Turbines inside wheels capture energy
Magne Generator has developed a process that utilizes turbines inside wheels to harnesses brake power and store the energy for on-board applications. When a vehicle using the Magne Generator technology is in motion or braking, the turbines store energy. They have adapted the process to work with 10 inch wheels, used in golf carts and other smaller vehicles, reducing need for maintenance on these vehicles, and they don't need to be recharged as often.
David, who has 30 years experience in the electric industry, initially started the company while looking at innovative ways to make wind turbines more efficient.
The future David hopes there will be a replacement for smaller, gas based vehicles. There are also a number of applications for Magne Generator, including use in military and emergency response vehichles.
Cleantech Open is providing them additional visibility mentoring to develop a business plan and the opportunity to win prizes and funding.
This must be a typical sight in and around Lagos and maybe the rest of Nigeria. During my visit, I noticed that power is generated locally (very locally - outside commercial buildings).
My driver told me that the newer generators (like this one) are much more effecient and quieter. At the office where I was working the generator outside was extremely noisy and could always be heard in the background.
Generator is a front hub motor from an electric bike, it is a 36v brushed motor with built in gearbox.
Bombed out building on the main market square in Kurmuk. Much of the town was destroyed by bombs during the civil war.
This wagon accompanies the Wasp personnel carrier. It transports the tools and if necessary a generator set to power Kango hammers, etc. It is in the works for a new deck and general refurbishment.

Some of the Hoover Dam's generators. Each year the dam produces an average of 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity for use in Arizona, Nevada and California (including Los Angeles.) By 1987 the sale of this electricity had paid for all construction and maintenance costs. (The dam cost $49 million in 1936 dollars - more than $800 million adjusted for inflation.)
