When deciding what we were going to do on our trip, Benson expressed an interest in going to the Hoover Dam. I'd already been a few years earlier with Barney and Nick, but we hadn't done the tour, so it was worth going again.
(We actually seriously considered driving to the Grand Canyon since it wasn't too much farther, but figured that after all of the driving we'd be doing and the short time we had it wasn't worth going just to go. Boy, was I glad later that we made that decision.)
The tour was interesting, but awfully short. You basically see two different locations (these generators and one of the water tunnels) and get to look through an exhibit and an introductory video.
This was the first stop after the video--the generator room. I remember being fascinated in high school when I learned that the large majority of power generation involves using water to turn magnets--whether heating using nuclear, coal, gas, etc, or using gravity as in the case of the Hoover Dam.
Another interesting fact--the Hoover Dam's primary focus is on controlling water downstream, not on producing electricity. They view the generation of electricity as a byproduct.

This drawing shows the arrangement of the rotating parts of a steam turbine generator train. This turbine is unusual because the condenser is an axial flow type, and the generator sits on the turbine's upstream side instead of its downstream side. Many important support systems are not shown which make up the "balance of plant" or BOP equipment.
In the right center, there are some power station workers. They put the massive generators into perspective.

Exhaust Snorkel & Generator Exhaust Stub
The generator exhaust is emitted from the muffler exhaust stub. The elbow should be fixed at the same height as the exhaust stub. In the field, I simply move the generator up to the elbow. There is no need to 'seal' the elbow to the exhaust stub of this style of generator -- the cooling fan also blows air out of the louvers and the combined exhaust and cooling air are transferred efficiently into the manifold.
The area was not connected to the grid for a couple of weeks. This generator was used to keep the electricity going while repairs were done.

Under the hood of meticulously-restored Doble E23. The large black object to the left of the steam generator is the turbine that drives the condenser fan.
When pressing the left side of the switch to prime the generator, you will hear the clicking sound of the electric fuel pump, pulling fuel from the gas tank. When the clicking stops or slows, the carb is fill and is ready to start.
At Marmari there were a few wind generators. Unfortunately I had no time to go closer although wanted it so much. Listening to the noise of their wings when they rotate and seeing the height of their tower make me feel dread!
Two diesel generators, one old, one new. The old one is being phased out completely. The new one will still be around as a backup for the hydro power, but the intention is to minimize its usage.
