After our 4 day heatwave when temperatures reached 40C, we have had a wet, cool day today - only 23C. I much prefer the cooler weather and the gardens are loving the rain.

I was going through my photos from our trip to the UK in 2009 and came across this photo of a Glasswing Butterfly that I took in the Butterfly House in Stratford upon Avon. I am really missing travel and don't know when we will be able to again. Probably not this year either.

La transparence et la lumière ainsi mélangés à travers ce tout petit papillon...

It's always a delight to see Glasswing Butterflies. Here's one nectar-feeding on Light-Blue Snakeweed and letting in the blue sky outdoors through it's transparent wings. The Butterfly House here at the Hortus has been rather 'empty' the last week or so, but today there were suddenly lots of Longwings and also Glasswings. They'll live a week perhaps, and then there'll be another generation.

Greta oto is a species of brush-footed butterfly and member of the subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, and subtribe Godyridina. It is known by the common name glasswing butterfly for its transparent wings, which allow it to camouflage without extensive coloration. In Spanish speaking regions, it may also be referred to as espejitos, meaning "little mirrors" because of its transparent wings. The butterfly is mainly found in Central and northern regions of South America with sightings as far north as Texas and as far south as Chile. While its wings appear delicate, the butterfly is able to carry up to 40 times its own weight. In addition to its wing physiology, the butterfly is known for behaviors such as long migrations and lekking. The Greta oto closely resembles the Greta andromica.

Torrential rain in the Utrecht Botanical Gardens yesterday had me seek shelter in the pleasant glass houses and the Butterfly collection. Here on a wilting Hibiscus are four of those wonderful Glasswing Butterflies.

Once their genus was Ithomia and it was under the name Ithomia oto that William Chapman Hewitson (1806-1878) described this one in the early 1850s. The genus was renamed in 1934 by Arthur Francis Hemming (1893-1964) and our beauties now go by Greta oto. They're transparent because they lack the colorful scales of other Butterflies.

I hope you all enjoyed the festivities and that 2026 brings you happiness, good health and productivity. Let's hope it's so much better than last year. I thought something tropical would take our minds off the snow. My car was buried under 4 inches this morning and there's more to come!

Glasswing Butterfly - taken at the Plas Pilipala (Butterfly House in Welsh, isn't it a gorgeous name!) at the National Botanic Garden of Wales

A butterfly with transparent wings? Surely not. Yet there is a species that exhibits this trait. Take a close look at the incredible Glasswing, an enchanting species that confounds science. Greta oto may sound like the name of a silent movie star from Eastern Europe but is in fact the scientific name for one of the most exquisite - and little known - species of butterfly on the planer. This butterfly’s claim to fame is that its wings, spanning up to six centimeters, are almost completely transparent. That’s right, you can see just about right through them.

Very common in my backyard, during winter time I can easily spot 20 or 30 individuals feeding around. At this moment, feeding on Heliconia latispatha.

This Nymphalidae butterfly is mainly found in Central America with few sightings as far north as Texas and as far south as Chile. While its wings appear delicate, the butterfly is able to carry up to 40 times its own weight.
