The Secret Garden

There is a hidden secret garden in the neighbouring village - a wild and wonderful woodland, filled with native and exotic trees, fungi, flowers, painted dragonflies, meandering paths, and a babbling, sinuous stream running through it.

I am tempted to say "Isn't mother Nature marvellous?" but the truth is, this is the handiwork and vision of one man - Boyd Mackenzie. This is a lifetime's vocation made manifest in a woodland walk that looks as if it grew naturally in any forest, not - as it was when I came to Gress 35 years ago - a flat, grassy, open croft.

It proves that of you have the foresight, the patience, the skill, and the imagination, you can do anything.

Lupinus, commonly known as lupin or lupine, is a member of the pea family (Fabaceae). Lupine flowers are similar to those of pea blossoms but are packed tightly together on conical spikes that stand tall and erect above palmate foliage. The blossoms open from the bottom up and often display more than one color on the same plant, in hues ranging from soft pastels to deep reds and violet blues. After the flowers fade, they are replaced by flat pea-shaped seedpods.

Stacking stones can be an art, a hobby or even a way of communicating, using them as trail markers in the forest. Although that wouldn't be recommended as they could be knocked over. Some say there is Zen to stacking stones, or rock balancing:

www.gardendesign.com/art/rock-cairn-sculptures.html

Balanced rock stacks are sometimes called cairns, however cairns are more like a man made pile of rocks used as land markers or as monuments as opposed to balancing one rock upon another. See more:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairn

This stone stack is one of many I have come across along trails in a forest I often walk in, most of them are on tree stumps. I've balanced rocks and it requires patience. For some people they say it's like meditation.

Moongate in Water Pavilion in Autumn.

This is an archive shot, taken years ago when there were no tall buildings to clutter the scene, or disturb the serenity.

Nestled in the heart of Tokyo, the Imperial Palace East Gardens offer a serene escape from the bustling city life. These gardens, part of the larger Imperial Palace grounds, are steeped in history and tradition, making them a must-visit for anyone interested in Japan's rich cultural heritage. The East Gardens were once the site of Edo Castle, the residence of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from the early 17th century until the mid-19th century. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this historical era, including the foundation of the former castle tower, which was destroyed by fire in the 17th century and never rebuilt. The meticulously landscaped gardens feature a variety of seasonal flowers, ancient trees, and traditional Japanese elements such as stone lanterns and koi ponds. One of the highlights is the Ninomaru Garden, a classic example of a Japanese landscape garden, complete with a central pond, walking paths, and carefully placed rocks and plants. The garden's design reflects the aesthetic principles of harmony, balance, and tranquility, providing a peaceful retreat for contemplation and relaxation.

The East Gardens are open to the public year-round, offering a changing tapestry of colors and textures with each season. Spring brings cherry blossoms, summer lush greenery, autumn vibrant foliage, and winter a stark, serene beauty. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a quiet place to unwind, the Imperial Palace East Gardens are a hidden gem in the heart of Tokyo, offering a glimpse into Japan's past and a sanctuary of natural beauty.

the purpose of creating this wave was to make a very straight path more interesting.... also to reduce the size of the flower bed...

The snow and rain on granite rock erodes the thin soil from top to bottom... the path does not remain flat... walking along it is like being on a yacht... the wave idea made me laugh...

Perhaps you can see the three pumpkins... and further along the rose bed...

Colorful Lantana blooming at BBG.

Nothing beats Lantana for nonstop color throughout the growing season. The cheerful flower clusters - in a rainbow of single and multi-hues, bloom nonstop from late spring through frost, and nearly year-round in warmer climates. Known for its carefree nature, lantana is grown as an annual in northern regions, and a broadleaf evergreen shrub or ground cover in frost-free climates. The flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and insect pollinators.

Little miniature canal locks, the People’s Choice winner for Best Show Garden also gave Mark Gregory's fantasy garden a Gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019.

In July 2021, we visited the site of Woodstock in Bethel, NY to attend two concerts and stayed in a rented room nearby. Jeanne, the landlady, had a fantastic garden and we were so enamored by the huge Oxalis she had in a garden pot. Before we moved on, Jeanne had taken a wee part of her plant and repotted it in a small pink plastic garden pot. She warned us that when we bring it in for the fall and winter, the oxalis would look like it was dying. It did! Now, out in the summer heat and sun again, the oxalis has continued to grow and bloom. Not the best photo, but I love the color here, between the Oxalis leaf color, the tiny Oxalis flowers and the pink pot.

On the island at Stourhead, a single golden tree glows against the calm water, its reflection soft in the stillness of an autumn morning. The light shifts gently through the mist, catching the last warmth of the season. In this quiet moment, the landscape becomes almost painterly, a perfect expression of the harmony between nature and design at Stourhead.

The Garden of the Palace of the Marquises of Fronteira, in Benfica, Lisbon, is one of the most notable examples of 17th-century Baroque landscape architecture. The formal garden is enclosed by an imposing wall-gallery covered with tiles, organized into two distinct iconographic registers. On the lower level, the tile panels feature equestrian figures associated with the military lineage of the Mascarenhas family. On the upper level, the famous “Gallery of Kings,” accessible by side staircases and topped by pyramidal domed turrets, displays busts of Portuguese monarchs against a blue background. The deliberate absence of the kings of the Philippine Dynasty is a clear political statement of the Marquis of Fronteira's loyalty to the Restoration of Independence in 1640. The gallery wall structures the garden space through a central axis and trimmed hedges, integrating coats of arms and ornaments that reinforce the family's genealogical representation. The ensemble, with its symmetry and representative function, affirms the noble identity and dynastic legitimacy of Portugal in the post-Restoration period.

In a garden where sunlight dances bright,

Stands a hollyhock, in golden light.

With petals soft as morning's gleam,

A yellow hollyhock, nature's dream.

Tall and graceful, reaching high,

Kissing the blue of summer sky.

Whispers of the breeze it hears,

Through seasons' laugh and sometimes tears.

Golden petals, layered and fair,

A sunlit crown, beyond compare.

Among the green, it proudly stands,

A beacon bright in fertile lands.

Pollinators come, bees and butterflies,

Drawn to its charm, under azure skies.

Each bloom a testament, bold and true,

Of nature’s palette, yellow and blue.

In quiet moments, when day is done,

It basks in the glow of the setting sun.

A yellow hollyhock, so pure, so bright,

A symbol of joy, in the soft twilight.
