A fascinating article, one of a series looking at major printing companies, this being the September 1934 description of the works and production of John Waddington Ltd whose head office and main works were in Leeds, West Yorkshire. They also had a subsidiary works in Stoke Newington, London, that dealt with letterpress posters for more 'immediate' and 'local' consumption such as for theatrical, cinema and sporting events in London. They also had sales offices in Charing Cross Road, London.
Waddington's were formed in 1905 in Leeds and became a limited company in 1921 with major works on Wakefield Rd in the city on a site that now houses First Direct's bank offices. These works had an interesting history in that they were constructed as a typewriter manufacturing plant to be produced using war wounded workers. This 'laudable effort' failed and Waddington's bought the works in 1922. Aside from printing - the company increasingly specialised int he production of colour posters using lithographic processes - they'd diversified into games and playing cards, jigsaws, greetings cards and cartons. I suspect most people recall them for their playing cards and games as, in the 1930s, they became the UK's manufacturer of the American game Monopoly, licensing this from Parker Bros who, in turn, took the US rights for the Waddington's game Cluedo.

Sprite work for my game's main character, Astronaut Annie! She shoots! She dodges! She reels!
The game is a simple, short shooter with a boss at the end. When I feel like it's really polished I'll release it... it's not "THE" game, but it's A game! Hoo-rah.

Four years ago my father-in-law was a "Gamemaker" at the 2012 London Olympics. It was a fantastic experience for him and we were very proud of him doing it.
I always regretted not getting a photo of him in all his Gamemaker uniform. Today, four years on and just before the next Olympics I finally got round to asking him to model it for me and got a photo for posterity
The evenings generally went on until after midnight. Jo & Anita are enthusiastic games players so each night we dipped into our collection of weird and wacky games. Pictured here a hand crafted wooden board game called Tac-Tic from a gamemaker in France.
Oh, it only took me an hour to figure out how to take a freakin' screenshot in Windows (I'm using bootcamp for Game Maker), but here's an ****EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK**** at my little shooter in action.
Those are floating Yeti soldiers with the angry ice fish, shootin' ice cubes at Annie. She can grab that pistachio ice cream cone if she wants to increase her health any.
Anyway, still needs a bunch of visual tune-ups before I set it live or whatever. Right now the window is this size. Wanna make it bigger and make all those pixels nice and chubby.
I wore brown pants that I had personally cut off uneven to make it look like I ripped it off, just as she did. I wore a green top with the mockingjay symbol on it. I also wore brown hunting boots along with a black jacket(not present) and a orange backpack(also not present) and covered the three in mud. I had a brown quiver with arrows in it and a real (3 string) hunting bow. I made scratches on my face. Including the ones from the branches when she ran through the forest while on Tracker Jacker venom, and a cut on my lip along with above my right eye from Clove when she pinned Katniss on the ground and threatened to make her death slow and painful. I also added cuts on my chest, legs and arms from running through the forest, and I personally made a burn on my right calf from when she got hit with the gamemakers fireballs. I also attatched extensions and braided them. And to finish it all off I painted red and yellow flames on my nails to represent "the girl on fire". --by Shelby
Yeah, the title is generic, but it's a generic shooting game, so why not? The graphics for the ship were created using LDView screen caps of this MOC.
I only had one test stage, four enemies (using different colors of the same sprites), and one type of weapon, but it was upgradeable (the standard "Vulcan" type, with the spread increasing as you power it up).
I guess it could actually pass as a rudimentary game. It starts, you have three lives, and if you get to the end, it ends. If you die, it ends. Still, I wish I had the patience and skill to make a complete game.
I made this a couple years ago. I thought it was interesting that nnenn has dabbled in the same thing.
I feel slightly elated that I was mentioned/retweeted via work Twitter by the official Plants vs. Zombies twitter account (as well as the gamemaker) considering how much time I spend playing their game.
I still need to get to work on a drawing idea I had, based off some photos, but for now, I've co-opted my alter-ego's cell phone, which happened to have an appropriate tune on it.

So I went to see "The Hunger Games about two weeks ago (yeah took me this long to right this).Any way,the movie was great.Come on what is better than teenagers killing each other?Of course that is not what the hole story is about (if you have read all three books you would understand.The movie takes place in the ruins of what used to be North America.Instead of states,America is divide into twelve districts (1-12 of course) and the Capital ( which is in The Rocky Mountains).Since the districts rebelled against the Capital,Distict 13 was presumably destroyed and every year each district has to offer two tributes (one male and one female)between the ages of 12-18 to fight in the annual Hunger Games.The story starts out with Katniss,a sixteen yearold girl that has a younger sister named Primrose (or Prim) and a mother.It is Prim's first time to be possibly picked for the Hunger Games.When Prim's name is drawn,Katniss volunteers in place of Prim to fight in the games.The male from Distict 12 is Peeta and immediately you get a hint that the two have a past connection.So Katniss and Peeta go off to the Capital along with Effie (the representative of District 12) and Haymitch (the only winner of The hunger Games from District Twelve That is still alive).After interviews and training sessions,all of the tributes are sent to the arena to fight to the death.Notable tributes are : Glimmer,Marvel,Cato,Clove,Foxface,Rue,Thresh,and of course Katniss and Peeta.One thing leads to another and the only tributes left alive are Katniss,Peeta,and Cato.Earlier in the movie head gamemaker Senesca Crane decided to change the rules to make a more interesting show.The new rule states that two tributes can survive as long as they are from the same district.Unfortunately for Cato,Clove was killed earlier in the games.Katniss kills Cato and her and Peeta are the only two tributes left alive.The rules are changed back to the original and Katniss and Peeta threaten to eat poison berries.Crane allows the two to live and is executed for this decision.President Snow ( the dictator of Panem) sees the event as an act of rebellion and you can see that he is not through with his quest to end this possible rebellion.
Over all I give the movie 4.5 stars out of 5.

Tony Forster and Roland Gesthuizen meeting with Mark Weber (aka the Flying Numbat), a leading Science and Technology educator from Western Australia who dropped over for a visit whilst in Melbourne during June 2006. Mark is an innovative teacher and great bloke who has given me considerable inspiration since my early days.
Mark was interested in how we use Moodle and GameMaker. He was particularly impressed with the detailed simulations and applications developed by Tony. He showed us his Numbat website with a movie of his flying falcon rocket, a student project to build a car powered with with parts and motor salvaged from a computer CDROM player!
They are called the Game Makers, and they sure did for me, so many of them with the answers to any direction questions, there was so many of them too all volunteering their time for the two weeks, Faroog was at Victoria station and helped me get my bearings as I came out to the street.
I ‘m asking complete strangers with that photogenic something, “can I take your photograph”? Having completed the 100 Strangers Project, I’m not stopping.
