Greenpeace activists installed a 'historical' marker in the International Rice Research (IRRI). Greenpeace is calling on the Philippine-based rice center to abandon the development of genetically- engineered (GE) rice varieties. IRRI is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the adoption of its bylaws today.

Greenpeace activists dressed as GMO "monster crops" accompanied by "mad scientists" storm the Department of Agriculture. Greenpeace together with other concerned organizations are demanding the Philippine government to "stop GMO invasion" by cancelling all commercialization and field trials of genetically-modified organisms in the country.
The Department of Agriculture, responsible for regulating GMOs, has never denied approval for any GMO crop. Greenpeace contends that GMOs are dangerous to human health, biodiversity and farmers’ livelihoods.

Greenpeace shook the opening of the first international trade exhibition on genetic-engineering (GE) in Bangkok today when Greenpeace volunteers dressed as farmers installed 60 mock genetically-engineered rice 'time bombs' at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center where the meet was being held. The volunteers also unfurled a banner reading "Don't bomb our future, Keep our rice GMO Free" as a warning that genetically-engineered rice and its corresponding environmental impacts, such as GE contamination, pose a serious threat to farmers' livelihoods, and Thailand's rice economy.

During photosynthesis in C3 crops, such as wheat and rice, the enzyme Rubisco will react with oxygen (instead of carbon dioxide) creating a plant-toxic compound that must be recycled, wasting energy. In this greenhouse experiment, four-week-old plants engineered to more efficiently process this toxic compound are visibly larger than unmodified plants.
