Once again I am here in the mid of the Western Alps admiring the breathtaking peaks after a summer storm. The fast moving clouds the wet grass the sun filtering through the clouds and in distance the noise of the raging waters of waterfalls. I spent more time here in the Alps because of the pandemic and I realized that there are no better places for me. Walking into these places completely deserted from any person it was a surreal experiece that made me tought about many things about my life photography social media etc. I think chasing trends likes and the public "success" is distracting us from the reason of why we started to take pictures.

My Middle Earth is here and I don't need nothing more.

After a long break from all the social media I am back with a new shot from a recent trip to the marvelous Ireland with my good friend @rob.lafreniere . I am not used to shoot iconic locations but The Dark Hedges is definitely a place to visit one time in the life the view is truly majestic . I was disappointed to see so much traffic in this epic lane and I saw a lot of trees carved by ridiculous statements and names on their bark.

Here I processed the image to render the scene more dark and atmospheric

This spring as usual I spent some days shooting new images and I pursued my need of reasearching new exciting subjects I did some researches and I was able to find new fantastic spots very little known with incredible creaative possibilities. The full moon rising behind Emory Peak and the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park.

Knowing the moon would rise after sunset but before it was completely dark I set up a vantage point to catch them rise over the mountains. I set up my big Gitzo tripod with my 70-200 lens using my Sony A6100 to get the extra "reach" of the crop sensor. With twilight still happening, the moon began to rise right behind the highest point, Emory Peak. I was able to capture the moon while keeping the ground decently lit by the waning light before night.

A little planning and a lot of luck!

“Oct 5, 2020 at 8:59:59am, I Was Enchanted” A 20 year dream realized. On Oct 5th I was packed up a ready to go with two of my hiking buddies to head out for a 9 day high mountain fall color trip to chase the golden large before the snows came. We were all packed up for car camping, so we could climb a trail for sunset, night hike out, and sleep in the cars, then move to another location and repeat. But we had a dream to score a walk up permit to go to the Amazing Enchantments. I have been lucky enough to score a permit to backpack the Enchantments 6 different times in my 20 year career as a professional photographer, but I have never been able to capture a shot of Prusik Peak and Gnome Tarn with the Golden Larches. I even made it up one other time during Golden Larch Time, but there was already two feet of snow on the ground and Gnome tarn was buried, so no shot. So at 5am on October 5th, the three of us all manned our computers hoping to see the lottery permits for the week pop up, as they release them randomly between 5am -9am. We had all given up, we hat not even seen a core permit pop up. I got it in my head that they might release some at the very last second. I refreshed the screen, put in the pertinent information, and hovered over the last number, and entered it at 8:59:59, and 16 permits popped up, and I snagged one for us! They were gone in less than 5 seconds. Oh My God! We are going to the Enchantments! I texted my two buddies, they could not believe it! So change of plans, now we all had to pack up our backpacks and head to Icicle Creek to prep for the hike the next day. And would a first day hike it was. I carried a 62 Pound Pack, 14 miles, something like 6000 feet of elevation gain, to arrive at this spot just in time for Alpenglow. And finally I realized a 20 year dream to capture this shot and Put it In the Bank!!! Shout out to the two guys that joined me on this adventure, Bryan Moore and Randy Gemar. What an adventure it was to see the Enchantments again, the larch were unbailable! Thank you so much for looking, much more to come

“Gallery Shot!”

Just returned home from teaching another sold out class. This one was the Big Adventure at Palouse Falls and in the Palouse Hills. Had another amazing group of students, and we were treated to some dramatic weather. This was especially true on our first night at Palouse Falls. A thunderhead built and rained on us a little then broke up. Luckily the ruminants hung around through sunset and I captured this new gallery shot of the falls. Look closely and you can see the rainbow. It will be in the front window of the Edmonds Gallery tomorrow, and one the way to the Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach on Metal. Lots more to come from this trip also. I have 6 days left to get the galleries caught up before I head out in the field again to teach my Big Adventure in Central and Eastern Oregon…Its busy season! Thank you so much for looking!

“Teton Sunset” I am finally back in the gallery after my epic adventure to the Grand Tetons to teach another fantastic group of students my All-In-Camera, Old-School-Style of photography. What a trip we had with a whole mixed bag of weather. This was supposed to be the worst weather night, I even thought about calling off class for the sunset shift. I am so glad I did not. This goes down as one of the most epic sunsets I have ever witnessed in the Tetons and it was a thrill to be teaching the students how to capture it. It was ever changing light and I could have posted 20 different images of its progression. One of these will certainly end up in the galleries. All I need to do is pick one, Hmmm... Thank you so much for looking

“Back to the big Adventure, Hitting the Big 5”

Back to my 18 day adventure hiking and backpacking Washington’s Big 5 Volcanoes. We did 5 nights around Mt Rainier, and this was one spectacular night! I believe each one of the images stands along as a gallery shot! I loved watching the clouds race across the mountain making each and every shot different and unique, finishing with the moon popping out in just the right place at the right time!. This is one of those nights I will remember always, and every time I look at these images I want to drop everything and head back into the mountains. But for now please excuse my absence from posting as Gracie the Adventure Van and I head back out into the field to teach my Big Adventure on the Central and Southern Oregon Coast. Feels like I have been in the mountains forever this summer, so this will be a real change of pace. And as always, these are shot Old-School Style All-in-Camera. And I would like to clear something up. Many photographer assume because I shoot All-In-Camera, I must be shooting in Jpg. This is not True, as I shoot in Raw, and convert the image in my Cannon DPP4 Software to a big boy Tiff File for printing. In both of my Galleries, the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds Washington, and my Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon, we make REALLY BIG Prints! The time it takes for me to convert an image to be ready for print from the camera takes less than 60 seconds… This the bonus of being an All-in-Camera shooter, no post processing time, so more time in the field. If you don’t understand how this is possible, come take a class, I will teach it to you also! Thank you so much for looking, and Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!

“Sunset, Sunrise Mono Lake”

Just back in the gallery after teaching my Big Adventure in Death Valley. It was so nice to be in shorts and t-shirts again and experience some nice warm sunshine! I had another great group of students, and I gave them one heck of a tour of Death Valley and the Alabama Hills. They all did a great job learning and using my Old-School, All-In-Camera Techniques. I have a ton of new images to show from this trip, but I decided to show my very last shooting day first. After class, I visited the amazing Eureka Dunes deep in the Death Valley Back County and I have some epic shots to show from that location. Heading out from there we made it to Mono Lake just in time to capture the very best sunset I have ever seen on this unique Lake. The very high salt content of mono Lake creates these strange formations call Tufa’s. I love these fascinating formations and finally on my 5th visit to the area I got the Gallery Shots I have been looking for. That was followed up by an excellent sunrise, then it was a two-day drive to get back home. Lots more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!

"Worth the Wait" After teaching another fantastic group of students in my Wallace Falls Class, I decided I was up for a big mini adventure in the park. I hiked my students back out to the parking lot, secured a campsite, repacked my backpack, and headed out to complete a 13 mile loop. I pumped out the couple miles to the falls and gave them another shot (I have shot the falls more times that I can count) and they are always spectacular! But then I realized I was behind schedule, and I really had to pick up the pace if I was going to make it for sunset. The climbing got steeper as I passed upper falls, and mad it to the ridge. Alright, less than an hour to go and 3 miles left, pick up the pace some more. I was now on flat ground and started hauling you know what, then I hiked into snow. Oh No, that was slowing my pace, making the hiking much more difficult. I slipped and slide my way along the trail trying to keep my head down and keep up the pace. I crap, I am not going to make it, hike faster. Oh No the hills are glowing, hike faster. Ok try Jogging with the pack. No Go, to much weight, Hike faster, Ok I’m passing the lake, keep up the pace. Oh No, I'm not going to make, hurry, hurry, Bam, I made it, and it’s happening, throw down the camera gear as fast as I can, shoot it, shoot it, shoot it, Pow Nailed that! That’s in the bank! Bam! Then it was gone! And I was chilling down fast, burr!, time to pack it all up super-fast and enjoy the 6 miles back to camp in an epic night hike! And after 15 years of wanting to get this shot in these conditions, I did it! And it was worth the wait! Thank you so much for looking!

One of my favorite moments of the year is the annual Perseid meteor shower hunt. I have been somewhat unlucky for last four years, but finally this year the conditions were right, thanks to the amazing weather and nearly New Moon! If looks could kill !!!

Well if the looks don’t kill the talons will !!!

This was another amazing encounter tonight with the female Sparrowhawk that has started to visit the garden, this time she settled down and started preening which gave me time to grab the camera and get some shots.

This is down the barrel of the lens and if you look closely you can see the blood from what I guess is a prior kill.

Just look at those eyes 👀 you can see why they are top of their game.

“A Two Hour Delay”

After teaching my Wallace Falls Class on Monday, I arrived back at Gracie the Cabin, to make my way to Larrabee State Park for sunset. I had plenty of time as I left the parking lot at 1:15. I made it about 10 minutes and was caught up in a backup for a jack knifed truck on Highway 2…Dang it! OK, OK, I can use the time to get ready. So while we were stopped I hopped in the back and made my lunch…then we moved… then it ate it…then we moved... then I packed up my pack…then we moved…Then I put on my boots…then we moved…and so on…two hours later I started to drive out of it…Dang it, it was after three. I drove as fast as I could without a ticket and made up some time, then just as I get to Chuckanut drive, I get behind the slowest driver ever!!! Dang it! ...Man…please…go faster…I can see the sun very low in the sky…Please go faster… This guys is doing 20 miles an hour in a 35 zone…Come on go faster…Dang it! I am going to miss sunset!….Please go faster….Now he has 20 cars behind him….please go faster….Finally he pulls over….Go….Go….Go…Finally I pull into the campground, pull Gracie up on her ramps, grab my pack and we are off jogging with the packs…Go Faster….We got to Hurry…Go faster….Finally we make it, drop the packs, set up the cameras and shoot….shoot….shoot, and then it was over. Holy Cow! What would have normally been an hour in a half drive turned into almost 4 hours, and I got there just in the nick of time to get this shot! Sunset in the San Juan’s from Larrabee State Park…Put that in the Bank!!! And that is what it is like sometimes, being a professional nature photographer! Now take a breath and go for a 6 mile night hike to de-stress…Thank you so much for looking

“Embarrassed”

Headed out on my days off from the gallery to take Foxy for a hike and shoot sunset. I have done a ton of hiking in the North Cascades, literally thousands of miles. I am embarrassed to say I had never done this hike before! What! How can that be? Did I think I had already done it? I don’t think so. In my mind are there just too many other good hikes in the area to return to? I am not sure how something like this can happen. I am perplexed. Or maybe the universe just wanted me to hold off to hike it at this time, in this moment, so I could have this experience. I will go with that, as Foxy and I had a truly magical experience. I loved the hike up through the Old Growth Forest, then breaking out into meadows, then hiking around the summit to come up the backside to discover a 360 view. (For now, this hike must remain unnamed, sorry) Then a beautiful night hike out! … I will certainly be back to shoot this again and again. A little earlier in the summer when wildflowers are out, as it looked like there was a ton, and again in the fall when the blueberries turn color. Whatever the reason this was not on my radar before it sure is now, and I cannot wait to do it again. Thank you so much for looking.

It was just a month ago I was in the desert in spring. The wildflowers were blooming and the galactic core was rising in the February sky just before dawn. It now seems so long ago......

On this morning in the desert I was up by a rocky ridge seeking shelter from the wind and photographing the galactic core as it rose over the strangely shaped rocks.

This a a 4 shot panorama with my Sony 55mm f/1.8 lens on my Sony A7S and a Gitzo 1541 tripod. The small camera and lens work great with the small one series tripod, even in the wind.

“Magic Happened” I made my why back to Mt Rainier for a quick 2-nighter to see if any new flower fields had popped up since I was there teaching a couple of weeks ago. I am so glad I did. I got to experience one of those once in a lifetime sunsets that exploded across the sky. The fire in the sky was super intense and seemed to go on and on forever. These are the nights that make me remember why I wanted to be a professional landscape photographer all those years ago. Even though I am out in the field almost a 150 days a year, sunsets like this one are just so rare. It’s been a long time since I have been so jacked up after a photo shoot. In my next post, I will post all the different compositions I was able to capture during this magic event, but for now I have to let this one stand alone, as this will be my newest gallery shot, and it will be in both the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds Washington, and soon it will be in my Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon. And as always, All-in-Camera. Thank you so much for looking!

“It almost Blew Up!”

Just returned from a weekend working in my Images of the West gallery in Cannon Beach. Now I am back for a few days in the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds. Just enough time to get all my orders out and get both galleries caught up before I head out for 13 days to teach my Big Adventure in Bryce Canyon (Sold Out). After my shift in the Images of the West Gallery, I hit the beach, put in 8 miles, and on the way back, I stopped for sunset. It rained off and on off the entire hike, but somehow, someway, the sun popped out and gave me a very nice stormy sunset, and this thing almost totally blew up into a full on light show. But Mother Nature kept it subdued, knocking it out at the very last moment. I still really enjoy the stormy look of these images, which really represents how hiking the beach felt. Thank you so much for looking.

After driving for almost 13 hours on my first day (It’s a 19 hour drive from my house to Death Valley) I arrived at my first nights camp 30 minutes before sunset. I put Gracie the Cabin up on her ramps, grabbed my camera gear and started speed hiking. I got to this spot just and the sun started to set and nailed a series of amazing images and Put them in the Bank! This one ended up being my favorite. I am booking next year’s Big adventure in Death Valley now, Feb 21-26 2022. $995 per student with a $500 deposit. “Put that in the Bank”

Headed out to the north Cascades on Monday Night to film a new episode of “Out in the Field with Randall J Hodges” My little video series that captures me out in the field doing what I do. We had blue bird sky conditions, but a strong alpenglow saved the night with the final shot “Pow! Nailed That! That’s in the Bank!” It was such a beautiful afternoon with warm temps and beautiful fall color. It was also a “2 bear day”, as we saw two bears on the hike up. After sunset we sat in our chairs and sipped a mountain cocktail on the ridge in the beautiful moon light. I really does not get any better than that! Then we enjoyed a peaceful night hike out. It will probably take a couple of weeks to get the new episode edited, and I will put a link up as soon as it’s ready. Thank you so much for looking!

Anyone else remember this classic TV show? 📺

Exploring the local buildings at Pripyat ghost town. I found this long abandoned electronics store, which used to sell TV sets. It is possible to make some really interesting compositions in this place. Or find a really good second hand TV if you don't mind the only show going on involving a guy in a gas mask. 😁

What’s in my camera bag

Here is the light version of my camera bag, optimized for a full day of shooting with everything I need.

Camera bag is from @onabags It’s made in a beautiful, sturdy and nice to the touch. The model is called Bowery, and I have the black version. However, I don’t think this kind of black on the catalog anymore.

I added a small red pin, which came as extra with a @deadcameras strap. Cameras are all from @leica_camera on this shot, but I use all kind of cameras.

This mix is my all time favorite, though. There is a #LeicaM2 equipped with a Leica 50mm Summicron f/2. Also, my all time favorite camera the #LeicaQ (I’m a sucker. #LeicaQ2 is all I’m thinking about). Of course, the fixed lens is the wonderful 28mm Summilux f/1.7. Finally, my compact camera is a #LeicaMinilux with the amazing 40mm Summicron f/2 lens. Film rolls I carry can vary, but I like to experiment. There is a film roll of @ilfordphoto Delta 100 and Delta 400 (I also like HP5+). I’m trying out the reborn @kodakplus Ektachrome 100 for slides and keep close a film roll of Kodak TMax 3200

Mini tripod by @gitzoinspires is expensive, but it can hold a Leica M in any position, despite the off centered tripod hole.

The tiny notebook by @porschedesignofficial was a gift in the Berlin store when I bought my favorite leather jacket. Pen is a Space Pen, which never leaks, is tiny and looks very cool. I also bring a Sharpie to write info on film rolls. Microfiber cloth is special for cameras, but don’t remember the brand. @bangolufsen small pouch is for speakers, but I use it to store rolls of film. @zeisscameralenses lens wipes are made in photographers heaven. They just work! Finally, I also carry a WhiBal grey card, a small multitools and a shutter release cable.

The iconic mountain in Iceland as seen on an early fall morning. I was in Iceland last September on a solo camping/photography trip. I spent three nights near here exploring the region and managed to catch both the aurora and some nice sunrose light here at Kirkjufell. I wonderful (although crowded) location.

Here is a view down by some tidal ponds for something I hope is a little different take on this location.

Getting to know the local education system at Pripyat ghost town. Some of the school books and notes are still laying on the desks the way they were left 35 years ago.

“Back from Banff”

I am back from Banff and in the gallery in Edmonds for a quick catch up and turn around before I head back out in the field to teach my Big Adventure in the Grand Tetons Class. What an amazing time I had in Banff and Yoho National Parks teaching another fantastic group of students. Even though the weather was not good when I left, Mother Nature treated us well and we had a few fantastic times of light. In this first post, this is actually my last morning in Banff at Lake Louise. I had already cut the class loose the day before but I wanted to catch one more sunrise before heading home. I am so glad I did as the light was amazing! Here is a four image series showing the progression of sunrise from blue hour into morning light. POW! Nailed it! That’s in the Bank! What a finish to a fantastic trip. Even though I said this class would be a one-0time only, I have had quite a few requests that I do it again. If you are interested and would like to be on the notification list, please PM me or send me an email to randall@randalljhodges.com. If there is enough interest, I will do it again next year, why not! Much more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!
