Trevor the Mandarin Duck is not native to Canada but has been a regular at Burnaby Lake for a few years now, posed here with his girlfriend (as he is the only Mandarin here he keeps company with a lady Wood Duck). The Mandarin Duck is closely related to the North American wood duck, the only other member of the genus Aix.

Week 21 in 52 Weeks for Dogs. Finally I was able to meet up with some friends for a picnic and to reunite Tasku with her 'grand amour'. These two have been besotted with each other from the first moment they met, time apart makes no difference to their relationship, they always greet each other with great affection.
6 year old female Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abeli) named "Aisha" on left and ~ 1 year old female siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) named "Selamet" (aka "Sela") on right live with their families in a mixed-species exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.
The two little girls, though of different species and sizes, have become unlikely girlfriends.

Last month I had a Flickrmail from a young Californian man called James. He told me that his girlfriend Emmi was studying in Ireland and he was about to travel over to Ireland to meet up with her on St. Patrick's Day. James said that he was planning to propose to Emmi during his visit and wanted my advise on a nice quiet and scenic coastal location in Dublin for the proposal. Wow, talk about putting me under pressure, LOL! After a little thought I suggested the above elevated location in a large parkland at Killiney Hill and gave him detailed directions.
I didn't think I would hear from James again. However earlier this week I got another Flickrmail from a very happy James. He told me that the proposal went very well on Killiney Hill and that they both loved the location! So I'm sure you will all join me in congratulating James and Emmi on their Irish engagement.
I took the above shot a few days ago as a little tribute to the happy couple while I was up for a regular walk on Killiney Hill. The inserts are photos from James and Emmi which they took themselves on Killiney Hill just after the successful proposal. Yes I know the blended image is probably a bit mushy and sentimental...but I'm an incurable romantic, LOL!

Hello everyone! Today, November 24, my parents treated me with a trip to go
Saw-Whet Owl Banding for my 17th birthday, which is on November 29. My sister, brother and his girlfriend went also. It was fantastic! We had so much fun! We arrived at Hidden Valley right after dusk. (FYI-This was the last banding day for the season.) My father and I trekked up the mountain to go and help Scott Weidensaul and two other helpers (Phil and Connie) put up the mist nets.
After that was done, it was waiting time. After about 45 mintues, we went for the first check. To my amazment, there was 1 saw-whet owl in the nets. I was so excited. We went back down the the banding station and watched it get banded. It was very exciting and fun to see this. After watching this and taking photos of it (to make a long story short, it got one wing in my mouth), we let it settle and then released it back into the wild. My parents actually "adopted" the owl for me as a birthday present. It was a female hatched year bird. We named it Buho (owl in Spanish).
About 10 minutes later, my brother, his girlfriend, and I went to the net site.
We were shocked that there was 2 more owls in them. While getting one of them out of the net, another flew in about 5 feet away from me and Scott. Upon banding them in the station, we found out that the one was the same one from before, but the other 2 were different. One was 3 years old and the other was a hatched year bird. They were all females.
