The Lookout Trail, between the South Lookout and North Lookout, at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary provides overlooks where you can see the countryside and interesting features. The bare patches on the mountainside are called the River of Rocks. They are a geological feature from the Ice Age where boulders form a stream and plants are unable to grow. There is no explanation for how the feature was formed, though there are a number of theories. Luis Bonillia says it was aliens.

The cliffrose (purshia stansburiana) was in full flower at the time of my visit. It is also often known as the bitter-bush or quinine-bush, due to the bitter taste of its leaves.
