In questi monti morirono circa 20.000 soldati.

Venezia | Venedig | Venice
Five minutes after arriving on the main island of Venice I thought I was lost. In fact, I wondered if I'd find my way anywhere much less back to the hotel. The myriad of bridges over canals, the narrow alleys twisted, turned and led me around far too many corners then confused my sense of direction. I kept walking and picking out landmarks though there was no guarantee I'd return the same way.
Eventually, I arrived at St Mark's Square and this is when my heart melted. I fell in love. My love affair with Venice continues today and I've visited countless times. I still get turned around every so often though my heart doesn't race like that first time. Moving forward always lands me at or near the place I want to be.
My Best Suggestions To Discover The Magic of Venice ::
:: Take a water taxi from the airport to your hotel in Venice.
:: Take a vaporetto to San Giorgio then look back at the main island of Venice in awe.
:: Let out a deep sigh when you see the Bridge of Sighs
:: You'll think you're lost, but you're never lost in Venice. Toss your map and explore.
:: Be a tourist and go to the top of the Campanile in St Mark's Square. The view will astound you. If you're lucky you'll hear the bells of the Campanile up close and personal. They are gloriously loud.

Well … in my last picture I mentioned that I made some selfies while I was waiting for the sunset! And here it is … yes, that’s me with our dog he he he :-) This shot was made in the area of my last post above the tree line. It was anything but easy. Although it does not look like … I had to make 6 times this photo here. And 6 times, I had to find a new place to try it again, because the snow surface always broke up and I found myself till my hips in the snow (lol). Well, the reason was that I made this shot without my snowshoes because I had to run to position me in front of my lenses with the dog … and hey, try to run with snowshoes and a dog next to you!!! Therefore I put away the snowshoes and tried to run as soft as possible without destroying the surface of the snow but still enough quick to reach the appropriate place in front of the cam before the „bib bib bib“ of the cam finished! This was really suffering a martyrdom. And the other reason was my dog. He loves lenses. The first try finished pitifully while I was running and calling „Come … come Giorgio“ but he was licking the lens. Well, the bib finished and the shot should have showed one man in the snow till to his hips and a dog in front of the cam … but as he was licking the lens the shot was only black he he he. But finally after one hour I could make this shot here and I hope you like my selfie … well I think it’s my second one ;-)
Thank you for your time and interest in my photos, your visit is most appreciated :-)

took this in summer last year - just digged it out of my archive. Want to break the winter-series a little.
It reminds me very strong to the work of the painter Giorgio de Chirico - so I would dedicate it as an hommage to him.

Early morning view from San Giorgio towards St marks. Taken this April I have tried to keep it as simple as possible and to get as much balance in the processing as I could.
Italy, Veneto, Venice, Spring 2024
Venice is a city in northeastern Italy, located in the shallow Venetian Lagoon. It is situated across a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by about 400 bridges. Venice is renowned for the beauty, architecture and artwork and it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Grand Canal (Canal Grande) is one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. The gondola is a traditional rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. It is similar to a canoe and it is propelled by a gondolier, who uses a rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, in a sculling manner and acts as the rudder. For centuries, the gondola was "The Chief" means of transportation within Venice. San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the islands of Venice. The island, or more specifically its Palladian church, is an important landmark. It has been much painted, featuring for example in a series by Monet.
San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th-century Benedictine church on the island of the same name in Venice, northern Italy, designed by Andrea Palladio, and built between 1566 and 1610.
