The next step was to cut out all those hundreds of tiny shapes. I made a point of only doing about four or five inches a day on weeknights, and two stretches that size on weekends, to let my hands rest in between. (Otherwise I knew I'd overdo it and wake up the next day with my hands in cramped claws.)
When cutting the plastic laminated foam, it turns out the best way to get a smooth cut is to hold the knife in place, and rotate the foam. But this became awkward when cutting the belt, as it was so long it kept bumping into the shelves behind my work table, or dragging off the edge of the table. So I kept having to stop to reposition everything. Then I came up with this rig that held the other end of the belt up and out of the way, and work progressed much more quickly.
