Walking around this building, I was immediately drawn to how this sharp angle cut into the darkness. I decided to frame just this edge, removing all context to create something more abstract than a typical building photo. The black and white conversion helps emphasize the texture of the surface against the dark background.
I love finding moments where architecture becomes pure shape and form. This dramatic edge seemed to have movement and energy that caught my eye. The contrast between the lit surface with its distinct pattern and the dark void creates a simple but powerful composition.
The light hitting the textured surface creates an interesting pattern while the underside falls into shadow, adding depth to what could otherwise be a flat image. I wanted to show how even everyday buildings can become something striking when viewed from the right angle and with the right light. Sometimes the most compelling images come from the simplest elements – in this case, just a line cutting through space.
This is the view inside of Pilgrim Monument on Cape Cod, or as some say, the challenge of lots and lots of stairs to climb! This 252-foot tall monument was completed in 1910. I loved the geometric patterns the stairs provided of boxes within boxes. Enjoy!
