The unique feature of this wind generator are the 5 bladed aluminium propellors, three phase motors, star and delta configuration output, variable pitch propellors, low cost and 100% new zealand made. Capable of to output of 1.2 Kw at 2000 rpm.
When deciding what we were going to do on our trip, Benson expressed an interest in going to the Hoover Dam. I'd already been a few years earlier with Barney and Nick, but we hadn't done the tour, so it was worth going again.
(We actually seriously considered driving to the Grand Canyon since it wasn't too much farther, but figured that after all of the driving we'd be doing and the short time we had it wasn't worth going just to go. Boy, was I glad later that we made that decision.)
The tour was interesting, but awfully short. You basically see two different locations (these generators and one of the water tunnels) and get to look through an exhibit and an introductory video.
This was the first stop after the video--the generator room. I remember being fascinated in high school when I learned that the large majority of power generation involves using water to turn magnets--whether heating using nuclear, coal, gas, etc, or using gravity as in the case of the Hoover Dam.
Another interesting fact--the Hoover Dam's primary focus is on controlling water downstream, not on producing electricity. They view the generation of electricity as a byproduct.
