The Sanctuary of Santa Maria infra Saxa and the so-called Tempio di Valadier are two sanctuaries and chapel located at the entrance of the Frasassi Caves, a remarkable karst cave system in the municipality of Genga, in the province of Ancona, Marche, Italy.
So-called Tempio di Valadier
The sanctuary and chapel are located within a few dozen meters of each other, on a ledge entrance to the Frasassi cave system. The sanctuary is ancient; it is cited in documents from 1029. It is a simple stone structure built by Benedictine monks to house a burned image of the Madonna.
A Tempietto or small octagonal temple on the site was first proposed in 1817 by the future Pope Leo XII, who was originally from Genga. The white travertine structure, completed in 1827 after Leo had become pope, was long thought to have been designed by Giuseppe Valadier, and is still widely referred to as the "Tempio di Valadier". However, in 2016 a study of previously unexamined archives by Maria Cristina Cavola revealed that Valadier had absolutely nothing to do with the building: it was rather an accretive design to which a series of local architects and project managers made successive contributions. The chapel once housed a marble statue of the Madonna and child by the studio of Antonio Canova. The statue is now in the civic museum of Genga, and been substituted by a copy. When the Tempietto was built, a number of remains of skeletons were found in the opening of the cave.
Uno dei punti a mio avviso piu interessanti della Roma - Ancona. Ci troviamo a pochi passi da Genga dove la ferrovia è stretta tra il fiume Esino e la ripida parete rocciosa che si erge quasi verticale. La zona è soggetta a caduta massi e a protezione della linea è presente una rete paravalanghe visibile alle spalle del convoglio. In foto vediamo le E401.023 in spinta ad un Intercity proveniente da Roma Termini metre attraversa lo stretto canyon della gola della rossa in direzione Ancona.

Tempio del Valadier. E' un edificio a pianta ottagonale voluto da papa Leone XII (nato nel vicino paesino di Genga). Fu edificato nel 1828 dall'architetto Valadier dal quale prende il nome. La sua caratteristica è il fatto di essere completamente inserito in una grotta. E' situato poco distante dalle grotte di Frasassi e per arrivarvi bisogna percorrere una stradina lunga 700 m. abbastanza ripida.

La chiesa di San Vittore alle Chiuse è un edificio romanico che si trova a San Vittore Terme nel comune di Genga (Ancona), in posizione isolata non lontana dalla gola e dalle grotte di Frasassi.
Sorta come chiesa conventuale benedettina di un complesso monastico documentato fin dal 1007, la sua edificazione dovrebbe risalire al periodo 1060-1080. Si tratta di una delle più importanti ed antiche testimonianze dell'architettura romanica nelle Marche e nonostante pesanti restauri novecenteschi mostra ancora l'articolazione volumetrica originale.

The church of San Vittore alle Chiuse is a Romanesque building which is located in San Vittore Terme in Genga (Marche region, Italy), in a secluded location not far from the throat and the Frasassi caves.
Built like Benedictine convent church of a monastic complex documented since 1007, its construction probably dates back to the period 1060-1080. It is one of the most important and oldest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Marche region and despite heavy twentieth-century restoration still shows the original volumetric articulation.
E questa era la meta della vacanza. Dentro le Grotte non sapevo più dove girarmi per fotografare, uno spettacolo continuo.
Fuori pioveva ma quì eravamo sotto terra quindi all'asciutto.

And this was the holiday goal. Inside the Caves I didnt know where to look to take photos, a continuous spectacular.
Outside was raining but inside we were under the earth so in dry place.
Umidity and 14 degrees inside, everybody dressed with suitable clothing.
The spectacular cave system in the Apennines was only discovered in 1971. The colossal system covers over 30km.

An elegant octagonal church rises among the pointed and beveled rocks of a gorge between the mountains:
it is the Temple of Valadier, in Genga, Marche (Italy).
The visual contrast is outstanding: the neoclassic architecture in travertine designed by Giuseppe Valadier (Rome, 1762-1839) – with the luminous symmetry of its eight sides symbolizing the Resurrection of Jesus, which occurred “on the eighth day” – stands against the rough disarray of nature, near the magnificent Frasassi Caves dug in limestone by the Sentino river.
The local people very likely sought refuge in these hidden grottos around the 10th century, when tribes from today’s Hungary raided the area.
The temple was built in 1828 by pope Leone XII, born Annibale Sermattei della Genga, and once housed a statue of the Madonna and Child made in Antonio Canova’s workshop.

Le Grotte di Frasassi, un immenso complesso sotterraneo naturale, sono una vera meraviglia della natura. Sono costituite da diversi ambienti di grandissime dimensioni (chiamate “sale”), dove le protagoniste assolute sono migliaia di stalattiti e stalagmiti di grandi dimensioni e dalle strane forme, che si sono create in centinaia di migliaia di anni. Accanto a molti laghetti naturali. L’atmosfera nella quale vi immergerete è fiabesca, magica, del tutto surreale.
E già per questo le Grotte di Frasassi sono un vero e proprio regalo della natura. Ma la cosa stupefacente è la conformazione dell’ambiente interno, dove troneggiano gigantesche stalactiti e stalagmiti dalle forme più strane, insieme a piccole raccolte d’acqua che formano dei laghetti naturali.
E il tutto crea un’atmosfera davvero surreale, fiabesca, un mondo magico del quale è difficile immaginare la bellezza se non ci si immerge. Anche grazie alla suggestiva illuminazione, studiata per mettere in risalto questa bellezza.

The Frasassi Caves, an immense natural underground complex, are a true wonder of nature. They consist of several very large rooms (called "salt"), where the absolute protagonists are thousands of large stalactites and stalagmites with strange shapes, which have been created in hundreds of thousands of years. Next to many natural ponds. The atmosphere in which you will immerse yourself is fairytale, magical, completely surreal.
And for this reason the Frasassi Caves are a true gift of nature. But the amazing thing is the conformation of the internal environment, where gigantic stalactites and stalagmites with the strangest forms dominate, together with small collections of water that form natural ponds.

Il presepe vivente di Genga è per estensione il più grande al mondo, copre infatti una superficie di circa 30.000 metri quadri all’interno della Gola di Frasassi. Il presepe nasce nel 1981 da un’idea di alcuni gengarini e da allora gli "Amici del presepe" organizzano due rappresentazioni l’anno.
Il grande lavoro di allestimento è svolto con passione ed intelligenza dagli abitanti di Genga che mettono a disposizione tempo, capacità e competenza per far rivivere l’evento che ha cambiato la storia del mondo.
La manifestazione vede la partecipazione di circa 300 figuranti che sono impegnati a far rivivere le tradizioni che hanno sostenuto ed animato la vita quotidiana di questo territorio. Lungo il sentiero che porta alla Natività pastori, pescatori, contadini intenti al loro lavoro scandiscono la salita verso la contemplazione dell’evento che si celebra.
Una volta giunti alla grotta naturale del Santuario di Frasassi troviamo esperti artigiani: falegnami, fabbri, cestai, fornai, calzolai, scultori, vasai, ricamatrici e tessitrici tutti con gli antichi strumenti della loro arte.
Il presepe vivente di Genga, che in quasi trent'anni è stato visitato da più di 300.000 persone, si connota di una valenza solidaristica poiché devolve gli incassi in iniziative di beneficenza.
