus tristis) sports a brilliant yellow hue, often flocking with other male and female goldfinches in trees near a feeder. Their sweet twittering is unmistakeable and fun to listen to. They are the state bird in Washington, New Jersey, and Iowa. Though these are breeding colors, they don't actually start nesting until July. Many parts of the US may not see the male in his bright colors, but they will see non-breeding males at their feeders.

Gleaming sunset during sea trial of the new spinnaker. You can see by how smooth the water is that there was not much wind. Sails were mostly hanging like a shower curtain, but the spinnaker did keep us moving. This was the first time I ever sailed with a spinnaker, so I suppose calm wind made for a better learning experience.
