This photograph of Heathcote on Holy Island sands with sea birds flying overhead is another example of a combination print. Although not immediately obvious, it is perhaps a better illustration of how two or even three negatives might be used to create one photograph. Not only does the picture have a cloud laden sky, the birds look slightly out of scale and not quite in harmony with the rest of the view. The birds come from another negative; if you look closely just below the horizon in the centre of the photograph, there is a ghost outline of a bird, where MacLeod has printed a little too far below the skyline. (NRO 00876/213)
The technique of combination printing was introduced during the 1850s, one of the most famous advocates for multiple negatives being the British photographer Henry Peach Robinson, who used anything from two to nine negatives to print a single photograph.
Follow this link for a short biography of Peach Robinson and some examples of his combination prints:

As I was driving past this building, I espied on it's side an outline to where a house once stood. Being that it was not a safe place for me to get out of the car, I had to nonchalantly grab a shot with my camera from the lower part of my window. Looking around, i thought it was best to have a shot with my car mirror than no shot at all.
paintstick drawing near my house - note the almost invisible pasteup of a car below it - also there is a ghost outline of where I pasted some eyes about a year ago above it: www.flickr.com/photos/markuza/2691938665/in/set-721576022...

That faint ghost outline
is ghost of me, playing harmonica.
Not as good obviously as
the piano one, (which kicks ass).
The courtyard in front of you is actually the remains of the Machine Shop. Note its walls and foundations that supported various machines. Can you find the “ghost” outline on the wall inside the doorway marking where the stairs once were?
The Central of Georgia railroad built this shop between 1851-1855. A second story (A) was added in 1876. Machinists working here milled metal by threading pipes and bolts, drilling holes, and planing items to various sizes. The machinists also finished iron objects made in the Blacksmith Shop and repaired items such train wheels. The wheel lathe, drill press, smaller lathes, and metal planers were powered by the line shaft from the Boiler Room. The curved wall (B) by the front of the Machine Shop marks the edge of the original 1850s Roundhouse.
