The Beatles (Naturally) Glass Onion

ps...more shots to follow..

I visited a garden fair a couple of weeks ago. There I found this tree where they had hung small glass vases with pink carnations in it.

Have a Happy Pink Tuesday =)

For Pretty Pink Themed Tuesday - A hint of pink.

This was wierdest coincidence this morning... By Latvian calender, everyone has its name day that is celebrated almost like a birthday. Today was name day of Gunta, it is, my name day too. I was planning to go to an annual garden and flower fair today, and just before looking into internet I said to my family: since this is my name day, the photochallenge group should offer me today some nice and easy topic, let' s say, flowers... Can you imagine how shocked I was when I opened website and saw the actual topic??? :-) Yes, and if I had not been planning to go to the exhibition, it would have been crazy task! There was worst weather possible outside, instead of promised spring today it was snowstorm out there like in Arctic!

This was part of exhibition, professional florists and guests on stage were demonstrating how to work with flowers. This shot came out so vivid that I decided to post this one for photochallenge group... and few of other flower captures just in my photostream.

Duerrenmungenau Castle in the village of Duerrenmungenau near Abenberg, Franconia (Bavaria)

Some background information:

The village of Duerrenmungenau was first mentioned in 1278. In this document also a castle was referred to, which was built to protect the trade route between the important cities of Nuernberg and Augsburg. In the following years the castle was enlarged and surrounded by a moat, which still exists.

In the Thirty Years’ War both village and castle were completely destroyed by marauding troups of lansquenets. In 1651 the vandalized castle, which formerly used to belong to the noble families von Westernach and von Crailsheim, was bought by the noble patrician family Kress von Kressenstein from Nuremberg. This family colonized the village again and from 1720 to 1725 also rebuilt the castle by converting it to Baroque style.

After reconstruction was finished the family Kress von Kressenstein used Duerrenmungenau castle as their summer residence. In the 18th century Duerrenmungenau Castle obtained its heyday, among others by the family’s connections to the literary society Pegnesischer Blumenorden (literally translated: Flower Order of Pegnitz river).

In 1896 the castle entered into possession of baron Leuckart von Weissdorf and his descendants, who still own and inhabit the castle nowadays. Unfortunately the castle can only be visited once a year at the occasion of a garden fair, which takes place there.

About the grounds:

The castle’s courtyard can be entered by a wrought-iron gate, which is surrounded by two onion-domed towers. The stately home with its main building, outbuilding, park and orchard is bordered by a square sandstone wall with another onion-domed tower in every corner. The outbuilding consists of many sandstone buildings, amongst them a hop barn from 1736 and a washhouse. Right in the middle of the courtyard there’s a circular flowerbed. Next to it a cluster of lime and chestnut trees is situated, as well as a fountain. The entire grounds do have landmark status.

The rear of Dennenlohe Castle, viewed from the château park during the annual garden fair, Franconia (Bavaria)

Some background information:

Dennenlohe Castle has an almost 900-year-long tradition. It was first mentioned in a document in 1167 and its owner at that time was baron Hartwicus von Lierheim, who also used to be the bishop of Augsburg. Over the centuries the castle changed hands several times. Amongst its possessors was the noble family von Leonrod, who acquired it in 1430 and owned it for more than 150 years. By marriage in 1589 it passed into possession of the comital family Schenk von Castell. But this family never lived there and therefore the whole estate was administered by stewards for more than 120 years.

In 1711 Dennenlohe Castle was sold to baron Paul Martin Eichler von Auritz, who had the castle built in its present baroque uniform appearance. The alteration was executed in 1734 according to plans from the famous Italian architect Leopoldo Retti. In 1825 baron Johann Gottlieb von Suesskind , who was a banker, bought the grounds. Nowadays the eighth generation of the family von Suesskind lives there.

The current owner baron Robert von Suesskind’s main profession is gardener. He’s always busy with the design and planting of the castle garden, which was elected one of the 20 most beautiful parks in Germany.

The park has an overall size of more than 130.000 square meters including Southern Germany’s largest rhododendron park. Of course the château park is open to the public, but the interior of the stately home is private.

Once a year baron Robert von Suesskind arranges a huge garden fair in the château park, which takes four days and is upgraded by a varied and attractive supporting programme including concerts, art exhibitions, stage performances and numerous delicate food stalls.

Ik kéék naar het poffertjes bakken, dat was al een warme bezigheid.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did not bake, I just watched.

"poffertjes" are a kind of little pancakes, eaten with lots of sugar and a big lump of melting butter, very popular with the kids.

..saw this wonderful lady on a garden fair this autumn...
