Chhatti garh ha~ been at the centre of Operation Green Hunt, the name given to the Indian go\ t's war on people, and the adivasis of this tate its targets. Operation Green Hunt is an unprecedented military offensiv~. If the total number of government forces presently engaged in this offensive is taken in it~ entirety (including the paratnilitary forces and the state police), it comes close to a quarter of a million. This i\ more than double the US forces presently deployed in the occupation of Iraq -approximately 120 thousand in SepLember 2009-and bigger than the armies of Australia, Netherlands and South Afnca pul together. The preparations of this war speak volumes about the real intentions of the government: ai r force gunc;hip~ Jgain~t the adivasis and theit traditional weapons, newly constructed airstrips tn Raipur and Jagdalpur, Jungle-\Varfare schools in Kanker and other places of Chhattisgarh to rrain the forces in special operation . ne\\ barracks and bases to station armed forces, public buildings including schools and panchayat hou"~~ now converted to police camps and torture chambers ... To top it all, army commander are over~eeing the war operation~ while the US is provtding 'advisors'. military intelligence. satellite surveillance and ·guidi.lncc·' .
The Indian state's war is bringing in untold sufferings to the adivasis. This i~ in the fonn of de~trucuon or their II\ es and livelihoods. growing dc~titution, massive displacement running into hundred~ of thou\and\ due to increasing atrocities of barbaric dimensions by the paramilitary and security per~onn~l. ttnd death' ..md disappearances of adivasi 'illager~ who have refused to leave the fore!)t area~ which arc their natural h.tbitat Thou')ands of paramilitary. CoBRA and police forces are being deployed under thi operation in ~ach ..md every part of Dandakaranya region, which encompasses parts of Chhattisgarh. Mahara"hlra. OrissJ and AF. These forces are entering forests. hills and village settlements unleashing immense brutality on unarmed nne~ defenceless adivasis. More than 3 lakh adivasis have been forced lo migraLe to the neighbouring A P fearing reprisal from the government's armed forces. .
Adding intrigue to this mL .-derous exercise is the Home Min~ster's sudden and audacious denial of the presence of any such operation termed as the Operation Green Hunt. \Vhat pro\oke~ any discerning mind tnto con')ternation Is the total blackout in the media of continuing atrocities on the adi' a j~., while P C'htdambaram who had eadier graphically explained the various manife~ls of the Operation goe~o, on a dl!nial mode of such a ma\sive military exercise -wilh the paramilitary belongmg to the CRPF. The geographical terrain. where the government's military offensive is planned, i~ very endowed wirh natural resource~ like minerals. forest wealth. biodiversity and water res')urces, and ha~ been the target of ~y~tcmalic u~urpation by sevcrul large, both Indian and foreign, corporation~. So far, the resistance of the local indigenous people against their displacen1ent and dispossession has prevented the government-bnckecl corporates from exploiting the natural resources for their own profits and without regard to sodaJ and ecological concerns. Hundreds of MoUs have been signed by the various state govetnmenl~ and the Iorci1!n and domestic corporations. By September 2009 in the three states of Jharkhand.
