The Church of the Gesù was based on the Church of the Gesù in Rome. Construction began in 1864, and the church opened on July 10, 1865. The Gesù witnessed the first "electric candle " lit in Canada in 1878.
The Gesù in Montreal is a not an exact replica of the Gesù in Rome. It is nevertheless a large church of about 4,400 square metres (47,000 sq ft) with a vault height of 22.9 metres (75 ft) above ground level. This is the only entirely baroque-style church in Montreal. The church was to be topped by two bell towers on either side of the entrance. The bases were constructed, although the towers were never completed for financial reasons. A large part of the funds raised for construction of the church were used instead to support the Collège Sainte-Marie.
The vault of the Gesù consists of five arches. It is adorned with frescoes by American painter Daniel Muller, who replicated work from the German school of Düsseldorf, depicting the life of Jesus. In this church, there is a statue of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, brought from France in 1877, which contains the ashes of the original statue burned during the French Revolution.
The basement of the Gesù was converted into an auditorium and is one of the oldest cultural centers in Montreal. It has played an important role in Montreal's cultural life, welcoming both local and foreign actors, including the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent, under the direction of Father Émile Legault, and the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. La Concattedrale di S.Andrea Apostolo è la più grande chiesa di Mantova. Opera di Leon Battista Albertii, architetto rinascimentale, ha il privilegio di custodire, nella omonima Basilica Albertiana,
I Sacri Vasi contenenti il sangue di Cristo.
La tradizione attribuisce al soldato romano Longino, che trafìsse con la propria lancia il costato di Cristo, la raccolta ed il trasporto di terra imbevuta del sangue di Gesù nel luogo ove ora sorge la città di Mantova.
I Sacri Vasi sono custoditi nella cripta della Basilica e di norma vengono estratti ed esposti al pubblico il Venerdi Santo di ogni anno.

Nel suo barocco genovese sfarzoso di ori, stucchi e marmi policromi....
Ala laterale verso l'uscita.
Non mi attira il barocco, ma quando passo di qui ( vicino a Piazza de Ferrari ), ci passo sempre. Forse per il suo nome... forse per un grande quadro col cuore di Gesù.

El constructor de esta iglesia, en su tercera etapa, fue como se tiene registrado, el Hermano MartÃn de Alzpitiarte S. J. que se basó en la Chiesa del Sacro Nome di Gesù, de Roma, casa que alberga a la CompañÃa de Jesús, modelo de las iglesias jesuÃticas del resto del mundo, el primer templo barroco que se conoce.
La elevación que se muestra es la cúpula que descansa sobre arcos y remata en una linterna exterior, que forma parte del cimborrio de San Pedro, maravillosamente decorado y con las palabras de Jesús a Pedro: Tu eres Pedro y sobre esa piedra construiré mi iglesia (Mateo 16: 12-20) que se lee en latÃn sobre el anillo base de este cimborrio, elemento arquitectónico que resulta ser la torre que emerge del techo para recibir del exterior ventilación y luz naturales.
