Het hoogovencomplex werd in 1902 door de "Rheinische Stahlwerke zu Meiderich bei Ruhrort" gebouwd, en werd later overgenomen door de Thyssen-groep. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog raakte het zwaar beschadigd, maar het werd in de jaren 50 weer opgebouwd. In 1985 waren de hoogovens van het complex te klein geworden om nog rendabel te zijn, en werd het complex gesloten. Tussen 1991 en 2002 werd het terrein als openbaar park ingericht.
Bezienswaardigheden
De meeste gebouwen in het park worden tegenwoordig voor recreatiedoeleinden gebruikt. Zo heeft men vanaf de voormalige hoogoven 5 een goed uitzicht over Duisburg en omstreken, kan men duiken in de gastank, en zijn in een deel van de ertsbunkers enkele klimmuren aangelegd en klimroutes uitgestippeld. Bovendien worden in het park regelmatig evenementen georganiseerd.
Het terrein is opgenomen in de Route der Industriekultur, die langs industriële bezienswaardigheden in het Ruhrgebied gaat.

Die beiden Tage im Februar 2018 an und um die Hochdonnbrücke waren einfach geil. Das Wetter passte und die Züge fuhren wie sie es sollten.
Seither habe ich es als Süddeutscher leider nicht mehr dorthin geschafft. Macht doch auch ein Besuch dort in den Sommermonaten nur bedingt Sinn, dann sind die ICs fast alle relativ "hochlichtig" unterwegs.
Ein Klassiker dort ist der seitliche Blick vom "Nullniveau" des Nord-Ostsee-Kanals hinauf zur Bücke. Am 16. Februar 2018 sind am IC 2072 „Uthlande“ vermutlich mit 218 344 und 470 aktiv.
Und so bleibt der Traum eines Tages - möglicht noch zu 218-Zeiten - es nochmals nach Hochdonn zu schaffen.
Manipuliert wurde hier in mehrfacher Hinsicht. Graphites wurden entfernt und der Gastanker um etwa zwei Minuten beschleunigt.

….. And not any old tank - a GAS tank!! well ‘Gasholder’ to give it the correct name. Great to see these iconic relics have been kept alive by converting them into apartments - see link. Had a busy W/End in London helping our son sort out a few belongings whilst he’s ‘between houses’! Still waiting for completion on the new one so we brought yet another car load back to Shropshire. Little time for photography but thought this redevelopment was interesting at Coal Drops Yard, Kings Cross, well worth a visit. Alan:-)…..

The Old Gasworks in London Fulham bathed in glorious long sunlight after yesterday's gales had passed through and whipped everything up.

Beide Schlepper gehören zur Husumer Schiffswerft und sind auch dort beheimatet. Die SÜDEROOG wurde 1958 gebaut, die KARIN 1977.
Die "Karin" wurde im Dezember 1977 auf der damaligen Husumer Schiffswerft gebaut. Der Schlepper ist 21,5 Meter lang und 6,4 Meter breit und hat einen Tiefgang von 2,4 Meter. Angetrieben wird er durch einen Callesen-Diesel, der 600 Kilowatt leistet.
Hauptaufgabe der "Karin" ist es, die bis zu 130 Meter langen Gastanker oder andere bis zu 8000 Tonnen große Frachtschiffe in die Trockendocks der Werft zu manövrieren. In ihrer 35-jährigen Dienstzeit hat sie schon so einiges mitgemacht, etwa die Überführung im Sturm eines Frachtschiffes mit Maschinenschaden von Rotterdam nach Husum.

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5000 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.
