Promoting the German airline at Stansted Airport was one of those happy landings
Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG (stylized as airberlin or airberlin.com) is Germany's second largest airline, after Lufthansa, and Europe's sixth largest airline in terms of passengers.[2]
The airline operates an extensive semi-low-cost network including holiday destinations in the Mediterranean region, the Canary Islands and North Africa as well as intercontinental destinations in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and the United States.
Air Berlin concentrates on serving major German and European cities to attract business traffic. A total of 23 German cities are served, more than any other airline. Its largest hub is Berlin-Tegel Airport,[3] followed by Düsseldorf Airport. Other important destinations are the focus cities Nuremberg Airport and Son Sant Joan Airport, Palma.
On 26 July 2010, the Oneworld airline alliance announced that Air Berlin had been invited to join.[4] Full membership is planned for the start of 2012.
The airline is headquartered at the Airport Bureau Center in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin.[5] Air Berlin's parent company, airberlin group or Air Berlin PLC, is publicly traded (FSE: AB1, ISIN is GB00B128C026).[6]
In December 2010, it had 8,900 employees.[1] The airline (including subsidiaries) carried 33.6 million passengers in 2010.[7
]In 1978, former Pan Am pilot Kim Lundgren and former Modern Air Transport general manager John D. MacDonald formed Air Berlin as a US supplemental carrier and incorporated it under the name Air Berlin, Inc. in Oregon, USA, trading as Air Berlin USA and headquartered in Miami, Florida. This was due to West Berlin's special legal status during the Cold War era (8 May 1945 – 2 October 1990), which meant that all air traffic to and from the city was restricted to airlines of the three Western victorious powers of World War II, i.e. only those headquartered in the US, UK and France. In addition, all flightdeck crew (pilots, flight engineers and navigators) on these flights through the Allied air corridors had to be citizens of one of these states.[8]
Air Berlin's first revenue flight (from Berlin to Palma de Mallorca) took place on 28 April 1979, with its first aircraft being a Boeing 707–320, which had been acquired from TWA.[9] Operating from Berlin-Tegel Airport, the airline was assigned to fulfill lucrative charter contracts operating a series of short to medium-haul IT charter flights to the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands on behalf of Berliner Flug Ring, at that time West Berlin's leading package tour operator.[10] Air Berlin had taken over this contract from Aeroamerica, another US supplemental carrier, which was based at Berlin Tegel from 1974 to 1979.[10] Additionally, Air Berlin operated weekly scheduled service from Tegel via Brussels to Orlando, during a brief period in the early 1980s.[11]
In the spring of 1981, Air Berlin's original two Boeing 707 aircraft were replaced by the more modern Boeing 737–200 Adv type, which was more appropriate for the airline's IT operations from Berlin to the Mediterranean region, especially to Majorca (where it is now the largest airline operating there).[12]
In 1985, Air Berlin moved its headquarteres to Berlin.[13] Air Berlin transitioned to a fleet entirely composed of brand-new Boeing 737-300 and 737–400 aircraft during the late 1980s.[14] This coincided with the introduction of a new livery, which remained relatively unchanged until 2007.[14]
[edit] 1990–1999: Growth after German reunificationOn 2 October 1990, the eve of Germany's reunification (which led to the end of Berlin's special status), the airline was renamed Air Berlin, and German investors acquired a majority stake in the company with Joachim Hunold, a former LTU manager, becoming CEO, a position he still holds. Some time later, on 16 April 1991, the airline was re-registered under German law and renamed Air Berlin GmbH & Co. Luftverkehrs KG.[15][15][16] Air Berlin joined IATA, the company also moved away from charters and towards scheduled flights, including important European business centres (which had been served since 1997).
In January 2004, Air Berlin announced it would cooperate with Niki, a Vienna-based airline.[15] As part of the deal, Air Berlin took a 24% stake in Niki.
In 2005, a partnership agreement with Germania was signed. It saw Air Berlin leasing some of Germania's aircraft and crew, and Germania became almost exclusively a charter airline. Germania was to have been associated with Air Berlin under a management contract. However, the contract was not signed. At the beginning of March 2008 Germania’s joint owners could not reach agreement about the takeover by Air Berlin, so Germania remained an independent airline.
In 2006, Air Berlin successfully completed an initial public offering (IPO) on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Originally scheduled for 5 May 2006, it was postponed until 11 May 2006. The company cited recent rises in fuel costs and other market pressures leading to limited of investor demand and reduced the initial share-price range from 15.0–17.5 euros to 11.5–14.5 euros and the stock opened at €12.0, selling a total of 42.5 million shares. Of these, 19.6 million were new shares increasing capital in the company, and the remainder to repay loans extended by the original shareholders and invested in the company earlier in 2006. After the IPO, the company claimed to have over 400 million euros in cash to fund further expansion, including aircraft purchases.[17]
In August 2006, Air Berlin announced that it had acquired 100% of the shares in German domestic airline dba.[18] Flight operations at dba were continued as a fully owned subsidiary of Air Berlin until 14 November 2008, when the dba brand was discontinued due to staff strikes. (dba staff were subsequently offered positions with Air Berlin).
On 28 November 2006, aircraft manufacturer Boeing announced an Air Berlin order of 60 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, as well as for 15 aircraft of the smaller Boeing 737-700 variant. The combined value of these 75 airplanes would be 5.1 billion dollars at then list prices. Delivery started in 2007.[19] All of these aircraft will be equipped with blended winglets, which significantly improve fuel efficiency.
In March 2007, Air Berlin took over German leisure airline LTU, thereby gaining access to the long-haul market and becoming the fourth largest airline group in Europe in terms of passenger traffic. This deal lead to the introduction of Airbus A321 and Airbus A330 aircraft into the Air Berlin fleet. The merger of the LTU operations, aircraft and crew was completed on 1 May 2009, when the LTU brand was dicontinued.
On 7 July 2007, Air Berlin announced an order for 25 modern Boeing 787–8 Dreamliner longhaul aircraft, with further options and purchase rights.[20] Three additional aircraft of this type will be leased from ILFC. Entry into service is projected for 2011.
On 21 August 2007, Air Berlin acquired a 49 percent shareholding in Swiss charter airline Belair, the remainder being owned by tour operator Hotelplan.[21] Following the deal, Belair's longhaul business was shut down, and the fleet replaced by Airbus A320 family aircraft operating scheduled flights on behalf of Air Berlin as well as charter flights for Hotelplan.
On 20 September 2007, Air Berlin announced it intended to buy its direct competitor Condor in a deal that saw Condor's owner, the Thomas Cook Group, taking a 30% stake in Air Berlin.[22] A variety of considerations, including the rapidly increasing price of jet fuel, led to the abandonment of the deal in July 2008.
In January 2008 Air Berlin introduced a new logo together with a new corporate design. The logo is a white oval shape on a red background (to suggest an aircraft window) where the letter “a” is depicted by a white circle and two white stylised wings. The Air Berlin text element is now in lower case and written as one word. Sometimes the slogan “Your Airline” also features as part of the logo.[23]

In June 2008, CEO Joachim Hunold caused a quarrel with the Catalan People, when he claimed [25] in an article included in Air Berlin's inflight magazine that the government of the Balearic Islands was trying to impose the use of Catalan onboard of Air Berlin flights from and to Majorca. He claimed that Air Berlin was an international airline and therefore would not have to use Catalan. Hunold went on to criticise the language policy in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, claiming that at the time many children could not speak any Spanish.[26] The Balearic Islands' socialist President, Francesc Antich, explained that his government had simply sent a letter to encourage airlines operating in the Balearic Islands to include Catalan among the languages used for onboard announcements.[27] On 18 June of the same year, Air Berlin announced that it would reduce its long-haul services by 13 percent, as well as cut 10 percent of services on the domestic market in an effort to increase profitability.[28]
In January 2009 Air Berlin started a co-operation with Hainan Airlines, China’s fourth-largest airline. Both airlines offer jointly market flights between Berlin and Beijing. The code-share flights are sold on a reciprocal basis and operated under the relevant airline’s own flight number.[29]
At the end of March 2009, a strategic partnership agreement with TUI Travel was signed, which is based on a cross ownership of Air Berlin and its direct competitor TUIfly each purchases 9.9 percent of the other's shares.[30] Following this deal, Air Berlin took over all German domestic TUIfly routes, as well as those to Italy, Croatia and Austria. Also, all of Tuifly's Boeing 737-700 aircraft were merged into Air Berlin's fleet. Further route shifts will see TUIfly abandoning all scheduled flights and relying exclusively on the charter business.[31]
In March 2009 ESAS Holding bought approximately 15 per cent of the voting shares in Air Berlin PLC. The Federal Cartel Office in Bonn has notified Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG that it has no objections to the Turkish company ESAS Holding A.S. acquiring a stake in the airline.[32]
On 28 September 2009, Air Berlin announced it would cooperate with Pegasus Airlines, thus allowing its customers access to more destinations and flights to and within Turkey on a codeshare-like basis.[33]
In October 2009 Air Berlin entered into cooperation with Bangkok Airways. Air Berlin offers passengers the flights operated by Bangkok Airways under its own flight number.[34]

[edit] 2010-2011: Air Berlin to join OneworldIn April 2010 expanded its codeshare arrangements with Russia’s S7 Airlines. The strategic cooperation between Air Berlin and S7 Airlines has been in place since October 2008. New services include codeshare flights via Moscow to destinations such as Irkutsk, Perm and Rostov.[35]
In July 2010 Air Berlin PLC announced an increase in its shareholding in Niki. Following the fulfilment of the required conditions, the agreements notarized on 17 February 2010 have been implemented. Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG indirectly acquired 25.9% of the shares in Niki Luftfahrt GmbH form the Privatstiftung Lauda (private Lauda foundation) and has thereby increased its current shareholding in Niki Luftfahrt GmbH from 24% to 49.9%. In connection with the increase of its shareholding, Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG will grant the private Lauda foundation a 40.5 million-euro loan. The private foundation has the option to repay the loan in three years with cash or through the transfer to the remaining 50.1% of Niki Luftfahrt GmbH´s shares.[36]
In July 2010, it was also announced that Air Berlin would be joining the global airline alliance Oneworld.[37] Full membership is planned for the start of 2012.[38] In preparation for joining the alliance, Air Berlin has been offering flights under codeshare agreements with American Airlines and Finnair since its 2010/2011 winter schedule came into force. Its cooperation with American Airlines means that Air Berlin passengers gain access to the important American market whilst it also offers codeshare flights with Finnair to Helsinki and within Europe.[39]
Air Berlin PLC founded Follow Me Entertainment GmbH in September 2010 as a joint venture with kick-media ag. This joint venture company has been formed for the individual marketing of image and sound media, books, games as well as events, concerts, tournaments and sponsoring.[40]
The foundations were laid for the first maintenance hangar at Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI) on 21 March 2011. Air Berlin, which will use the hangar together with Germania as from June 2012, has thus doubled the maintenance capacity of Air Berlin Technik at its Berlin site.[41]
On 1 April 2011 Air Berlin completed the full integration of LTU which it took over in August 2007. There is now only one flight schedule and all the technical services of the Air Berlin Group have been merged into a new company "airberlin technik GmbH".[42] Also in April 2011 Air Berlin underlined the importance of its Düsseldorf hub by creating a new position of "Regional Director North-Rhine Westphalia". With new routes, more frequent flights and additional long-haul flights, Air Berlin is expanding the flights it offers from Düsseldorf.[43]

Jerry Faye Hall (born July 2, 1956) is an American model and actress, also known for her long-term relationship with Mick Jagger, with whom she had four children.
Early lifeHall was born in Gonzales, Texas, the daughter of Marjorie (née Sheffield) and John P. Hall, a truck-driver.[2]
She is of English descent.
Hall was raised in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, Texas, where she graduated from North Mesquite High School.
She also attended Kim Dawson Modeling Agency.
She has a twin sister, Terry, along with three older sisters; including actress Cyndy Hall.
Following a car accident, she used the insurance money she received to move to France
Top model
Hall was staying at a hostel on the French Riviera when she was discovered sunbathing on a Saint Tropez beach by a fashion agent, Claude Haddad.
She moved to Paris where she shared an apartment with singer Grace Jones (who at that time was also a model) and immersed herself in the Parisian nightlife, often performing risqué cabaret acts in clubs and parties with Jones.
Soon after, she moved in with fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez and her modelling career began.
In 1975 she appeared, in the guise of a mermaid, on the cover of Roxy Music's album Siren.
Five months later, lead singer Bryan Ferry gave her an engagement ring.[5]
Her relationship with Ferry continued and she also appeared in the video for his 1976 solo hit "Let's Stick Together".
By 1977, Hall had been on forty magazine covers including Italian Vogue and Cosmopolitan.
She was earning modelling fees in excess of $1000 per day.[5]
Her trademark long blonde hair and height of six feet quickly made her one of the most visible and photographed models in the industry during that period.
That same year, she met Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger at a dinner party in Manhattan, for whom she would eventually leave Bryan Ferry.
Hall and Jagger were seen together constantly around New York, frequenting trendy nightspots such as Studio 54 and 21 Club.
The Rolling Stones song "Miss You" was written by Jagger for Hall[6] (many years later, Hall was also the subject of the Bryan Ferry song "Kiss and Tell" following the publishing of her 1985 autobiographical exposé Tall Tales that included details of their relationship).
Jagger's wife, Bianca Jagger, began divorce proceedings as a result of her husband's involvement with Hall
With the large fees she commanded daily as a top model, Hall was able to buy herself a 200-acre (0.81 km2) ranch in Lone Oak, Texas. On March 2, 1984 in New York City, she gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth Scarlett, the first of the four children she would have with Jagger.
She continued her high-profile modelling career and later moved into acting and television work.
Celebrity marriageHall started dating Mick Jagger in 1977, after first meeting in 1976.
She married him on November 21, 1990 in an unofficial Balinese ceremony consisting largely of Hindu ritual
This common-law marriage to Jagger ended in 1999.
They have four children together: Elizabeth (born 1984), James (born 1985), Georgia May (born 1992) and Gabriel (born 1997).
The couple lived together at Downe House, Richmond Hill in Greater London, which Jagger bought in the early nineties.
Entertainment career
In 1989, Hall appeared in director Tim Burton's Batman, in a supporting role as Alicia Hunt, a gangster's moll who is disfigured by The Joker (played by Jack Nicholson).
In 1990, she joined many other guests for Roger Waters' massive performance of The Wall in Berlin.
She also starred in commercials for Bovril.
In 1994 she played the role of Miss Scarlett in the British television show Cluedo.
In the early 2000s, she appeared as Mrs. Robinson in a Broadway production of The Graduate, which included a nude scene on stage. In 2001, she appeared as herself in the documentary Being Mick.
In 2002 she appeared in Brighton in the play Picasso’s Women.
In 2005, Hall starred in a new reality series on VH1 called Kept, revolving around her search for a "boytoy".
The 12 American contestants were asked to transform from boys to refined gentlemen through a series of challenges, and mastering skills like arts, sports, cooking, and fitting into high society.
According to an interview with the winner, he never saw Hall again following the show, and there had been no sexual intimacy between Hall and any of the contestants.
Also in 2005, Hall appeared on the West End stage playing Mother Lord in the London revival of Cole Porter's High Society, and also provided the voice for Sister Penelope in the controversial British cartoon Popetown.
In 2007 she guest-starred on the British TV show Hotel Babylon.
She has also appeared on the popular BBC comedy series French and Saunders.
Currently Hall is the face of Invisible Zinc Skincare and has just published her autobiography Jerry Hall: My Life in Pictures.
In 2004, Hall studied Kabbalah, and was briefly associated with the Kabbalah Centre.
She hosted a charity event for the centre with Mick Jagger and guests Ron Wood and Michael Berg.
However, Hall has since disassociated herself from the centre, claiming that at periodic intervals, they requested significant donations from her.[11]
She lives in Downe House, Richmond, Surrey, with her four children and is helping to launch the LK Today modelling competition.
Hall's current partner is Warwick Hemsley, the Australian millionaire from Perth.[12]
She and Hemsley met whilst Hall was reprising her role in The Graduate in Perth, Western Australia.

Carrie and David Grant are probably the best known pop vocal coaches in the UK. With a client list that includes Take That, Melanie C., Lemar, Will Young and numerous others their credentials are second to none.
It was their involvement with Fame Academy which brought them to the attention of the nation.
Subsequently they were seen as vocal coaches on the three series of “Comic Relief Does Fame Academy”, where they helped develop the vocal abilities of the celebrities as well as championing their cause with the judges.
They were the vocal coaches and judges on “Fame Academy 2” having also appeared as vocal coaches in “Pop Idol”, with Carrie having been featured in the original “Fame Academy”.
However both of their careers cover a far wider area.
Through the early 1980's David Grant had a very successful career as the vocalist for the Brit-Funk duo Linx.
The partnership with bassist Sketch provided four Top Twenty singles between 1980 and 1983 with "Intuition", "Throw away the key", "So this is Romance" and the classic "You’re Lying" as well as a silver album with "Intuition".
When the band split in 1983 David went on to have a very successful solo career with three Top 30 hits, "Stop and go", "Watching you watching me" and "Love will find a way" followed by the Top 5 duet with Jaki Graham "Could it be I’m falling in love”.
In all David has had some 14 hit singles in the UK charts. Throughout this period David also found time to be presenting various tv shows, including “Riverside”, “CDQ” as well as being virtually a resident on Mike Read’s “Pop Quiz” and presenting various soul shows, including the Robbie Vincent Show on BBC Radio London.
He was also nominated for Best newcomer in the Brit Awards as lead singer of Linx .He is now also a top-session singer, and vocal arranger and vocal producer, appearing on various tv shows including Jools Holland’s “Later”.
Carrie has had various roles in the entertainment industry.
Starting as a dancer on TV and moving into presenting for Children’s television, for network programmes such as “How dare you” (Tyne Tees),”Freeze Frame” and the BBC’s award winning series “Heart and Soul” (BBC1), which entailed in-depth interviews.
Carrie then moved into session singing where she became one of the country’s top session singers.
Working with the likes of Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Rod Stewart, Lighthouse Family, Fat Boy Slim and many others.
David and Carrie then worked together on their highly acclaimed gospel album "Watching and waiting" which went on to win them a prestigious MOBO Award as best gospel album for 1998.
Carrie followed this with vocal coaching and producing, working with some of the UK’s top pop acts including Take That, S Club, and more recently Will Young, Melanie C, Lemar, Charlotte Church and many others.
Throughout the US, Europe and the UK Carrie has been called on to coach artistes in the recording studio, TV and live concerts.
As well as being seen as the foremost vocal coaches in the UK Carrie and David also teach on Senior Business Management training courses.
Interactively using the medium of music, they have trained, amongst many others, clients such as The Foreign Office, Barings Bank, Body Shop, Orange, Skandia and Express Newspapers.
Their programmes cover strategy and leadership, change management and team building. David takes a keen interest in politics and current affairs and is frequently appearing on “Daily Politics” and “BBC Breakfast News” as well as Anita Anand’s radio 5 Live Show.
Together they are also involved in monitoring work.
They are both very supportive of young people in the Arts and have presented awards at The Teaching Awards and various Education and Learning Awards, as well as David becoming Ambassador for UK Skills, and 2008 sees them taking on expanding roles in these areas.
Carrie and David are passionate about singing and have released their award winning vocal coaching DVD/Video, “You Can Sing”, and recently their book “Total Singing Tutor”, which are invaluable aids to both beginners and professionals who wish to get the best from their singing voices.
Their commitment to singing is huge and they are often involved with events where they coach an audience to sing.
Last summer they were involved in the “Sing London” event, which involved united the city in singing, in all sorts of public places, cafes, shops, piazzas, museums, galleries and even on buses, culminating on July 8th on the South bank getting a mass choir of people to sing!
David & Carrie have featured in their own BBC TV programme “Facing The Music”, in which they taught people to sing for special events in their lives, and which was nominated for a RTA award.
Other tv appearances include them both on “The Wright Stuff”, “Buzzcocks” with David appearing on “Celebrity Mastermind”, “Test The Nation” “Starspell” “Stars in Fast Cars” and the award winning “Flashmob The Opera”, whilst Carrie has appeared on “Loose Women”, “This Morning” “Trisha Goddard” and they both featured as vocal judges in the BBC’s “Can’t Sing Singers”.
Last year they also featured as vocalists in their own right in the BBC 1 Saturday evening show “The Sound Of Musicals”.
Among many other varied tv appearances David has appeared on “Masterchef” and “The Match” and BBC 2’s “Something for the weekend” whilst Carrie recently appeared in Channel 5’s “Birth Night Live”, Disney’s “Hannah Montana” and a guest appearance in BBC 2’s “Smile”... With them both having frequently presented “The Heaven and Earth” show, they also presented the BBC 1 Sunday morning show “What the World needs Now” throughout December 2006. Early 2007 saw Carrie featured in, and win, the BBC 2 programme “Safari School” .
This was followed by their appearance as vocal coaches in “Comic Relief does Fame Academy 3”, however increasingly they will be taking on broader roles, as presenters, mentors, and supporters of learning skills for people of all ages, and throughout getting people to engage in, and enjoy, and get the most from singing and music.
At the end of 2007 Carrie and David received the prestigious Gold Badge Award presented by The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters in recognition of their outstanding contribution to British music.
Early 2008 sees them featured as vocal coaches and mentors for the prime time BBC 1 Saturday evening show The One and Only, with some of the country’s best tribute artists.
February 2008 will see them presenting an incredible new 30 episode series for CBeebies, “Carrie and David’s Popshop!” which will be a fantastic introduction for young children into pop music .
This is a unique and groundbreaking programme which Carrie and David are totally passionate about, and is a further extension of their commitment to singing and music.

Having breakfast with the great Irish comic - it was a cracker!
His double was the late Royal Butler Peter Moore, another of Chelmsford's great characters.
Frank Carson (born 6 November 1926)[1] is a Northern Irish comedian and actor, best known on television in series such as The Comedians and Tiswas.
Early lifeCarson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he attended St Patrick's Primary School and worked as a plasterer in the building trade and electrician.
Frank's family were of Italian descent, with his grandmother hailing from Sicily.
He grew up in the 'Little Italy' area of Belfast, an area which no longer exists.[2]
Carson spent three years with the Parachute Regiment in the Middle East in the 1950s.[3]
Television careerCarson became a popular performer on Irish television, before moving to England to work as a stand-up club comedian.
He had success on the long running television music-hall revival show, The Good Old Days.
He then went on to win the peak-viewing national favourite talent show Opportunity Knocks, presented by the veteran actor Hughie Green, three times.
He was one of the most noticeable of the acts when he appeared on The Comedians alongside the likes of Charlie Williams, Bernard Manning, Mike Reid and Jim Bowen.
The show consisted of 30 minutes of non-stop stand-up comedy from several comedians in each show.
It became a hit in the United Kingdom and helped establish Carson's career.
The Comedians led to similar shows, Who Do You Do? and The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, which was an attempt to bring the northern English working man's club show to television.
Carson was a regular on television for a number of years after The Comedians, whilst also working as a stage entertainer and appearing before the Royal Family in shows.
He is known for two catchphrases in live performances: "It's a cracker!" and "It's the way I tell 'em!".
He also often tells Irish jokes, mocking the Irish people.
In 1975, Carson took the part of Paddy O'Brien, described as "an Irish Republican landlord and coalman", in The Melting Pot.
This was a sitcom written by Spike Milligan and Neil Shand, which was cancelled by the BBC after just one episode had been broadcast.[4]
When he had heart surgery in 1976 it was suggested[who?] that this would mean he would retire.
However, he continued working and became a regular on the ATV children's series Tiswas.
He also began making acting appearances on television as well as in two cinema films in the 1990s.
In 2002 he directed a film.[citation needed]
In the spring of 1998, he was the opening act for Mary Black's musical concert at the English Village in Dubai, U.A.E.[citation needed]
In 2004, a planned appearance on the reality show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! was shelved by ITV executives due to prohibitive insurance costs given Carson's age.[citation needed]
Current activitiesCarson is still working, making live appearances, in cabaret, pantomime and the summer season throughout the UK.
He spends much of his time helping the needy which has included raising £130,000 for the Royal Victoria Hospital Children's Cancer Ward in 1986.[citation needed]
In 1987 his dedication to charity was recognised by the Roman Catholic Church when he was awarded a Papal knighthood of the Order of St. Gregory by Pope John Paul II.[5]
He is a member of the entertainment charity the Grand Order of Water Rats.[citation needed]
On 2 September 2009 at the age of 82, Carson returned to the stage appearing at the North Pier Theatre midweek season run of The Comedians in Blackpool, where he now lives.[6]
On 30 October Carson appeared at the Velvet Hall in Paphos, Cyprus.[7]
Personal life
Carson lives in the Layton area of Blackpool, Lancashire,[8] where he attends Blackpool F.C. matches at Bloomfield Road.[9]
He is a director of football club Chasetown F.C.[10]
He is also supporter of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).
In 2009 Carson took part in the TV show Cash in the Celebrity Attic to raise money for a local hospice, raising over £900 in the process.
After a routine hernia operation left Carson, who has a heart pacemaker, seriously ill, he underwent a knee replacement operation in July 2009.[6]
Subsequent x-rays, 14 days after being discharged from hospital, showed that he had a previously undetected cracked rib, which may have been the cause of the hernia.
His nephew Trevor Carson is a football goalkeeper with Premier League side Sunderland. His nephew Sean Carson is a comedy writer.

Andreas Nikolaus "Niki" Lauda (born February 22, 1949 in Vienna) is an Austrian former Formula One racing driver and three-time F1 World Champion. More recently an aviation entrepreneur, he has founded and run two airlines and was manager of the Jaguar Formula One racing team for two years.
Early years in racingBorn in Vienna, Austria, to a wealthy family. Although it is often reported in Spain that his paternal grandfather was Juan Lauda Crespo, from Galicia,[1][2][3][4] according to Austrian sources his paternal grandfather was the Viennese-born businessman Hans Lauda.[5][6]
Lauda became a racing driver despite his family's disapproval. After starting out with a Mini, Lauda moved on into Formula Vee, as was normal in Central Europe, but rapidly moved up to drive in private Porsche and Chevron sports cars. His career seemed to be going nowhere in particular until he took out a large bank loan, secured by a life insurance policy, to buy his way into the fledgling March team as a Formula 2 (F2) driver in 1971. He was quickly promoted to the F1 team and drove for March in both F1 and F2 in 1972. Although the F2 cars were good (and Lauda's test-driving skills impressed March principal Robin Herd), March's 1972 F1 season was catastrophic and Lauda, in despair and deep debt, briefly contemplated suicide but finally took out yet another bank loan to buy his way into the BRM team in 1973. Lauda was instantly quick but the team was in decline; his big break came when his BRM team-mate Clay Regazzoni rejoined Ferrari in 1974 and team owner Enzo Ferrari asked him what he thought of Lauda. Regazzoni spoke favourably of Lauda, so Ferrari promptly went and signed him, paying Niki enough to clear his debts.
[edit] Ferrari 1974-1977After an unsuccessful start to the 1970s culminating in a disastrous start to the 1973 season, Ferrari regrouped completely under Luca di Montezemolo and were resurgent in 1974. The team's faith in the little-known Lauda was quickly rewarded by a second-place finish in his début race for the team, the season-opening Argentine Grand Prix. His first Grand Prix (GP) victory – and the first for Ferrari since 1972 – followed only three races later in Spain. Although Lauda became the season's pacesetter, achieving six consecutive pole positions, a mixture of inexperience and mechanical unreliability meant Lauda won only one more race that year, the Dutch GP. He finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship and demonstrated immense commitment to testing and improving the car.
The 1975 F1 season started slowly for Lauda, but after nothing better than a fifth-place finish in the first four races he then won four out of the next five races in the new Ferrari 312T. His first World Championship was confirmed with a fifth win at the last race of the year, the United States GP. He also became the first and only driver to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 7 minutes, which was considered a huge feat as the Nordschleife section of the Nürburgring was 2 miles longer than it is today.
Unlike 1975, Lauda dominated the start of the 1976 F1 season, winning four of the first six races and finishing second in the other two. By the time of his fifth win of the year at the British GP, he had more than double the points of his closest challengers Jody Scheckter and James Hunt, and a second consecutive World Championship appeared a formality. It would be a feat not achieved since Jack Brabham's victories in 1959 and 1960. He also looked set to win the most races in a season, a record held by the late Jim Clark since 1963.
A week before the 1976 German Grand Prix at the fearsome Nürburgring, (even though he was the fastest driver on the circuit at that time) Lauda tried to boycott the circuit, largely due to the safety arrangements. Most of the other drivers voted against it and the race went ahead. On the second lap at the very fast left kink before Bergwerk, Lauda's Ferrari swerved off the track, due to a suspected rear suspension failure, hit an embankment and rolled back into the path of Brett Lunger's Surtees-Ford car. Lauda's Ferrari burst into flames, but, unlike Lunger, he was trapped in the wreckage. Drivers Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger, Guy Edwards and Harald Ertl arrived at the scene a few moments later, but before they and Lunger were able to pull Lauda from his car, he suffered severe burns to his head and inhaled hot toxic gases that damaged his lungs and blood. Although Lauda was conscious and able to stand immediately after the accident, he later lapsed into a coma.[7]
Lauda suffered extensive scarring from the burns, which became possibly his most famous attribute in the eyes of the public. He only had enough reconstructive surgery to get his eyelids to work properly, but never felt a need to do any more. His right ear is mostly gone. Since the accident he has always worn a cap to cover the scars on his head. He has arranged for sponsors to use the cap for advertising.
With Lauda out of the contest, Ferrari boycotted the Austrian GP in protest at what they saw a preferential treatment shown towards McLaren driver James Hunt at the Spanish and British GPs. Carlos Reutemann was even taken on as a potential replacement.
Lauda returned to race only six weeks (two races) later, finishing fourth in the Italian GP. In Lauda's absence, Hunt had reduced his lead in the World Championship standings. Following wins in the Canadian and United States GPs, Hunt stood only three points behind Lauda before the final race of the season, the Japanese GP.
Lauda qualified third, one place behind Hunt, but on race day there was torrential rain and Lauda retired after 2 laps, stating that he felt it was unsafe to continue under these conditions. Hunt led much of the race before a late puncture dropped him down the order. He recovered to 3rd, thus winning the title by a single point. In spite of this, Lauda's move is seen as one of the bravest examples in motor racing.
Lauda's previously good relationship with Ferrari was severely affected by his decision to withdraw from the race, and he endured a difficult 1977 season, despite easily winning the championship through consistency rather than outright pace. Having announced his decision to quit Ferrari at season's end, Lauda left early due to the team's decision to run the then unknown Gilles Villeneuve in a third car at the Canadian Grand Prix.
