Dolls made of paper, table tennis balls, etc.
These dolls are called Ohina-sama and used for the Girls' Festival on March 3 every year.

Hina Matsuri, commonly known as Girls' Day, is celebrated every March 3 in Japan. Traditionally attired dolls, representing the emperor and empress and court musicians and attendants are displayed in honor of the holiday. It is a tradition that goes back to the Heian period (794 to 1185).
Today (March 3rd) is Hina Matsuri. I'd wanted to make this pop up card from the book Paper: Fold It for part of an installation at uni.
I finished it last night, completely unaware that I was in time for the actual day. lmao. I am an organised scatterbrain.

"Nagashi-bina" is an event which is said to be the origin of the Dolls' Festival. Paper hina dolls are set afloat on a river to get rid of girls' bad spirits and troubles.

These elaborate dolls belong to a friend of mine. I managed to take a few photos while they were still on display.
