Another in the charmingly illustrated "Cuthbert's Seeds guides" with their eye-catching and colourful covers. They date from c1953 - 55. Cuthbert's were a long established seed merchants with roots back to 1797 when the Scot James Cuthbert founded the company. The real turning point appears to have been the 1937 deal to supply seeds to Woolworth's stores and for many years the two brands were closely associated. Cuthbert's embraced marketing by issuing profuse adverts and 'how to booklets' such as these.
As I’ve been sorting through my seed stash, I’ve been pulling out seeds I know are no longer viable. While some seeds may last for a long time (like tomatoes), others start to lose their oomph very quickly. I have found that with onions it’s best to purchase new seeds every other year. In general, fresh seed will have better germination rates than older seed. Tomato seeds seem to be the exception, I have great germination with old tomato seed. Beets do better if they’re only one or two years old. Onions need to be fresh. Here’s a handy guide to download or pin.
With the leaves of the tree still just buds the first few lime-yellow bracts are opening on this Pacific Dogwood.
They open yellow or green and turn white as they mature.
To me they mean late spring on the BC coast. I won't be there when they are in full bloom so I feel lucky I got to see them starting.
