The Purple Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), colloquially known simply as "the mangosteen", is a tropical evergreen tree, believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia. The tree grows from 7 to 25 m (20–80 ft) tall. The rind (exocarp) of the edible fruit is deep reddish purple when ripe. Botanically an aril, the fragrant edible flesh can be described as sweet and tangy, citrusy with peach flavor and texture.

The longan's (Euphoria longan) origin is disputed. It may be native to the west of Burma or alongside the lychee in China. It is in these regions that it is planted on a large scale. Longan is a prolific bearer and thrives in monsoonal regions with pronounced rainy and dry seasons. Longan is by a wide margin Thailand's greatest fruit export, beating pineapple, durian, and pummelo in money value. A very close relative of the longan, the mata kuching (E. malaiensis), also known as cat's eyes, is cultivated in many areas of South East Asia.

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is an exotic, tropical fruit with a slightly sweet and sour flavor.

It’s originally from Southeast Asia but can be found in various tropical regions around the world.

The fruit is sometimes referred to as purple mangosteen because of the deep purple color its rind develops when ripe. In contrast, the juicy inner flesh is bright white.

The Mangosteen, also known as “the Queen of Fruits”, has the exotic round dark-purple to red-purple exterior. From inside it consist of the orange like, segmented snow white juicy flesh which has delectably sweet / tangy flavor. It is said to have numerous health benefits Interestingly the mangosteen tree is very slow growing and does not produce fruit for the first seven years of growth and because of this it is one of the expensive fruits. Mangosteen is the national fruit of Thailand & can be found in the market during summer. Yay :) It's amazing and I like it…

One of the most tastiest tropical fruits on earth! my favourite tropical fruit which is the Mangosteen! oh btw, it's unripe yet :)

Cultivated in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. This delicious fruit has a thick, dark-red skin, inside which are creamy white segments with a sweet, slightly tart flavor. Purported by many who have had the luxury of tasting it as being the best tasting fruit in the world. While possibly a bit extreme, the mangosteen is instantly liked by many who eat it. - part copied from Toptropicals.com

In the homeland of Mangosteen, south-east Asia, it was always, it is now and it will ever be the undisputed QUEEN of fruits.

So, who is the KING ? In south-east Asia, Durian has the honor of being the KING of fruits.

Both honors however, are passionately and vehemently disputed by people in the homeland of Mango, i.e., Pakistan, India and Bangladesh where Mangosteens and Durians are far from becoming household words.

Garcinia prainiana, known as the button mangosteen or cherapu is a species of Garcinia. It has a flavor similar to, but distinct from, its cousin, the purple mangosteen, with an interesting taste some have compared to a tangerine, but unlike its cousin, it has a tissue-thin skin rather than a hard rind, making it much easier to eat out-of-hand. Also unlike the purple mangosteen, it can be grown in a container.

The fruit is cultivated in Southeast Asia, by a few backyard growers in South Florida and at the Whitman Rare Fruit Pavilion of Florida's Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

And yes, that is the front wall of the Rare Fruit Pavilion behind me that is being reflected in the large water drop at the center of this ruby red beauty!

A tropical tree, the Mangosteen must be grown in consistently warm conditions, as exposure to temperatures below 0°C (32°F) for prolonged periods will generally kill a mature plant. They are known to recover from brief cold spells rather well, often with damage only to young growth. Experienced horticulturists have grown this species outdoors, and brought them to fruit in extreme South Florida.

Mangosteen or Purple Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) had been acknowledged by almost everyone in the tropical fruit world as the QUEEN of the fruits (I would guess that Mango or Durian is therefore the KING of the fruits ?).

A lesser known Mangosteen with many medicinal values had been thriving in India since ancient times but with a not-so-desirable taste. Because of its taste, it had been variously called Sour Mangosteen and False Mangosteen among few not so endearing names.

Here are few of the Sanskrit names;

One of about 400 varieties of Garcinia, Imbe is the best known relative of the Mangosteen in Africa.

The name commemorates one Laurent Garcin (1683-1751), a French botanist who was active in India, where the genus is particularly diverse.

With sap that makes arrow poison, leaves that contain antibacterial compounds, and fruit as tasty as its cousin Mangosteen, the uses of Imbe are as varied as the places visited by its namesake David Livingstone.

Although the fruit is tasty, the plant is more often used as an ornament in landscaping than a source of food. The tree decorates Mozambique’s capitol and can be seen near Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Hardy, somewhat salt-tolerant, and drought-resistant, the tree occurs naturally in landscapes as varied as the sand dunes of Tana Delta in Kenya, open woodland of South Africa, the Okavango Delta of Botswana, and termite mounds in Zambia. The tree provides forage for wildlife like elephants and canoe-building material, although the latex produced by the tree can make the wood difficult to carve.

The fruit is eaten raw, cooked with porridge, seeded and dried, or crushed like grapes to create a drink. The fruit can also be fermented to make a purplish wine or soaked in alcohol and mixed with syrup to make liqueur.
