Dahlias are a captivating and diverse group of flowering plants celebrated for their vibrant and intricate blooms. These flowers belong to the Asteraceae family and are native to Mexico and Central America. Dahlias come in various sizes, shapes, and colors, ranging from small, button-sized pom-poms to large, dinner-plate-sized blossoms. Their petals can be single, semi-double, or fully double, displaying a wide spectrum of colors, including shades of red, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and white.

Dahlias thrive in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight, typically grown from tubers planted in the spring after the threat of frost has passed. Regular deadheading (removing spent blooms) encourages continuous flowering. They are versatile plants used to beautify flower beds, borders, and gardens, while their long stems and showy blooms make them popular choices for cut flower arrangements and bouquets.

In regions with cold winters, dahlias are often treated as tender perennials or annuals. To overwinter them, dig up the tubers in the fall after the first frost, let them dry, and store them in a cool, dark place until spring. Despite their beauty, dahlias can be susceptible to pests like aphids and slugs, as well as diseases like powdery mildew and fungal infections, necessitating proper care and vigilance.

Symbolically, dahlias convey meanings of elegance, dignity, and a commitment to an eternal bond in the language of flowers. They are often used in wedding bouquets and other formal arrangements. In Mexico, dahlias hold cultural and symbolic significance as the national flower, further enhancing their charm and importance.

Another macro for Macro Mondays, theme curves. It's actually an individual agapanthus bud covered in raindrops. Have a great week every one !

For Macro Monday's "New" theme.

The front lawn here has been overrun by these tiny little native violets for near 10 years now. About twice a year I mow them, sadly, which I did recently. Quite fitting that at the start of a new year, a few of the violets having start to grow back - new life. This little fellow was about 5mm across. The meek shall inherit the lawn?

Happy new week out there, hope the post Christmas/New Year hangovers have all dissipated.

I'm working on a project called "Driven to Abstraction" where I create abstracts from natural scenes. I shot this one yesterday while on a walk through the San Diego Botanic Garden. The colors are all there in the agave scene I simply enhanced them to personal taste in post processing.

Bougainvillea with pink blooms is a popular variety of this vibrant and hardy flowering plant. The pink variety typically has striking, bright pink or magenta-colored bracts (the colorful leaves that surround the tiny, less conspicuous flowers). These plants are known for their ability to add a burst of color to gardens, patios, and landscapes, especially in warm, tropical, or subtropical climates.

A radiant red-orange flower bursts into bloom, its elongated petals encircling a golden-yellow center like a sunburst of color. Nestled among lush green foliage and delicate white blossoms with cheerful yellow centers, the composition evokes a sense of warmth, vitality, and natural harmony. The vivid contrast and organic textures make this image a celebration of seasonal beauty and botanical elegance.

My latest photography is now available for purchase at crsimages.pixels.com/, featuring prints, framed art, and more from my curated collections.

Sturt's desert pea (Swainsona formosa), the floral emblem of South Australia. It is a distinctive Australian wildflower known for its blood-red, leaf-like flowers, each with a bulbous black center.

Chrysanthemum x grandiflorum The most useful of all autumn-blooming perennials for borders, containers, and cutting, and the most versatile and varied of all chrysanthemum species, available in many flower forms, colors, plant sizes (from under a foot to 6 ft. tall), flower sizes, and growth habits. Colors include white, yellow, red, pink, orange, bronze, purple, and lavender, as well as multicolors. Garden culture.

Letting the radiant beauty of these orchids brighten my day. Their vibrant pink hues are simply mesmerising.

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find that the first Lotus flower of the season had opened at the San Diego Botanic Garden. They are my favorite flowers to photograph because of the awesome way their petals catch the light.

I like to create abstracts from natural scenes. One of my favorite subjects is the bark of trees, in this case a colorful Eucalyptus growing in the San Diego Botanic Garden. I use my macro lens to make s detailed image of a small section of the trunk that I think will make an interesting composition, then turn and enhance the file in post processing. The end result is an Abstract done in collaboration between me and Mother Nature.

I really enjoy photographing cacti. My goal is to try to capture their fascinating combination of beauty and danger. I took this shot while on a walk through the San Diego Botanic Garden.

What are you passionate about?

Living along the coast of Southern California I am naturally drawn to photographing waves. Unfortunately the ocean has been flat lately, so I had to find these waves while on a walk at the San Diego Botanic Garden.

Here is another shot of a Passion Flower, but this time I used a different POV and limited DOF. I think it's fun to experiment by shooting the same subject in a bunch of different ways.

In a garden where sunlight dances bright,

Stands a hollyhock, in golden light.

With petals soft as morning's gleam,

A yellow hollyhock, nature's dream.

Tall and graceful, reaching high,

Kissing the blue of summer sky.

Whispers of the breeze it hears,

Through seasons' laugh and sometimes tears.

Golden petals, layered and fair,

A sunlit crown, beyond compare.

Among the green, it proudly stands,

A beacon bright in fertile lands.

Pollinators come, bees and butterflies,

Drawn to its charm, under azure skies.

Each bloom a testament, bold and true,

Of nature’s palette, yellow and blue.

In quiet moments, when day is done,

It basks in the glow of the setting sun.

A yellow hollyhock, so pure, so bright,

A symbol of joy, in the soft twilight.

The wild snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) belongs to the lily family. These flowers feature a distinctive checkered pattern in deep red and purple and hang like small bells from their stems. Occasionally, a white variant, known as the Zwolse tulip, appears among the purple flowers.

Did you know that Mother Nature is an awesome abstract artist?. Well she is and you can see her work if you know where to look. I find it in the bark of Eucalyptus trees growing in the San Diego Botanic Garden. As the bark peels it reveals amazing shapes and colors that can be enhanced in post processing to create abstracts like this one. It is truly one of a kind as soon the bark will peel completely and the scene will be gone forever.

Like moonlight resting on the earth,

The white dahlia softly blooms,

A quiet glow of gentle worth,

A star within the garden’s rooms.

Its petals fold like whispered peace,

Unfurling calm in morning air,

A symbol of the soul’s release,

Of purity beyond compare.

No need for colors loud or bright—

It speaks in silence, soft and true,

A tender breath of sacred light,

Where hope is born in shimmering dew.

O graceful bloom of ivory hue,

You teach the world serenity,

In every drop of pearled white dew,

You blossom with divinity.

Fun fact #629 - In Australia the Lantana is classed as a noxious weed, since 1920 no less, and its spread has been officially classified as a KTP. I'm sure you knew already that stands for Key Threatening Process. I could probably be arrested for taking this photo! I would like to give them my own classification , KPS - key photographic subject :)

Cheers all, have a great week!

a single rose hangs gracefully against a stark wall contrasting with shadows of a lamp and other flowers. the contrast between the delicate pink petals and the solid silhouette plays with perception, blending the natural with the symbolic in a dance of light and shadow.
