I counted 12 churches in Gerace when I visited which is a lot for a village of just over 2400 residents, I have even heard comparisons that Gerace is the “Southern Florence” in at least church density, over time there have been 120+ churches here. This shot is of Chiesa di San Martino the church of the Borghetto the middle area of Gerace that runs along via Roma to pass through the Porta del Borghetto and what used to be the Porta del Ponte. The Church itself is originally from a Byzantine construction design but had to be rebuilt due to the 1783 earthquake this time with an updated Baroque-Neoclassical that was in fashion at the time.

Gerace, Calabria. Italia. Unione Europea.

For me this will always be my favorite shot of Gerace some might say I was lucky to catch it and you would be right if you call luck pouring over maps, shot locations, as well as sun tracking apps to arrange a multi km route so that I ended up right at Porta del Sole when the sun rose. One tool that I use consistently is the Photographers Ephemeris with this tool I can drop a pin on a map and see what direction the light of the sun or moon will take at any given time even far into the future when you will be visiting a place. All my preplanning might seem excessive but I find if you put in the front end work then you can relax enjoying the trip following your plan loosely knowing the old adage “ God laughs while men plan” is true and roll with the punches when needed.

Like all old coastal hill towns in Italy the distance of the town away from the sea and the height of the hill they occupy was usually directly proportional to the amount of pirate raiders that practiced their trade in the waters of the coastline. The people of Gerace are thought to have been a group of survivors of a Saracen raid on Locri that badly damaged the town, according to legend the people followed a sparrow-hawk until it led them to Gerace’s current site with the town name coming from the Greek word jerax for “sparrow-hawk”. This shot is not taken from Gerace’s scenic panorama Le Bombarde but a few levels down on Via Santa Lucia allowing me to capture the sunrise over the roofs of the lower town.

This is the Porta del Sole called this because it is the east facing entrance to the Centro Storico, when the sun rises from the sea the first rays as it climbs to the level of town become visible through this gate a sight that should be at least once during your visit. To say Gerace has a great view is an understatement the old town sits on top of a 500m promontory facing the Ionian sea, the town itself dates to around 900 AD the fossil record of the rock it sits on to about 60 million years ago. Gerace is formed of three towns the old town on the top where we stayed which contains most of the tourist attractions, the Borghetto middle section and the lowest section Borgo Maggiore which houses artisan workshops dug into the tuffa stone as well as newer residential units.

Things in the very early morning look entirely different than they do during the day, much is dependent on how the lighting casts its shadows or illuminates the depths of a subject and a lot is in how you choose to capture it. Being mostly a travel photographer you have to make the best of any shooting situation because most likely you will not get another chance to retake any shots especially on my itineraries where I greedily want to see everything possible in a region. Just try to keep in the back of your mind when walking about in the daylight shot locations for later of a scene you might never take during the day but might be a real winner in the night light like this one or at least IMHO.

With this last look at Scilla we say goodbye for now, this shot taken from the end of the Marina Grande as the sunrise casts its glow across Castle Ruffo and warms up the shore for the next visitors looking to enjoy some late season beach time. For me this may be my favorite spot on the lower half of the Tyrrhenian seaside of Calabria due to its unique combination of beach and town ,that is saying a lot given the other spots we have seen from Pizzo to this place as we explored this portion of the coast Now we move our focus from the Tyrrhenian seaside to the mountains, always keeping our right side to the coastline and the beaches of the Ionian starting our mountainous visit with the medieval village of Gerace.

Gerace is almost a one road town with the SP1 depositing you either at the highest point of the town or in its lowest point in the Borgo Maggiore area whichever direction you want to explore town from just remember what goes up must come down. My strategy when visiting any hill town is to try to tackle the uphill bit right off the bat while I still have lots of energy or I alternatively try to arrange walking paths that serpentine parallel to the up and down contours of the hillside. This shot is taken from inside the residential area of the Borgo Maggiore capturing one of the panoramic viewing platforms of Gerace and hammers home the fact that a 500m high plateau is what the town sits on.

After a pretty rough start to the day for my partner she was up for a stroll around town, apparently arriving in Gerace was what was required to make her feel a little better or it could have been the excellent bottle of “Terre di Gerace” we shared while we waited for our host to meet us. Our B&B stay was picture-perfect, and called La Casetta “The Little House”, the accommodation was located on the Duomo square with a reserved parking space but this beautiful split level is not for the mobility challenged due to a steep inside staircase. I try to find the best lodgings in each town that allow us to be in the middle of the area we visit but also walk to our chosen supper location in the evening and whenever possible I look for a place that has parking or close access to it.

One tip that I can offer for taking photos and this goes for any type of photograph you are taking, is to capture the scene you had in your mind but then immediately start walking around your subject looking for other views of it maybe capturing something better in the process. This shot is of the bell tower of Chiesa di San Martino off of Via Marco Polo reinforces this photo tip I mention, as much as I liked the previous shot on the main street this side street lighting really spoke to me best. Around the church is a cobblestone square that I have heard called “al pracùsu” this side hill Borghetto area would be the among the first of the “suburbs” of Gerace and needed for residents most likely due to the density of churches taking up real-estate on the semi-flat plateau area of the old town.

"Ideali amate voci

di coloro che sono morti o come i morti

sono per noi perduti.

A volte ci parlano in sogno

a volte esse vibrano dentro.

E con il suono, per un istante l'eco fa ritorno

della prima poesia di nostra vita –

come lontana nella notte una musica che dilegua".

With this last shot of Gerace from the top of Via Duomo we see what this town is most famous for the Santa Maria Assunta di Gerace one of the largest Norman cathedrals in Calabria and we say goodbye for now as we spend an Ionian beach day in Roccella Ionica. Gerace for me has been an amateur photographers dream and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to pursue their hobby but as always you need to capture the golden hours so don’t just make this a day trip if you have the option. For those that are more interested in looking at pictures than taking them Gerace has many qualities to keep you occupied including great history, architecture, food, wine, friendly people and a place that will leave a lasting impression.

What goes down must go back up especially if that is where your accommodations are one of the pitfalls of the early morning walkabout is that there are usually no bars open yet to get a café so you had better be naturally caffeinated or thinking ahead. I tend to think ahead especially when it comes to my coffee so bring your travel mug with you and your favorite instant coffee (yuk) for the mornings you are up before the barista as most accommodations will have a tea kettle but little gear for coffee. Most of the Calabrian area seems to be in the blue zones for longevity a lot can be attributed to the Mediterranean diet but I think it’s the exercise that residents get just going about life from top to bottom of the village that really promotes health.

After a lovely meal followed by some serious sleep I awoke around 5am to gather my gear and head out to wander around Gerace and see its beauty in the silence of the morning . One place that should not be missed in any Gerace visit is the Bar Cattedrale conveniently attached to Cattedrale Santa Maria Assunta XI secolo and it is home of some of the best granitas in Calabria. This excellent bar not only introduced me to my first granita but also to my first taste of bergamot with a filled brioche and a granita I still think about to this day.
