san miniato, with one of the best unspoiled views in florence, was built in 1018 over the christian martyr st. minias. the facade is designed in the romanesque style with a geometric design of green, gray and white marble, and a statue on the gable of an eagle carrying cloth symbolizes the arte di calimala [wool guild] who financed the church.

Sometimes it pays to look upwards.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, Mitla was once an important Zapotec religious and ceremonial center. It is most noted for the reoccurrence of 14 geometric designs that are represented in the stone carvings throughout the complex.
