The rose is Rosa 'Compassion'.

I love gardening and get through quite a few pairs of secateurs.

I am trying not to use this pair too much until my current pair finally give up.

I have photographed this door over the years. This door leads from Joe's workshop/garage into a secluded garden.

When you've lived in the same house for over 50 years, as we have, things do tend to show a bit of wear...

While there was little activity in our local gardens, one person however must have decided the be ready for planting soon, with his bucket and gardening equipment.

Larch bench.

In front of the house with fancy windows, in a shady garden, there was an old bench.

It was not just a shop, it was evidence and a repository of a long chain of memories..

The bench owes its existence to the skillful hands of my father, who fifty years ago carved it from resinous larch wood. A feature of larch is that it does not rot and is not afraid of moisture. She got into the garden along with boards from a German engine for a fishing boat.

Father for a long time, like a sculptor or a diamond cutter, cut off everything superfluous with an ax and a planer. With each blow of the ax, he poured energy into his creation, knowing that it would become a meeting place for countless hearts.

Time passed "non-stop forward" and the bench became a silent witness to the stories of many people, relatives and strangers, adults and children, good and "very good". Each person left on this bench a particle of his essence as an imprint in an album without photographs. But the local photographer still has some pictures of this place.

Change is inevitable. Our garden with Antonov apples and the smell of lilies of the valley has grown old, along with the bench. New winds brought sharp turns, but despite the drama of events, the bench was saved.

Now the bench is in a beautiful new garden, under the gaze of another sky. She meets and sees off new people and weaves their fates into her story.

An old larch bench stands like a magic throne, sitting on which I physically feel the speed of the flow of time, as if in a virtual reality helmet.

Can't wait until it's time to dig in the dirt again and plant more fruits and vegetables!

I've had a flare up of plantar fasciitis in my left foot that has hindered my mobility. It's worked out OK though as it has forced me to look at things nearby a little more closely.

During this period of immobility, I've also been studying Josef Sudek's work. His studio and still life images have been really inspiring. That he could do so much while right at home has been eye opening.

My daughter's nursery school is about 300m from our home. There is a vacant house on the way home that I often pass. It's a fascinating place that I often stop by before continuing on my way to work. It's been in my stream before and likely will again.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

I love the swirly, abstract pattern in the out of focus dewdrop. These dewdrops are about the size of a paper match's head or smaller!

Green strawberries developing on lush plants in a garden setting during the spring season

2014

I spent the day Sunday potting and repotting plants and vegetables. Then at night I lit some candles, listened to the gentle sound of water burbling in my small fountain, had several beers and Amarettos, and enjoyed looking at my new tomato plants and my seranno pepper plant by candlelight.

Two things made me want to capture this tableau: One, it's pretty; I love the way the candlelight softly illuminates that one tomato plant and throws its shadow against the wall. Two, this tableau gets me to thinking about the incredibly magical details of our lives.

At one point in time none of these things--the table; the candleholders; the candles; the pots for the plants; the house; me--existed. Now, here they are.

That tomato plant whose shadow is cast against the wall...at one time the seed for that plant did not even exist. It came into being and grew this plant and this plant will produce, from flowers that do not yet exist, delicious tomatoes which I will eat and absorb into my body.

All of those elements came together, elements that were not in existence previously, and they traveled through time and space to come together to produce this unique tableau on this night, a tableau which will never exist in exactly this same form again and at some point in time will cease to exist altogether.

The plant will have served its purpose and it will die and be gone. The candles will have burned up. And at some point, I will be gone too.

As I pondered all of this last night it seemed only fitting that I should make my best possible effort to pay homage to this incredible revelation so that it could be honored, homaged, and thought upon again and again, for I have truly witnessed the sacred in this night.
