Ganesha or Ganesh, also known as Ganapati and Vinayaka, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali (Indonesia) and Bangladesh and in countries with large ethnic Indian populations including Fiji, Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago. Hindu denominations worship him regardless of affiliations.Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists.
Although he is known by many attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify.Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganesha is also invoked as patron of letters and learning during writing sessions. Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits.
Ganesha likely emerged as a deity as early as the 1st century CE,but most certainly by the 4th and 5th centuries CE, during the Gupta period, although he inherited traits from Vedic and pre-Vedic precursors. Hindu mythology identifies him as the restored son of Parvati and Shiva of the Shaivism tradition, but he is a pan-Hindu god found in its various traditions. In the Ganapatya tradition of Hinduism, Ganesha is the supreme deity. The principal texts on Ganesha include the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana, and the Ganapati Atharvashirsa. Brahma Purana and Brahmanda Purana are other two Puranic genre encyclopaedic texts that deal with Ganesha.

21st September 2015 - I came into Liverpool for work half an hour early as is my norm and was greeted with the sounds of chanting and drumming coming from the Pierhead.
I wandered down and was greeted by the sight of hundreds of Hindu's that at gathered at the waterfront in celebration of the festival of 'Ganesh Chaterthi' ,
Here's what www.fullstopindia.com/hinduism-101-ganesha-hindu-elephant... has to say:
Ganesha, the much beloved elephant god of India. He is the son of Shiva, Lord of the Brahmacharis (celibates), remover of obstacles, and the Lord of Success. He is the god of wisdom whose image has become an iconic symbol for Hinduism around the world. He is the god of education with an elephant head, large ears, a curved trunk atop a huge pot-bellied human body. Followers look to him for help with wealth and knowledge. They worship him at the start of a ritual or beginning of a journey. He is the guardian deity of Hinduism.
If any of our Hindu Flickr members would like to add more i'd be delighted to hear your thoughts as Liverpool was one of the mass immigration centres of the globe once upon a time and i'd love to hear any Hindu's tales of how they became 'Scouse'
I have also got to add that once everyone had left there was no litter anywhere and boy was there some food on the go!!!!
Respect to the organisers of the event for showing enough respect for the area to tidy up after themselves.. something that is sadly lacking when music events are held in this area...
Happy Ganesh Chaturthi Festival to all my friends
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most revered festival which is celebrated across the country. Ganesh Chaturthi festival is dedicated to worship Lord Ganesh and on the particular Chaturthi Tithi. This festival marks the birth anniversary of Lord Ganpati.
