El retrete de Dorian Gray - a series on street theatre by two fantastic artists from Barcelona. An 'older' series taken at the street theatre festival during the Gentse Feesten 2017

I captured this shot near Sint-Jacobs during an afternoon walk at the Gentse Feesten. The man looked like he needed a break—perhaps after a long night or during a pause between events. Sitting with his umbrella on his lap and his head tilted back, he seemed caught between resting and dozing off. These small, quiet moments are also part of the festival—not only the music and crowds but everything in between. They all contribute to the overall atmosphere.
During the Gentse Feesten, AA Gent has a special moment when they take to the stage between the Belfry and Saint Bavo's to unveil the next season's team. However, it's not just about tactics or transfers. Instead, it's a sea of blue and white, with oversized beers and dance moves that wouldn't make it onto the pitch. The club is fortunate that these fans remain in the stands, because after a few pints, even walking straight became difficult. Nevertheless, it's part of the charm: football, beer, and chaos at the heart of historic Ghent.

Normally every summer the city goes wild for 10 days. Ghent Festivities is a sparkling cultural festival with numerous performances of various national and international artists: a unique event in Europe, thanks to a variety of performances, exhibitions, fairs, parades and so much more. 2020 will be the first time since the World War 1 that Ghent Festivities will not take place. One of my favourite pictures from an all too brief afternoon taking street photos in Ghent, Belgium.
This was taken from about 100 metres away on a Nikon D800, using a Sigma 150-500 lens.
This is a picture of Friday Market Square (Vrijdagmarkt) in Ghent during the 2024 Ghent Festivities (Gentse Feesten). The Vrijdagmarkt is one of the city’s oldest squares, known for its lively atmosphere and historical significance. It has been a central meeting point for markets and events for centuries. The 2024 Ghent Festivities attracted over 1.7 million visitors, making it one of the most successful editions to date. The festival featured a wide range of performances, street art, and cultural events. Taken from the Bond Moyson building, this photo offers a beautiful view of the towers of Saint James’ Church (Sint-Jacobs), which is at the heart of the Ghent Festivities and a central location for much of the festival’s excitement - Ghent, Belgium

The security council’s ban on mass events till 31 August means that all the big summer events will be cancelled. In Ghent too many are heartbroken, It is the first time since World War I that the Ghent Festivities will not take place. The Festival of Ghent is without doubt the biggest and best-known street festival in Europe, attracting around 2 million visitors each year. “The Ghent Festivities are part of the city’s DNA. The cancellation of course hurts, but we are resilient. In 2021 we plan to party twice as hard” said Mathias De Clercq, the city’s mayor. Here are some memories of the sparkling “Gentse Feesten” from 2014. On display are people enjoying a performance of late Walter De Buck. It was one of his last public appearances before he passed away later that year. Walter De Buck was a singer, sculptor and founder of the modern “Gentse Feesten” – Sint-Jacobsplein, Ghent, Belgium.

This photo is taken in Ghent today. A big party event is going on there this week. The atmosphere is great! Ghent is a very nice historic city. We were going tomorrow initially, but since we were driving nearby, we thought wy not go now? We had Belgium (french) fries for supper. And just strolled a bit.
This picture is taken in the "graffity street" very nice to walk through! More shots of that area are coming soon. I promise it's worth it... View Large On Black
